Lead Legs

October 18, 2011 by Julie 82 Comments

Apparently I got so wrapped up in this morning’s American Girl talk that I forgot to post about my workout.

Or maybe I intentionally blocked it out of my mind since it wasn’t exactly a pleasurable experience?

phenomenal workout

Today’s workout included a five mile run with Sadie. It was one of those “stop, start” runs thanks to Sadie’s itty bitty bladder, but this time I didn’t mind the breaks.

My legs felt incredibly heavy on my run… lead legs! (I blame yesterday’s intense leg workout.) I kept waiting to get into a running groove, but it never happened, so I just trucked along until I was back home.

I know I’ve said it before, but the weekday runs are definitely my least favorite part of half marathon training. I find them to be so redundant after a while, but they’re a necessary evil for me to feel my best on race day and prevent injury.

I’m already looking forward to my workouts once the half marathon is over! I can’t wait to incorporate more circuit and treadmill workouts back into my routine.

In the meantime I’m in the process of making a new running playlist for Saturday’s long run, so if you have any awesome song recommendations, feel free to share because I’m in the market for some good tunes. I’ll be sure to post my playlist once it’s complied.

Lunch

There’s something so yummy about classic tuna salad… but I think salmon salad may give it a run for its money!

I used a pouch of wild caught salmon to make a delicious salmon salad that I served on a whole wheat hot dog bun with an assortment of sides including carrots, pickles, string cheese and Greek yogurt.

I poured the remaining salmon juice from the packet over Sadie’s food which promptly made me her favorite doggie parent for the day.

“Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj and “Run the World” by Beyonce have been fun recent additions to my playlist. As an added bonus, the Glee cast version of the latter is available on iTunes!

I just ran my first marathon two weeks ago and asked the same question to my friends and got some awesome new songs to run to. A few favorites are Press it up by Sean Paul, Pass out by Chris Brown, Miscommunication by Timbaland, I run for life, Melissa Etheridge, Heat of a Champion by Nelly. The hands down best song to ever run to is Til I collapse by Eminem. I’m not the biggest Eminem fan but I swear this song got me through the end of the marathon when I felt like I wanted to collapse at mile 25. Enjoy!

I like Right in the Night by Jam and Spoon, it has a fast beat which helps me keep going. Also I love just about anything by Fragma, especially Toca’s Miracle – I love the way the beat slowly builds up.

Barlow Girl have a few good running songs too – Never Alone (don’t let the piano intro fool you), Beautiful Ending and Come Alive. I always put Mirror Mirror on my playlist, it’s probably not the best running song (a little slower than the others), but it’s one of my favourites 🙂

The songs I love running to right now are so random, but here they are!

    You by Chris Young
I Don’t Want This Night to End by Luke Bryan
Wavin’ Flag by K’naan (Shout out to the Sing Off for this one!)
The Show Goes On by Lupe Fiasco
Right Above It by Lil Wayne & Drake
Take a Back Road by Rodney Atkins
Barefoot Blue Jean Night by Jake Owen
    Voices by Chris Young
Opposite of Adults by Chiddy Bang

some more of my favorites are B.o.B songs. I saw someone else mention him too! His song Magic helped me find my groove with running and The Kids is great too! Also Grip Your Body is hilarious and a fun beat. Mellow Fellow is another of my favorites of his.

I love mixing in a little bit of stuff from the 80s on my workout/running playlists! Some personal favorites are “What a feeling” – that song from Flashdance, “I’m So Excited” by the Pointer Sisters and that Teenage Wasteland song by The Who (this one is great at the end of a run!). I’m also a fan of The Veronicas for running!

Just found this blog and I am training for a half marathon in December. It’s been encouraging seeing your workouts using Hal’s plan! Good luck!

HI Julie – miss you tons! You’re big race is coming up…16 days away!!

Just out of curiosity are you adding any “quality” runs to your training? Speedwork, Tempo runs, etc.? That helps break up the weekday runs. If you are running 3x per week (not including your LR). You should break it up into two SR’s (80% of race pace) and one quality run. And your long runs should be slow and conversational, it’s about logging the miles on LR’s.

Good luck on the last two weeks of training!

Oops forgot to mention a few songs that keep my pumped on my LR’s (also audio books help too!):

    1) Heartbeats – The Knife
    2) Original Sin, Kites, Verona – all 3 songs by Geographer (great for tempo runs…fast, consistent beats).
    3) Airplanes – the Eminem version
