It’s no secret that I find basic chicken rather boring. Ryan actually laughed at me on Saturday night at Taste of the Nation because if I saw a restaurant serving chicken, I skipped over it in favor of sampling their sides or dessert, telling Ryan, “I don’t eat chicken.”
Of course I do eat chicken and don’t dislike it, but if I’m given the choice between chicken and basically any other form of protein, chicken falls pretty low on the totem poll unless it’s really delicious chicken. (This means that it’s probably BBQ or buffalo chicken, chicken salad or rotisserie/baked chicken that’s extra juicy.) Ryan, on the other hand, loves chicken and can enjoy every last bite of an unseasoned chicken breast.
One thing Ryan and I agree on when it comes to chicken is our shared love of chicken sausage. Chicken apple sausage is one of my absolute favorite ways to eat chicken and it found its way into my lunch this afternoon.
I added the chicken sausage to a bowl of quinoa and sautéed zucchini and yellow squash.
Yum!
Before lunch, our landlord stopped by and walked through our house to check for any issues before Ryan and I signed another year lease. We passed inspection because, in his words, he “didn’t find any dead bodies.” Phew!

What did he think of the dishwasher? Read: Is he going to do something about the dishwasher?
Sara @ Magia e Pasta
he’s sending a maintenence guy out to look at it.
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers
I’m with ya. The chicken I eat needs to be delicious or I’d rather go veggie.
Julie
I love quinua! I´m definetely trying this recipe! How much quinua do you usually use?
Thais @ Eats n Miles
You are so lucky to have good products where you live.
I can’t buy beef, bacon or chicken sausages, I ca’nt buy deli meat …nothing..because where i live there is NOTHING that is hormone free or antibiotic free.
Even the “natural low sodium” deli meat is obviously false advertising since its not natural and since even if it has no nitrates, it has celery seed extract, a form of nitrates.
I miss variety
sandi
Woww, that’s really interesting/crazy! Hehhh if I may ask, is that another state in the US? or another country? I’m always super curious to know what different places of the world offer and have readily available. I know where I live, in Cali, almost everything is available! But in the midwest that’s not always the case.
And I think my fave way of eating chicken is in the spicy Korean way, or just super moist on the grill! Mmmmm
Ellie@Fit for the Soul
Hahahaha love what your landlord said. That is hilarious. Chicken sausage is so yummy! I’m with you on the whole plain chicken thing… it is so boring. I’d rather have some other form of protein too.
Carol @ Lucky Zucca
I’d love a recipe too! Any sauces/spices/etc? Thanks in advance
Dawn
yum! that quinoa bowl looks great… do you have a recipe? did you use any spices or what not?
laura
I’ve never tried chicken sausage, but I’ll pick some up on my next grocery run.
This is totally random, but do you ever lift heavier weights? Just curious if you ever incorporate serious lifting into your routines.
Angela
I feel like I eat chicken so much it is the last thing I want when I go out to eat. We LOVE apple chicken sausage in our house, we buy it every week and it always finds its way into a meal!
Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots
I’ve tried it…can’t say that I like it!
claire
Chicken sausage is the bomb!
Has anyone tried ground chicken? Just curious where it rates on the taste scale.
Beckett @ The Birchwood Pie Project
Ground chicken is one of my favorites- I usually get the regular ground chicken and when it’s on sale, the ground chicken breast. I usually stick with Perdue. In terms of taste, you usually have to add the flavor to it with spices and sauces, but it holds up really well. I love using it for lettuce cups, etc. It’s yummy!
Amy
Oh yes, our house is also a huge fan of the chicken apple sausage. In fact, the other night I made a red pepper/asiago chicken sausage and my husband whined about it because it wasn’t the apple sausage. He was like, “Why do you even buy another kind?” Ha!
Stacy
I started using chicken sausage in several of our weekly meals after seeing it in a lot of your posts. My favorite is Trader Joe’s Spicy Jalapeno Chicken Sausage. We put it in stir fry with veggies, on homemade pizza, and in with pasta! I’m actually putting it in pasta tonight for an easy dinner

So do you think you will be able to enjoy your friends bachelorette party in New Orleans this weekend? Hopefully things will have cleared up by then!

i hope so! we have quite the email chain going today about contingency plans…

Are you still planning on heading to NOLA this weekend?? My boyfriend and I have been planning our trip to NOLA this weekend for months, and with Hurricane Isaac on the horizon I am stressing out!!
Nora
as of right now we are… but we’ve been emailing all day brainstorming back up plans just in case. my fingers are crossed!
julie @ peanut butter fingers
My boyfriend is the same way as you! We both love chicken sausage as well, though. I haven’t had quinoa in forever!! This makes me want to have it again soon.
Miranda @ Biting Life
I totally agree, chicken is fine but my least favorite meat if I had to choose. Lol and I’m glad to hear there are no dead bodies in your house… Haha
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats
LOVE quinoa. Recipe looks fabulous!
Glad the inspection was easy…and no dead bodies were found (human or mouse…haha). Get’cho dishwasher fixed gurl…I had a similar issue with a rental one time…now the problem is fixed because we don’t have a dishwasher
sigh…the joys of modern conveniences…someday!
claire
I wonder how many dead bodies he actually finds LOL.
Christen
I couldn’t agree more about chicken. I barely eat it anymore! Unless it’s really, really, reallyyy good…and then i’ll make an exception. I’m all about fish these days.
Angela @ Health’s Angel
YAY quinoa! I actually like chicken–so good in so much stuff
Annette@FitnessPerks
I’m partially with Ryan on this one. I love chicken and I don’t eat beef and eat very little pork. My favorite way to cook basic chicken is grilled with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Although, I do love me chicken sausage. I also cook a lot with ground chicken. It’s more dry than ground beef because of very little fat content but I usually add a touch more coconut oil when cooking and watch the cooking time carefully. My fiance usually doesn’t know the difference unless I tell him.
Allison
I like chicken, it just has to be jazzed up a bit. If you’re going to give me a chicken breast, at least stuff it or cover it with something, then we’re good.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles
Chicken sausage is my favorite! And there are so many awesome varieties out there, though I too am partial to the Apple Chicken. Yum yum.
Nina @ Sweating It
I feel the same way about chicken! Plain chicken breast is almost always bland and dried out. I’d rather have fish or pork or even red meat anyway.
Blakely @ The Husky Life
Haha! It’s funny you bring that up because the other day when I asked Will what his favorite food was, he said chicken. My response was pretty similar to yours– something along the lines of “WHAT?! Who says chicken!?”
Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance
Ha guess you guys must be good at hiding those dead bodies. Looks like a very protein-packed and tasty lunch!
Jenica
I like chicken, as long as it’s juicy and not dry. I still have nightmares (OK, not really) about the horribly dry chicken my mom used to make as a kid!
Kristen @ notsodomesticated
That looks delicious!!!
Liz @ Tip Top Shape
Definitely trying that sometime this week – it looks delish!
Britt
I had a shrimp quinoa bowl tonight – good minds think alike.
Thanks for the link love.
Brittany
My husband could eat chicken cooked the same way every single day! Me, I get sick of chicken real easy and prefer other sources of protein. I’ll have to try that chicken sausage though!
Torie =)
That’s one of my fave meals….you need to top it with some hummus though
Khushboo
How funny! I am like Ryan and you are like my hubs! He’ll eat every thing first, THEN chicken.
@pluvk
Yum lunch looks good! Oh and congrats for renewing your lease
Bek @ Crave
yeah, i’m kind of over chicken right now. especially when i go out to eat, since i have it regularly at home!
mary
I love chicken sausage. It’s so good and you can use it in meals in so many different ways.
