Another Half Marathon?

November 6, 2012 by Julie 83 Comments

After working through the morning, by the time lunchtime rolled around, I was ready to get out of the house and exercise my right to vote.

I quickly made myself an egg sandwich on honey wheat toast, topped with a mixture of hummus, fresh dill, goat cheese and chopped vegetables.

The hummus vegetable mixture was actually leftover from the Mediterranean dip appetizer that my sister made for our Friendsgiving feast!

After I ate my sandwich, I headed out to vote. I anticipated long lines and pulled into a parking lot filled with exactly four cars.

Voting in Ocala at lunchtime was a rather speedy process.

And now we wait. Smile

Workout

I suppose I should touch on my workout for the day to keep things somewhat consistent around here. Before publishing my morning blog post, I took Sadie out for a five-mile run.

I am already loving the time change and the beautiful early morning sunlight that allows me to run before 7 a.m. without trepidation.

I usually listen to one of my favorite workout playlists when I go running and reserve podcasts for walks with Sadie, but today I ran to the latest Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me podcast from NPR and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it!

I figured I would miss the beat of my music and the energy I derive from some of my favorite workout songs, but the podcast distracted me and made my run pass quickly since I was really into the trivia. My pace wasn’t quite as fast as usual, but laughing out loud on a run just isn’t something that happens when I run to Usher or some of my favorite ‘90s jams. Highly entertaining!

I think I may look into downloading more podcasts and possibly audio books for the long runs of my half marathon training plan when I start training for the ZOOMA Florida half marathon in a couple of weeks. If you have any audio book recommendations, I’m all ears! (Pun!)

And speaking of half marathons…

Another Half Marathon?

Have any of you guys participated in the Miami Marathon or Half Marathon?

miami

My friend Merri is trying to rally a group of our girlfriends to do this race together in January. Since I’ll already be trained for the ZOOMA Florida half marathon by then, I’m 95 percent sure this race will find its way onto my calendar.

It looks like my 2013 will begin with a lot of running!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I listened to the same thing on my 5 miler this morning! 🙂 I have been listening to audiobooks for my half training recently and SERIOUSLY they make the time fly by! And it makes me look forward to my longer runs because I want to keep reading (um listening) to the book! I’d recommend Still Alice by Lisa Genova.. So good! I’m listening to Gone Girl now 🙂

Michelle and I ran the half last year. It was a good race and really fun to run through the city. It was a hot one, even in January. I probably wouldn’t do it again, but I am glad I did it. 🙂

I ran the full Miami ING in 2010. I loved it! To date its been my only full marathon though so I don’t have anything to compare it to. It was a little crowded at the beginning but that’s b/c I waited and started in the back. It might have been better if I started with my wave. I thought the weather was perfect! It was like in the 60s. And I thought the views were awesome! =) I also have a friend who is thinking about doing it and also wants me to do the half…I’m still debating.

I’m a hugeee fan of listening to Joyce Meyer podcasts while I’m out for a walk or run. If you’re ever in the mood for some spiritual mojo, I’d highly recommend her 😉

If you enjoyed the latest wait wait you should check out panelist Luke Burbank’s podcast Too Beautiful too Live. I have pretty much listened everyday for 3 years I love it. Check out some of the older ones too the old co-host Jen Andrews was phenomenal.

I have found that listening to audio books while running only really works with an easy to follow book or a book you have already read. Otherwise, if you zone out for a minute or two while you are running, you can find that you missed a really important part of the book! I usually try to stick to books I have already read and after I finish the audio book I am listening to now, I’m going buy all the Harry Potter books on audio!! Can’t wait 🙂 It’s going to make my runs so much fun!

After not being able to run Sunday’s NY Marathon, I immediately felt the need to sign up for another full Marathon. Pronto. Unfortunately my crazy schedule the next two months with family-related shenanigans means that I couldn’t do Philly, Harrisburg, or some of the other marathons taking NY refugees. So I will be there in Miami!! Doing the full!

When I was debating, I put feelers out there and found several friends that have done the half (no full friend finishers!) and ALL had a positive experience and really enjoyed it. I think I’m going to make a nice little 4-day weekend out of it, and I’ll have training buddies with some of my Team For Kids running mates from the summer/fall NY training.

    Hope to see you there!!

Haha I love it! This blog is — indeed — the JAM. I’m trying to make my blog as jammy as possible too, and in the process have come across some really delightful ones. 🙂

See you Saturday!? I think we need to name our little group of Miami trainers something fun…

I love listening to podcasts when I run, and it’s so much fun to read your comments section and see that not only am I in good company, but also that a lot of the podcasts that I listen to were already recommended! Love it!

Here’s another great podcast to download – the “savage love cast” by Dan savage…it’s a sex-advice podcast! So juicy, and Dan is hilarious. Totally makes the miles fly by!

    Have fun!

A Miami half-marathon sounds fun! I’ve currently got my eye on a 10-mile race in Chapel Hill, NC next year. I’ve never run that far before but I think it might be a fun challenge!
