Well, it finally happened. I think we are officially transitioning out of what has felt like an extended summer into the wonderful crisp autumn weather we love here in North Carolina so much! Mid-to-upper 60s and sunny!? Sign me up for that again and again. We’ve had some “false fall” days here and there but I think it’s finally time to really lean into the comfy, cozy staples I love so much. Sweater weather is forever my favorite!
At the start of every season, I try to take inventory of my closet and pull out any items I didn’t find myself reaching for the previous year to donate. Who wants an overly-stuffed closet filled with items you never even wear!? One thing I noticed as I was going through my clothes last weekend was the number of black pants I held onto. Comfortable black pants are a winter and fall wardrobe staple for me for a myriad of reasons. They’re a must-have item I keep in my closet because I reach for them again and again, whether I’m looking for something comfy to wear to a weekend soccer game or find myself wanting to look a little more polished.

The Best Black Pants for Fall and Winter
And for those of you who like a way-too-wordy more in-depth breakdown of this fall wardrobe staple, you’ve come to the right place! First a few body type/sizing notes: I have a pear/triangle body shape with a slimmer waist and fuller thighs, hips (and hip dips!) and a booty. I’m 5’7” and typically a size 6/8 or a 27/28 in denim. For leggings I am often a medium and in shorts I’m often a large or a 28/29. I prefer a roomier fit through the hips and thighs as this feels most comfortable to me. (I joke that I did my time with skinny jeans… never again. They were SO uncomfortable and unflattering on my body.) I like pants that allow for movement and feel as comfortable when you’re sitting as they do when you’re standing. Doesn’t sound like too much to ask, right? But you’d be surprised! Okay, now onto the pants!
These modal pants were such a great find and I liked them so much I bought them in the taupe color, too! The fabric reminds me so much of Spanx Air Essentials but the price point is much lower. A win all around! This Amazon find also comes in petite, regular and long lengths and I was glad I went with the long.
The Vibe: Comfortably relaxed. Ideal for errands, kid activities and running around town.
Why It Wins for Comfort: The material is smooth and soft and drapes well over the body. It’s not too hot on slightly warmer days but it’s also not too light for colder weather. It’s mid-weight perfection!
How I Style It for Fall/Winter: I typically keep it casual with these pants and opt for sneakers or clogs and a tee with a denim jacket or cozy fleece.
My Size: Medium long
You guys know by now my love for the RUTI pants is sky-high. They’ve been worth every penny for me, especially if you price them out on a cost-per-wear model — ha! They’re gorgeous dressed up with a pretty sweater and booties but I wear them most often in everyday mom life because they’re so darn comfortable. The fabric is top-tier as it doesn’t wrinkle and travels well; I wore these pants for more than 24-hours straight during our crazy travel to the Azores and didn’t want to burn them when I took them off which I think is saying something.
The Vibe: Polished, relaxed, elevated, unique structure, travel-ready.
Why It Wins for Comfort: Soft drape and effortless fit.
How I Style It for Fall/Winter: With sneakers or clogs and a comfy sweatshirt for day-to-day life. For a dressier look, I love them with a pretty sweater and ankle boots.
My Size: I wear my true size 6 in the regular length. And good news!! They now come in petite and long lengths as well! I am considering ordering the long for a full-length pant option because I know I’ll wear them non-stop.

I love the way this pair of Splits59 cargo pants feels like an updated version of ’90s throwback cargo pants! With an adjustable waistband and slightly tapered leg, they fit well and give any look a fun sporty vibe.
The Vibe: Playful, sporty and fun!
Why It Wins for Comfort: Slouchy, drapey and crazy-comfortable with an adjustable waist.
How I Style It for Fall/Winter: I keep it simple and typically pair these with sneakers and a crewneck sweatshirt, fleece or hoodie. In the summer, I love them with a little tank (seen here).
My Size: I sized up to a large because I did not want any clingy-ness.
I don’t always want to walk Comet or go for hikes in leggings and got these Beyond Yoga hybrid pants as a looser alternative for active days. They’re exactly what I was looking for with a swishy-dry fit material that makes them perfect for movement. I’ve worn them on days when I’ve walked 15k+ steps and they’ve been perfect!
The Vibe: Athletic but make it cute!
Why It Wins for Comfort: Pull-on design (no buttons/zippers digging in), dry-fit fabric ideal for movement and active lifestyles.
How I Style It for Fall/Winter: Sporty Spice, babyyy! I mostly wear these with athletic tops and sweatshirts but they look cute styled with a denim jacket and fun sneakers, too!
My Size: I accidentally ordered the medium in the shorter (29”) length but it turned out to be a happy accident because I ended up loving the slightly cropped look.
I fell in love with the red version of these pants when I ordered them for a trip to NYC with my college friends last month. I knew I needed them in a more neutral staple and opted for black because black pants > all other pants for me. They’re perfect for a slightly dressier look but equally cute dressed down.
The Vibe: Effortless polish.
Why It Wins for Comfort: The fabric is that kind of breezy linen fabric that works well for all-day wear.
How I Style It for Fall/Winter: I love these pants with fun flats or a kitten heel and a feminine sweater or casual long-sleeve top.
My Size: Medium
I’ve been eyeing a pair of pants from alo that looked so similar to this Amazon find so when this one popped up as a recommended item for me on Amazon, I figured they were worth a shot. They were an instant win the moment I pulled them on. The fabric is relaxed and drapes well over the hips and legs. They’re not too thick but not too thin and work well with so many different tops, whether I want to lean into a sporty vibe or a comfy, cozy look. They’re a great day-to-day life pant I’ve found myself reaching for over and over again.
The Vibe: Effortless cool girl athleisure.
Why It Wins for Comfort: Easy, relaxed drape that feels silky against the skin.
How I Style It for Fall/Winter: Sneakers and a comfy top or a cropped tee with a fun jacket.
My size: I ordered a medium in the long (32”) length but they’re also available in 28” and 30” inseams.
When I want WARM black pants, these Amazon barrel sweats are the pants I grab! They’re thick, warm and cozy and perfect for sitting on the sidelines watching the boys’ games when the temperatures drop. They keep me warm but have a little more structure to the leg that I love because I feel like it makes them look a little less sloppy than traditional sweats.
The Vibe: Ultimate warm cozy comfort!
Why It Wins for Comfort: Thick material with a fleece inside that feels so warm and cozy against my legs.
How I Style It for Fall/Winter: Sweatshirt and a long puffer vest with UGGs or sneakers with thick crew socks.
My size: Medium.
Simple Ways to Style Black Pants for Fall and Winter
I think what I love most about a solid pair of black pants is their sheer versatility. They act as a blank canvas for your wardrobe, making it a little easier to look put-together even on those frantic mornings when you are trying to get everyone out the door. A pair of soft wide-leg black pants paired with a chunky-knit sweater = Instantly cute but also incredibly comfortable.
As we head into the true cold-weather months, here are a few simple styling formulas I find myself subconsciously following that keep my favorite black pants on heavy rotation:
- The Layered Athleisure Vibe: When I’m heading to the boys’ soccer games or running errands around town, I love pairing black pants with an oversized crewneck sweatshirt, a long puffer vest, a neutral baseball cap and sneakers. It feels like pajamas but the added layering makes the look feel a little more intentional.
- Sweater + Fun Jewelry: For an effortless everyday look, pair your pants with an oversized cozy sweater (the 100% organic cotton Quince boyfriend cardigan is my fav). I like to roll up the sleeves of my sweaters to show off a fun bracelet stack or layer up some necklaces to add a little interest.
- The Elevated Night Out: To take your more structured pants —like the Amazon trousers or RUTI pants —into evening wear for a night out or date night, I love wearing a bodysuit or a flirty, flowy top and a pair of ankle booties.
What to Wear with Black Pants: The Footwear Transition (From Fall to Winter)
The secret to keeping your ankles warm while wearing cropped or straight-leg black pants during a true winter cold snap comes down to footwear. In October, I love styling these pants with simple mules, flats, clogs and sneakers.
Once the temperature really drops later in the season, I switch exclusively to ankle boots that tuck up neatly under the hem of the pants, or I opt for cozy, shearling-lined winter boots or sneakers with thick socks for maximum warmth.
