The Most Brutal Exercise on the Planet

I think jumping lunges are making a run at burpees for the most brutal exercise on the planet.

In today’s Best Body Boot Camp lower body tabata workout, Tina paired jumping lunges with a lunge/squat combination exercise with only 10 seconds of rest between the two. During the workout I was cursing Tina, but afterward I wanted to give her a hug because the workout was tough yet doable and 10 times more entertaining than a basic leg workout.

My fellow boot bampers, did that combination kill you or what!?

(If you’re a Best Body Boot Camp fan or have been wanting to try it out, rumor has it that one of the Healthy Holidays Giveaway Week giveaways just maaaay include three free entries into the next round of BBBC!)

When I arrived home from the gym, I made myself a strawberry banana protein smoothie for breakfast.

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 spoonful cashew butter

what alice forgot

What Alice Forgot!

We’ll be discussing this book on the blog on January 7. Happy reading!

Question of the Morning

  • What exercise do you think is the most brutal exercise on the planet?

While jumping lunges make me die a little inside, burpees still win the honor of the most horrific exercise in the whole wide world.

  1. says

I agree about the jumping lunges – those are tough! I’d actually happily take burpees over jumping lunges. I think it’s partly to do with the fact that I feel like I’m going to trip over my feet due to my generally clumsy nature. I’m also afraid of box jumps – I’m still in awe of Ryan’s crazy high jump. How does he do it?!

  2. says

ugh my legs were screaming and I was cursing Tina as well, but loved the burn! I despise working my legs so this was a great way to get a good workout and beat the boredom I usually experience doing mundane leg exercises! Yayy I am excited for What Alice Forgot!

  3. says

Oh, I love jumping lunges! But jumps squats are killers. I didn’t do very well with the workout this morning.

So excited that What Alice Forgot won! Get ready, because once you start it, you won’t be able to put it down. I can’t wait to read your review.

  4. says

I feel like I could do jump squats/lunges all day. Love ’em! Now Gorilla Squats?? 30 secs at most…. sometimes not even that much! Ouch!
I am still perfecting the burpee so I know I take them too slow, but as I am getting better and faster with them I can totally see why they would qualify as the worst move ever!

  5. Jackie Vore says

I would have to say hamstring ball curls are the worst for me! Coming from someone who is not super coordinated, this proves to be a very difficult exercise. But I am always glad I did them when it’s all over!

  6. says

Lunges. Jumping lunges suck, but I hate them during my Bodyworks class because weighted & having to hunker down & hold & pulse w/a bunch of weight is pretty brutal too! Def not on my favs list! I’m sure burpees rank right up there w/them! Yikes.

  7. says

I agree with jumping lunges. They hurt my knees if I do too many of them (and I inherited my mom’s knee problems, so I have to be EXTRA careful about it. 🙁 )

I’ve never actually done a burpee before, so I don’t know if I’d hate it more or not, though.

  8. LeAnne says

I’m not doing BBBC, but I did a workout this morning that incorporated a bunch of burpees, lunge jumps, pushup jacks, and squat jumps…ouch. I am convinced that burpees are the most brutal of them all though!!!

  9. Darrecia says

Burpees for the win! I hate jumping lunges and jumping squats purely out of fear of messing up my knees, or already fragile hips. Tuck jumps are usually pretty brutal especially in an intense cardio circuit, but I usually enjoy the challenge a bit more.

  10. Kelly says

Burpees are always the worst for me. Some day I bet that will need to change, but there are so many alternatives that I think I’ll stick with those!

  11. says

wow jump lunges with lunges/squats sounds so tough! As many people have said, I have a love hate relationship with burpees. But I would say I hate rowing the most, it doesnt look hard, but its boring and hard!

  12. says

    Hi Julie!

Have you ever used Gliding Discs before? I have a love/hate relationship with them. They make core and leg work SO tough but so rewarding at the same time!

Aside from those, my vote goes to tricep dips and tuck jumps. Ow.

  13. says

Haha jumping lunges are pretty rough but I don’t hate them! I actually started doing them during the workout this morning and found they were hurting my knees. Since I’m already injured I didn’t want to risk anything so I did burpees instead!

  14. says

Okay, so I was really hoping for Code Name Verity there, but that’s the marvelous thing about book clubs. You read books you normally wouldn’t read. 🙂

And burpees, hands down, eat my lunch every day of the week.

  15. says

Well, this is terrifying. Haha. I do my Best Body Bootcamp workouts as soon as I get home after work. Maybe today would be a good day to stay late at the office 😉 Haha. I actually don’t hate burpees as much as I used to. I don’t usually do them 100%, though (eliminate the jump at the end), so maybe that’s why they’re not so brutal for me.

  16. amanda says

Most definitely! That combination was brutal enough that I had trouble leaping between lunges. I even slightly tripped over my own feet at one point which made me feel like a total dork. Legs.Officially.Wiped.Out!

  17. JessicaR says

Bulgarian split squats are horrific. I usually do them with 25 to 35lbs in each hand and hate every second! I even hate them unweighted.

  18. says

For some reason I absolutely hate mountain climbers. Sometimes they don’t even feel as hard as other moves, but they just flat out annoy me. Therefore, I avoid them at all costs.

  19. says

I just trained in Les Mills GRIT Series & I can pretty much say that combining burpees with jump squats onto a high bench is the worst. SO tough. Not to mention doing jumping lunges after doing a bunch of high jump work & squats. OUCH.

    Love a good smoothie. Mmmmm

  20. Jeanie Gasson says

I love jumping lunges! I have nicknamed the “Leaping Limas”, after one of the characters in a childhood novel I enjoyed. However, I despise box jumps, crab walks, bear crawls, and moving planks! Also excited about the book. I think I may take advantage of a Barnes and Noble sale and purchase it asap!

  21. Amanda says

I just got an email saying “What Alice Forgot” is ready for me to pickup at my library! So excited to finally read something along with your book club. I’ve been meaning to participate. Sooo excited!

  22. Lisa says

I love reading about your workouts! It’s really motivating 🙂 I’m finally getting back into the gym today after taking a break for the last almost 3 weeks due to a badly bruised rib. I figured I would be better off just taking a bit of time off to heal so I didn’t hurt myself worse. I’m so excited to finally get to see my new gym! Step mill, here I come!

  23. Lindsey says

I would definitely put lunge jumps up there as one of the toughest exercises especially if super setting with another leg exercise. Most people find burpees hard but I love them. I’m currently doing a burpee challenge for the month of Dec. You start at 50 burpees on dec 1st, then add one each day until Dec 31 st (dec 2nd 51, dec 3rd 52, dec 4th 53, etc.) Its great, you should try it.

  24. Lauren says

My legs can go forever, but I find those yoga/pilates “sit up and then lie back down in 10, 9, 8, etc” moves to be absolutely brutal. One or two is fine… but when an instructor wants you to do upwards of ten in an hour it gets really brutal.

  25. Erin says

I would waaaay rather do burpees than jumping lunges! Unless they are burpee pull ups, weighted burpees, or any other awful variation of the already less than desirable exercise!
I would LOVE a pair of shoes that don’t slip, I always struggle with my Nikes and mountain climbers…so please put me down for the shoes!!

  26. Heather says

I love difficult exercises!!! Makes me feel like I have acomplished something great when I am finished! My favorite difficult exercise(s) is core work on the Bosu!!

  27. Holly says

I love those shoes! I have gone through three pairs of shoes this year as I started my health journey – I have a pair now that are TOO BIG and I keep slipping on the workout floor for Zumba and other classes I love!

  28. Steph says

I actually DESPISE mountain climbers… my shoulders and hip flexors wear out before my lungs and legs do and it’s so frustrating!

  29. Liz says

Jillian Michael’s likes to incorporate jumping lunges into her workouts.. I’d have to agree, extremely brutal! But also, not as brutal as the “partner burpees” my kick boxing teacher used to torture the class with: in between push-ups at the bottom you’d have to high five your partner doing the same thing. It was awful!

  30. says

I would have to agree with jumping lunges…although after the last phase I hated burpees pretty badly so I think they’ll still top the list for me. But yes it did! And she made the workout go by quickly!

  31. Karen says

Jumping lunges do suck but I believe burpees are the worst. I remember trying to avoid any Crossfit WODs that had them in them. LOL

  32. says

I am SO with you – burpees = death. High-low/up-down planks are another exercise that I hate but I do because it’s good for me (I usually do them when I’m totally winded from burpees, LOL).

I used to dread plyometric lunges, but I’ve found that they’re easier if you swing your arms forward and back in sync with the jumping. Now that I can tolerate them, I’m back to making them harder by using a medicine ball. So. Much. Fun.

  33. says

I agree with burpees and jumping lunges as killer exercises. Another one that is definitely on my love-to-hate list is renegade rows. These look so simple, but OMG!! If you’ve never tried them, give them a shot. 😉

  34. Tara says

I want to participate 1) because you rave about the workouts and 2) I’m bored with my current routine at my gym. Could use some direction during these winter months!

  35. says

There’s the yoga version of crunches that will have you crying blood ; it’s called the boat pose. I started doing it to tighten and tone my abs, but the first few days were pure, unadulterated hell. You have your legs half raised while lying down, along with your torso. The only part of you that touches the floor is your tailbone. Great workout, but the pain? Enough to give you a hernia!
