HOT Run

August 26, 2011 by Julie 108 Comments

After Sadie’s intense trash talking this morning, I decided to suck it up and brave a run in the crazy heat.

St. Pete may be one of my favorite places to run in the world.

vinoy park

You can run along the water for miles and watch as fish jump and dolphins come up for air (seriously!) and there are always a bunch of other people running and biking which I find really motivating.

The only problem? From May through September the weather is H-O-T. If you don’t get your workout done before 8 a.m., the heat and humidity can be too intense to handle.

For some reason the thought of working out in a gym today made me cringe. I was in the mood to be outside, even if the sun was intense.

I knew Sadie would welcome some exercise, so I leashed her up and we completed 5 miles of running/walking around the pier in downtown St. Petersburg.

Physically, the run didn’t feel too hard, but the heat definitely slowed me down. I was also very aware of Sadie’s reaction to the heat, so we took quite a few water breaks and even sat under a shady tree for a few minutes about three quarters of the way through our run.

Sadie can handle the distance of a long run (she did every long run of my last half marathon training plan with me), but the heat gets to her.

sadie walk breaks

Even though I was a hot mess at the end of our run/walk, I was really glad that I got out there. Outdoor cardio exercise is so much more entertaining than plugging away at the gym on a treadmill or an elliptical to me.

Snack + Lunch

When Sadie and I arrived home, I immediately ate a mini Reese’s peanut butter cup while plating a bowlful of crisp and cool grapes.

IMG_5670-1

Mmm.

No grapes for Miss Sadie though. Grapes + Dogs = Bad idea! Did you know that grapes/raisins when ingested by dogs can lead to kidney failure?

I think Sadie subconsciously knew that she shouldn’t eat grapes because before Ryan and I knew that they were dangerous for dogs, we would toss her a grape and she never knew how to eat them. She’d roll them around in her mouth and spit them out.

sadie grape death

After showering and working for another couple of hours, my mom was a sweetheart and decided to make us a nice sit down lunch! She made a batch of her homemade chicken noodle soup which we enjoyed along with tuna salad and crackers.

IMG_5673-1

My mom’s soup recipe is my all-time favorite. It’s so simple, but simply delicious.

IMG_5674-1

She changes it up from time to time by adding different vegetables or noodles, but the essence of the soup is always the same. I had two bowlfuls and am now quite full.

Time to knock back a few more hours of work. We’re hoping to possibly head to IKEA later tonight before RYAN gets here! I can’t wait to see that handsome fella. Smile

I think Sadie will pass out from excitement when he walks through the door.

I went to Ikea for the first time on Monday. (I’m moving into a new place on the 1st, as well.) That place is AWESOME! And a little overwhelming…

It is crucial to note our pups reaction to the weather was well! Good thing Sadie trash talked you in to getting out there! Despite the heat..it sure looks like you have some amazing scenery.

Good for you for getting out in the heat AND humidity. I don’t know how you do it (I live in a thankfully dry climate) and I love the Sadie comments! And yes I did know grapes/raisins are bad for dogs but I’m glad you put the word out!

p.s. my dog just ate– stole half a snickers bar the other day thankfully he only threw up and that was the end of it yikes!

My dog never ate the grapes we used to give him, but I think it had more to do with him not being able to bite the around grapes with his pointy teeth. Either way, it’s good, because I’m sure we gave him a ton when he was young.
Also, dogs aren’t really supposed to have onions or garlic.

Oh, I can’t imagine running in that heat! I ran today in SoCal and it was about 75-80. I came home super sweaty and I definitely could not wait 2 hours to have lunch 🙂 That’s fun to have a running buddy; Sadie is so cute!

I always used to hate/be unable to run in the heat until I starting running much more frequently. Once you get used to the idea of being a hot sweaty mess, the heat doesn’t make as big of a difference anymore, and you’re a lot more educated about how to pace yourself and adequately hydrate 🙂 I still don’t think I could run in the Florida summer heat though! CHAMP!

I’m with you! I really have to MAKE myself get to the gym, especially during the summer months. Being so close to the mountains makes it almost impossible–I’d much rather go hiking or trail running or mountain biking than stare at my own face in a mirror by the treadmill 🙂

Omg isn’t that crazy about grapes and dogs? My dog actually ate some onion pieces once and went into kidney failure…thank god we got her to vet soon enough!! After that we learned about all the foods that are deathly dangerous to them. Have you ever tried the dark chocolate mini reese’s cups? They are fabulous :). Have SO much fun seeing Ryan!

I love that you and Sadie run together! Charlie (my springer spaniel) is my running partner. We are training for a marathon right now and I’m starting to have water issues. On shorter distances I carry one bottle that Charlie drinks out of- but now that we’re getting into higher mileage, I need water too! I try to pick routes with fountains, but my options are limited- do you have any suggestions? I’ve been looking all over for a harness of some sort that she could carry her own water in, but no luck yet.

i totally know what you mean! fortunately our run today was along public trails, so there were lots of water fountains around. i’ve heard of people driving and stashing waterbottles ahead of time, but that seems like it would be a lot of work…

Good job on your hot run! Sadie is so cute. I have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy (8 months) named Eleanor. Like Sadie, Eleanor LOVES, LOVES, LOVES her humans and wants to be with us all the time. And like Sadie, Eleanor has the cutest smile ever. She is super stubborn and isn’t interested in learning how to shake or play dead, but when we walk I will say, “Eleanor, show me your puppy smile!” And she turns to look at me with that giant mouthed smile of hers. My fiance doesn’t consider that a trick, but Eleanor and I do!
