Last Minute Mother’s Day Gift Guide

May 6, 2015 by Julie 31 Comments

Mother’s Day is this Sunday and if you happen to be a last-minute shopper, don’t you worry because I’ve got you covered! When I put together a Mother’s Day Gift Guide last year, I had a little too much fun brainstorming ideas and wanted to be sure to feature one on PBF again in 2015.

Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

I divided this Mother’s Day gift guide into categories to make it easy to pull out suggestions that might best cater to your mom or a mother figure in your life who deserves to feel extra special on Sunday. I hope something pops out at you!

For The Mom Who Loves Experiences vs. Things

  • Special Date with YOU

winery and tea 059

If you happen to be fortunate enough to live close to your mom, my favorite Mother’s Day gift idea is a special date for some quality time with YOU! When I used to live close to my mom, my sister and I often collaborated and treated my mom to a girls’ day. Some date ideas: Tickets to a musical or concert, afternoon tea at a local hotel or bed and breakfast, a fancy brunch, spa day, day trip to a local winery, etc.

  • Local Cooking Class

Chef Alyssa

If your mom loves cooking, research local cooking classes! If you can go along with her, that’s all the better, or treat your mom and a date to the experience. I’ve had a wonderful time taking local cooking classes with Ryan in both Orlando and Charlotte and know they’re popular in many areas, so a simple Google search should bring up some cooking classes near you. Many local cooking classes have theme nights, so you can hand-pick a class that would appeal to your mom. Does she love pasta? Maybe they have a pasta night class! Is she all about the sweets? Many cooking classes have a dessert-only class pop up on their schedules from time to time. (For Charlotte-area locals, check out Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen!)

Another similar idea for moms who prefer cooking in their own kitchen? A week of Blue Apron meals! I set my mom up with a week of Blue Apron meals in the past and she loved them so much that she now orders them regularly! For those who may be new to Blue Apron, it’s a wonderful service that includes the delivery of all the ingredients you need to make the latest chef-designed recipe.

  • Gift Certificate for a Massage or Manicure/Pedicure

Spa Gift Card

Many of the moms I know rarely splurge and treat themselves to a massage or a manicure or pedicure at a favorite local salon. A gift certificate is a great way to make sure your mom gets the pampering she so very much deserves!

For The Hard-To-Buy-For Mom

  • Specialty Candles

Rewined Candle

Is it just me or are candles a gift that every mom out there loves? When it comes to gifting candles, I love to wrap up something a little more unique than what you might find at Target and gravitate toward specialty candles like those from Rewined (<—available on Amazon Prime for last-minute shoppers!) or Anthropologie. This Capri Blue candle frequently sold at Anthropologie can also be found on Amazon and smells incredible. My Pure Barre studio regularly burns it and we’re all in love with the scent!

  • Mother’s Day Gift Basket / Grab Bag

Mother's Day Gift Basket

I actually went this route this year and sent off two mini gift baskets to my mom and mother-in-law yesterday. (Let’s hope they skimmed this blog post and aren’t reading too closely!) Fill a gift basket or grab bag with favorites you know your mom loves or little necessities like makeup removing wipes, mints, travel-size lotion, lip balm, etc.

  • Cute Mug or Tumbler + Mom’s Favorite Coffee or Tea

Celestial Seasonings Giveaway

Pair a cute new mug with a bag of mom’s favorite coffee or a new specialty tea! I love the initial mugs you can find at Anthropologie (they’re also available with a more feminine design) and Starbucks always has some adorable tumblers for the moms who like their morning coffee or tea to go.

For The Active Mom

  • Activity Tracker / Stylish Tracker Bracelet

Tory Burch FitBit

Activity trackers continue to grow in popularity and if your mom doesn’t already have one, consider gifting her a Polar Loop, Fitbit or Jawbone tracker to help inspire her to continue to lead an active lifestyle. If your mom already owns a Fitbit, look for a stylish tracker bracelet that will allow her to continue to keep track of her activity by placing the tracker in a cute bracelet for days when she doesn’t want to wear the traditional athletic-looking band. (This Tory Burch Fitbit bracelet is adorable but not cheap.)

  • Active Day Trip

mother daughter shoes

This is a budget-friendly idea, perfect for active moms who love just spending time with you and their loved ones. You can easily cater this one to your mom’s preferred activities! Does she love hiking? Take the time to pack up a picnic lunch and find some new local trails to explore with her. Is she a water lover? Research local springs, lakes or beaches and schedule a day sometime this spring or summer where you both enjoy some time in the water and sun together. Bonus: Give her a new towel or sunglasses when you tell her about the special day you have planned on the water or wrap up a new water bottle and comfy socks if you’re taking her hiking or biking!

  • New Workout Apparel

lululemon 105 singlet

Does your mom need a new workout top or pullover? Maybe she’d love new workout capris or a new pair of running shorts now that summer is almost here?

Some favorites: Lululemon Principle Tank and 105 Singlet (nice and flowy!), Nike Tempo Running Shorts (my go-to running shorts), Athleta Heavenly Hail Hoodie

For The Fashion/Beauty Lover

  • Initial Necklace

initial bar necklace

I actually just gifted an initial gold bar necklace to my friend Leah after she had her baby in March with her baby boy’s initial on it! If there’s a new mom in your life that you think deserves an extra smile, consider wrapping up an initial necklace featuring her child(ren)’s initials.

Some favorites: Kate Spade Initial Necklace, BaubleBar Initial Bar Pendant

  • Body Butter

Body Butter

A thick and creamy body butter is a great gift for moms who love to feel a little pampered every day. Body butter is thicker (and, in my opinion, seemingly more luxurious) than lotion and does a great job of moisturizing even the driest skin!

Some favorites: The Body Shop Coconut Body Butter, Kiehl’s Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter, Whish Pomegranate Body Butter (<—a personal favorite I first discovered through my Birchbox subscription that smells absolutely incredible!)

  • Stitch Fix Gift Card

Stitch Fix Box

In the past, I’ve given both my mom and my mother-in-law Stitch Fix gift cards and love hearing all about their latest fixes! This personal styling service allows your mom to fill out a style profile on the Stitch Fix website and have a box of clothes and accessories sent her way to choose from before sending whatever she doesn’t like back. My mom is a big fan and I love getting picture text updates from her whenever a new fix arrives!

  • New Slippers

Slippers

I don’t know about you, but I can never have enough slippers! A beautiful pair of comfortable slippers may be a welcomed gift for moms out there who love to cuddle up on the couch at the end of a long day. I’ve seen a bunch of adorable lightweight slippers at Marshalls recently that I think would make a great gift!

  • Beach Tote

Hayden Reis Tote

With summer on the horizon, a cute oversize beach tote is a great gift for moms who love to spend time at the pool or beach! Fill it with a new towel and some sunscreen for an additional surprise! For affordable totes, check out Target or TJMaxx! I see adorable totes (like this one and this one) at Target all the time! Looking to splurge? I love the extra large “Ditty” beach totes from Hayden Reis.

One of the best gifts I’ve gotten my mom is a pair of warm and cozy slippers. She wears them all the time.

Rewined candles are the best!!! They burn clean & their scents are amazing! Great suggestions, Julie! I ended up getting my mom some work out gear for the tap class she is taking. 🙂

I love this roundup, especially the experiences you suggested! I always like to do something with my mom for mothers day rather than buy her something. so those are great ideas! Just think, at this time next year, baby PBF will be celebrating you!

I always try to spend time with my mom for mother’s day. This year she is traveling, but I made plans for a mother/daughter pedicure and manicure for last weekend. Not only was I able to treat my mom to something special (and myself too 🙂 ) but, we got to spend some quality time together. Happy early Mother’s Day to you!

When I lived in the same state as my Momma, I would ALWAYS give her activities and events. We did tea at the Ritz in Orlando, saw a few shows and even went wine tasting. These days, I send a plant from afar. ;(

Anthropologie candles are my favorite, and I had no idea they sold a version of them on Amazon. Thanks! That will probably be a Mother’s Day gift I give to myself. 🙂

Awesome collection of great ideas! I am on top of it this year but I will use this guide for next year. I ordered her a book from LoveBookOnline of all the reasons why I love her with notes and illustrations. It is 50 pages and so cute!

Great list, Julie! I love doing gift baskets for both my mom and dad for special occasions. It’s a great way to put together their favourite things & make them feel extra spoiled!

This year my boyfriend and I are hosting a Mother’s Day brunch for our families. We wanted to celebrate our favourite mama’s and take care of all the cooking and cleaning for them. Both our mom’s love to host things, but we wanted to take a turn and pamper them!

Is the scent of the Capri Blue Candle you like “Volcano”? I know that’s what you linked to but wanted to double check because there other scents available online under the ‘Capri Blue Jar’ name. I take my candles seriously 🙂
