Chocolate Covered Strawberry Smoothie

May 28, 2010 by Julie 33 Comments

Sometimes a random experiment just works.

Throughout my workout this morning (BodyPump + 25 minutes on the elliptical), I was daydreaming about a creamy, cold smoothie for breakfast.

After leaving the gym and taking a quick shower, I headed downstairs to the kitchen to get crackin’. I opened the freezer and *gasp* no frozen bananas were to be found! 🙁

Instant sadness set in, but I was determined to get a little creative and still make a stellar smoothie.

I had a bunch of frozen strawberries on hand, and decided to use the berries as the smoothie’s base, rather than a banana like I typically would.

Into the blender went:

  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 large scoop All the Whey chocolate protein powder
  • ¾ c. almond milk
  • ½ tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 6 ice cubes

The result was a chocolate covered strawberry smoothie!

I'll Take Some o' That!

I figured the chocolate flavors in the protein and cocoa powders would overwhelm the strawberries, but the fruity flavor held its own.

It didn’t seem like my blender was all that full until I started blending and the smoothie seemed to grow.

I filled up a very large cup and had a couple of spoonfuls leftover in the blender, which I enjoyed with a spoon.

With or without bananas, smoothies are the jam.

I must have that frozen banana, too! I have tried other frozen fruit but it is just never the same. That smoothie looks delicious, tho. 🙂

Cute dress! I have recently discovered oats in my smoothie is a great staple to keeping me full. I would say that is my smoothie “must-have.”

Wow that is one thick smoothie! Just the way I like it. When you add protein powder to it, does it change up the taste any? I always get scared it will taste more chalky.

i think it can depend on the protein powder, but i usually find that adding it to smoothies really adds MORE flavor, sweetness and creaminess. i love it!

I just tried wheat grass in my smoothie last night and it was a massive fail. I think I need to add way more flavor next time. I don’t naturally find that taste pleasant. Ick.

I love how smoothies “grow” in the blender! And that is sad you were out of frozen bananas but seems like you made the best of it!

I must have bananas in my smoothies, preferably frozen ones. Strawberry + chocolate is a killer combo!

My only smoothie staples are fruit of some sort, spinach, and protein powder. Other than that I play with the different combos.

I just watched the video. . . you are the gosh darn cutest thing in the world. I don’t know why hearing you talk compounds how cute you are, but it does. (and if cute is too “cute” of a term for you, then I could also substitute gorgeous)

I love how volumious shakes and smoothies always turn out to be… one of my favorite lunches is actually to make a huge chocolate protein shake and put it in a big salad bowl! Its like eating a never-ending Wendy’s Frosty. I had one today!

1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder

I prefer to always have a banana in mine – though I never use frozen banana as I like my smoothies room temperature… though if I am making more of an “ice cream” treat, or a frosty (spoon-able smoothie) then I use some frozen items… I do have a problem with frozen bananas tasting a bit bitter though – any ideas why?
