I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

Lucy first learned how to sit. Lucy has yet to learn how to actually walk on a walk. Hey, she’s a bulldog; I don’t know what I expected!
The first trick I taught my Riley was to sit, and the one trick she still hasn’t mastered is “speaking” on command.
My Yorkie Simon’s first trick was roll over and he never quite mastered the handshake trick (“paw”) because he hates having his feet touched! 🙂
Of course we taught our furbaby “sit” first, but I’m not sure I consider that a trick. The first real trick we taught his was shake. So cute! He hasn’t quite mastered “crawl”!
First trick… To get in her travel bag when you say “want to go shopping?” It is pretty cute!!!
Our dachshund is stubborn but she mastered roll over (play dead) pretty quickly. She only has one back leg though so she never mastered sit pretty
Ohhh…my two guys would love this giveaway!! The first trick we taught Dex and Hurley was to sit and stay. Dex just doesn’t get roll-over (or just doesn’t want to get it) and Hurley can only roll-over to the left side. 🙂
I first taught her how to fetch. We’re currently stuck on that one!
Sit was the first trick we taught our Vizsla, Colby. I always try to do the balance-the-food-on-your-nose trick, but she can’t sit still or leave the food that close to her nose long enough!
Ah fun! My vizsla would love a box like that! He first learned sit and he is still working on beg. 🙂
My dog only listens to “stay” and “sit” when she feels like it -she’s a princess and when i try to teach her tricks she looks at me like i’m insane. She thinks she’s a person, not a dog – but she would LOVE this barkbox 🙂
Ella’s first trick was learning how to sit (although she still can’t sit still for over 5 minutes). I taught her to lie down and she knows how to do it but she doesn’t really get the point; she’ll take it as a sign that she should roll over so that whoever is around can rub her tummy!
The first trick I taught my dog was how to sit…and that’s pretty much the only trick they know!
The first trick was definitely sit!
I first taught my golden retriever, Aiden, to sit. He’s mastered all sorts of tricks since then, but he still has trouble with being told to stay as I leave the room, I’d like to think it’s because he’s too attached to me 🙂 but i’m too attached to him for that matter!
We taught Tucker sit with the palm up hand signal, no words, as a puppy. Still use it today! Neither of the boys can seem to master roll over on command.
I have a Weimaraner named Luna (Looney Luna) and the first trick we taught her was shake. Little did we know she’d use it to get our attention as now when she wants you to pay attention to her she’ll come up and “smack” you with her little paw.
The first trick we taught our awesome Boxer rescue was to “leave it.” Watching him eye the treats on his paws just waiting to devour them was too cute. Dogs are the bestest!!!
My mini weiner dog mastered her first trick of how to play dead when you make a gun with your hands and say bang in about five min. She just cannot get the hang of how to beg. She always falls over. Must be her long body.
I have a chocolate lab named Grizzly that would love Barkbox! The first “trick” we taught him was sit and stay. We keep working on shake which he just hasn’t gotten yet, but I’m sure if we keep at it consistently he will get it.
What was the first trick you taught your dog? –Shake!
What is one trick your dog could never quite master? –jumping through a hoop :/
The first real trick we taught our black lab was to shake, now every time we pull a treat out he automatically shakes. Love seeing your pictures of Sadie, dogs truly are the best! I can’t imagine life without our little buddy!
Our first trick was “high five”, which is usually called paw. (He will not respond to “paw”) Our pup will never ever learn to play dead. He is much to curious and afraid to miss out on any action in order to lay on his back for a few seconds 🙂
First trick: We taught our dog how to ring the bell on the back door so we know when he had to go potty! (worked a little tooooo well)
Not mastered trick: how to actually open the back door to let himself out 🙂
My dog’s first trick was “sit” but the best trick I taught her was “Go get the newspaper!” She loves doing that one 🙂
The trick she had a hard time with was “Roll over.” She can do it, but she has joint problems and I think maybe that makes it hard for her? Most of the time she rolls half way and then comes down the same way instead of flipping to the other side! She is a goof.
AWESOME! My dog CANNOT get ‘roll over.’ We’ve tried teaching him a million times and he just doesn’t get it!! 😀
My pup learned how to sit first but she’s still working on stay, I have to continually day stay stay stay and the minute I stop talking she moves
I know this isn’t a trick, but my dog is very obedient. We aren’t afraid to take him outside without a leash because of how well he listens. As for the trick he could never master, I’d say all of them! We still love him though. 🙂
The first real trick my dog Nutmeg learned was roll over, and it was my dog walker who taught her! My favorite trick that I taught her is “who’s the best,” when someone asks her “Nutmeg, who’s the best?” she’ll go over and touch their foot! I really wanted to teach her to play dead but she never quite got that one. Staying still while waiting for a treat is not her thing!!
The first trick we taught Bozley was to sit! He’s got it mastered because it usually means he is getting something.
Still not mastered: Come! Here! or anything like it. He just loves everyone so much he MUST say hi.
Since our dog was a rescue he already knew how how sit – so we taught him to “do kiss” which he happily does every time. Now if he consistently learn how to “drop” it would make the game of fetch more fun for the humans 🙂
Dudley’s first trick was sitting. We still are working on stay! He would absolutely love this giveaway!
We adopted our dog when we was about 2 years old. The first trick we taught him, aside from sit, was to put his paws up on our chest for a hug. He hasn’t mastered lay down which is next on our list but he is very good at heeling!
I’ve been intrigued about those BarkBoxes for a while!
Ausha, our Vizsla, learned to “Surrender” first but has never quite mastered the “bow” command! Maybe because she also doesn’t like to lay? You’ll often find all her tricks are compounded when she knows some sort of treat is involved!
I taught my dog to “spin” right and left pretty much right away. He mastered spinning right very quickly, but he was super confused for a few days about spinning left. I guess he must be right handed (er, pawed), because the only trick he hasn’t been able to learn (and he knows a ton of tricks!) after four years is rolling over on his left side. He can’t even conceive of doing such a thing! :p He’s the best little stinker ever.
Puppie’s first trick was learning to sit & shake (which she has mastered!)
Hardest trick to master? Going outside to potty when it is raining-she’s a diva about getting wet! (but she will go in the people bathroom…so she knows what she is doing!)
Shake a paw!!! My dog Daisy is 13 and she still pulls on the leash. I don’t think she will ever learn to heel.
I would love to win a barkbox subscription! We adopted Ginger when she was 2, so I’m not sure of her first trick, but I assume it was “sit.” It’s her best trick and most consistent!
Nugget doesn’t know many tricks- dancing for her treats is the only trick she’s mastered.
I have a viszla mix just like Sadie! Her name is Charlotte and she is my pride and joy! The first command I taught her was “sit.” We are still working on the army crawl! But, she has mastered “play dead”, “lay down”, and “wave.” They are so smart!
I have a lab/hound mix and she is sooo smart! She was able to pick up tricks early on. The first one that she learned was how to sit. But, after many years we still can’t seem to teach her how to roll over. She rolls half way and just lays on her back with her feet in the air and stays like that! Hahahah it sooo cute!
One of the first tricks I taught my chocolate lab was leave it. I think this is so valuable because I am able to keep my dog from ingesting something that could potentially be harmful! One thing our dog hasn’t quite mastered is roll over! she loves belly rubs, but hasn’t quite got the roll over on command part yet!!
Definitely still working on the sit and stay
What a fun concept! I have been meaning to try Bark box for a long time but just haven’t gotten around to subscribing yet! I know Lilly would LOVE to get new surprises every month. The first “real” trick Lilly ever learned was “Find it” which is the doggie equivalent of hide and seek. I will hide treats while she waits in the other room and then she will run around sniffing for them. She loves it and it’s a great trick to wear her brain out. Lilly has never gotten the concept of “come”. She just doesn’t see a reason to come unless there’s food!
Shake our hand would be the first trick and he never quite figured out how to roll over. He hates to be on his back!
We have a pug, and training him to obey has been a challenge to say the least! He’s sort of mastered the sit command, but anything is a lost cause… good thing he’s adorable!
The first trick we taught our mini poodle (Sammi) was to “high five” because she was swatting her paw at us anyway! The one trick she hasn’t learned…how to stop begging!
For some reason my dog will not “shake.” He just sits there and leaves me hanging!
The first trick we taught our mini Aussie was “sit”. He has mastered quite a few other tricks, but now that he knows multiple he struggles with doing just one trick at a time. If you ask him to lay down he will lay down, roll over, spin, shake, and any other trick he can remember, one right after the other. We’re working on doing just the trick we asked him to do!
We have a one-year-old black lab who is still working on mastering lots of tricks! But the first one he learned was to sit and stay. He also has a pretty mean handshake that we taught him using lots of peanut butter treats! 🙂
