I know a bunch of you out there are just as dog-obsessed as I am and this is just one of the many reasons I think you guys are the jam. Dogs are the BEST and I never could have imagined just how much joy and laughter Sadie would bring into my life everyday when Ryan and I first picked up our timid little puppy. (Timid? Oh how times have changed.)
When BarkBox reached out to me to see if my crazy dog would want to try out one of their boxes, I thought it would be a neat way to indulge Sadie a bit with some new treats and toys. Sadie is the kind of dog that basically pees herself over a brand new stick, so I could only imagine how thrilled she would be if she got a package in the mail filled with new treats and toys just for her.
So what is BarkBox?
BarkBox is a monthly box filled with treats, toys and goodies for your dog that is delivered right to your door. Each box contains four to six full-size products, with goodies ranging from creative toys and gadgets to all-natural, healthy treats and more.
Any edible products found in a BarkBox do not include formaldehyde and are made with minimal processing, no glycerin whenever possible, organic ingredients whenever possible and are gluten, soy, corn and filler-free whenever possible. Subscribers can also opt for an allergy-friendly BarkBox for dogs that may be sensitive to beef, chicken, turkey, gluten, wheat, soy and corn. (Users will just need to email support@barkbox.com once they’ve purchased their subscription to get added to the allergy box list.)
The toys and treats are almost always sourced from small local vendors that are not easily found in major pet stores and plans tailored to your dog’s size start as low as $18/month.
Sadie’s first BarkBox included the following goodies:
- Barkworthies Junior Bully Sticks
- Harry Barket Tug n’ Toss Toy
- Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please Snacks
- Baker’s Best Salmon Maple Glaze Treats
Her favorite treat was definitely the Cheese Please snacks!
She gave me the pitiful puppy eyes the minute she caught a whiff after I opened the bag!
The sole ingredient in the treat is cheese, so I knew Sadie would flip for the cheesy little discs when I opened the package. (She’s a cheese lover just like her mama.)
She also had a blast playing with the Tug n’ Toss toy and threw it all around our apartment trying to entice us into a game of tug of war. (It totally worked because we are suckers.)
The treat I wasn’t sure Sadie would like in the box was the Baker’s Best salmon maple teats because at first glance they looked like biscuits. Sadie doesn’t like biscuits and typically gravitates toward meat and cheese-based treats, so I didn’t think the salmon treats would go over well, but she flipped for them!!
She couldn’t get enough!

Love this! My little maltese would go crazy with this fun stuff!
Our dog, Emmie, gives hugs…I think that’s her best trick! Even though swimming/getting into a pool isn’t really a trick, that’s something we’re still trying to master 🙂
The first trick my corgi, Macaroni, learned was “sit”. He’s required to sit before he can eat breakfast or dinner, so he slams his corgbutt down on the ground at the mention of the word. Sometimes he sits so deep that he slides backwards on our hardwood floor. Macaroni has never mastered “shake”. We tried for a few weeks but training meant getting down on the ground with him in order to reach his paw and it was a trick neither of us felt compelled to master. Instead, we’ve taught him “stand up”, a much more practical trick for a dog that’s 1 foot tall and 3 feet long. He’d “sit”, “stand up”, “spin” and “sneak” for the chance to get a BarkBox!
My almost 2 year old Boston Terrier, Howie, will do ANYTHING for treats. He mastered shake (both paws) quickly and my favorite trick of his is crawl (a hilarious army crawl). Howie is still struggling with roll over…perhaps with time. I’ve seen BarkBox online, very fun to see what’s actually inside!
Kona’s first tricks were the puppy school standards, “leave it” and “sit”. We’re still working on mastering the roll over!
I taught my dog how to “speak”…he never really got the whole lay down thing though..
Penny the Vizsla is an agility superstar.. the first thing she learned was to settle in her crate! Something I can never quite master with her is getting a full handstand from her.. I think it is because that’s a lot of body to hold in the air! Lol 🙂
One of the first tricks we taught our dog Sandy was sit. From there she has learned many tricks but one she can’t seem to master is NOT being a garbage digger (if you can call that a trick). We got her from the shelter as a stray so we always say she is reverting back to her days on the street digging in the garbage for food. One day, hopefully she’ll master it. 🙂
My parents’ dog learned to sit pretty quickly, but has since lost her touch (my dad just retired and spends all day relaxing with her, often on the couch even though she is big golden retriever). She still struggles with the stay part. She is amazing and my dad would just love to spoil her even more with a bark box!
While our first boxer, Mr T has mastered the “sit” we are still working on the “no jump” command. He feels like he needs to give everyone a kiss, literally! A bark box would be a great ins entire for him to stay down!
The first ‘trick’ (if you can call it that) that I taught my Great Pyrenees, Ripley, was to nose-poke on command. He does the cutest nudge with his snout whenever he interacts with something new, or if he wants attention. Now, whenever I want his attention or want him interact with people politely rather than pawing, I say “nose-pokes!” Sometimes we even get a tiny big dog kiss out of it!
Bernadine, our beefy bulldog, mastered the ‘sit’ first. The trick that she will never get is rolling over. She is way too beefy & round for that! Her best trick is somehow stealing all of the covers every night!
Love this idea and giveaway! Our dog’s first trick to learn was “sit” (if that counts as a trick…). She was a shelter dog who apparently didn’t get much attention or nurturing, so not only was she not housetrained, but she didn’t know any commands. Now I can say that she’s the best sitter, and for me, the best dog ever 🙂
My little yorkie will love this! Her first trick was sit, and we never quite got her to “down.” I think it’s because she’s a little bundle of energy!
His first trick is sit…. but he’s still a baby, so we’re still working on it!
One of the first tricks we taught our dog was to spin! The weird thing is that she only spins in one direction, no matter how hard we try to get her to spin the other way!!
All of the dogs I’ve ever had have always learned “sit” first!
The first trick we taught both of our dogs was ‘high five’. Our first dog, Nico, quickly mastered the ‘high five’ and ‘roll over’ tricks my husband taught him. But with our second dog, Brady, he got the ‘high five’ but he just couldn’t get the ‘roll over’. But they are still too cute for words!
My golden retriever has SO much energy, he had a terrible time with “stay.” He is still kinda bad at it, but so food motivated that he’ll sit there with a drunk puppy face until we say “OK” and let him come to his treat. 🙂 Looooove!
First trick we taught our labs was to sit … they do it pretty well, but we still have some moments when food is around that I swear they act like they’ve never heard the word before! 😉
Dixie picked up Sit and Lay pretty quickly. We’re working on separation anxiety right now 🙂
The first trick I taught my puppy was sit but the first one she mastered was kisses! She is still working on stay-it’s a work in progress!
I guess our first trick was sit but that’s pretty basic… the first fun one was teaching him to go get his favorite toy! He knows it by name. There are a lot of failed tricks, being shot dead is pretty pathetic and I can’t get anything to balance on his snout!
The first tricks my dogs learned were sit and paw.. my first dog learned from training and when I got my second dog she learned by watching the other dog! They would go crazy over a barkbox!
Our yellow lab, Luna, came to live with us when she was one year old. She was a city dog at the time and was very overweight. Her previous owners taught her to shake and now that she is 9 years old, she can still shake paws like a champ! We have a large yard in the country and she LOVES to lay on the front porch furniture and watch birds or go for walks. She is a snuggle bug just like your Sadie and enjoys being covered with blankets. Last week, we had a small tumor removed from her lower eyelid. She is required to wear a cone for 10 days…only 6 more to go. She has been so depressed it is breaking my heart. She tries to play ball and is having a terrible time maneuvering about with the big cone around her neck. Looks like we need to place an order from BarkBox to cheer her up! Thanks for the great info and discount!
Our pup was quick to learn “sit,” and will try sitting anytime he sees a chance for a treat!
I don’t know if it counts as avtrick, but “sit” was the first command my pup learned. We never attempted “rollover”… So I guess he hasn’t mastered that one!
Kingsley learned shake paw in no time, rolling over however is not our strongest point.
I taught my dog Jessie “sit” first! The trick she could never quite master is “roll over.” I still try that one but she just can’t seem to get it!
1st one was SIT. Still working on roll over. I don’t think its going to happen. Fun giveaway!
Our dogs both know sit and stay really well! Our bulldog will shake, but our boxer mix doesn’t quite have that one down yet. Great giveaway!!
I got my lovable mutt Locksley as a 3 year old who appears to have been previously owned because he came home knowing sit, down, and sit pretty. The first thing he learned from me was probably stay…but the best thing I’ve taught him is to heel living in an urban area it’s so nice not to have him constantly pulling on the leash!
With this warm summer – one trick my 140 lb. German Shepherd hasn’t quite mastered- how to continue walking like a gentlemen. Instead, he prefers to roll on the ground while I’m at his mercy.
My puppy is only 5 months old, so he’s mastered sit….but he doesn’t quite understand down. We’re not even close to getting “down”.
The first trick we taught our dachshund, Cooper, was to sit. He picked up on that pretty quickly and will sit anytime he hears the crinkling of the package his treats come in. He still hasn’t been able to master shake. His legs are kinda short so that might be a factor haha!
My Sadie would love this!!
My pitbull Wrigley is a quick learner for most tricks but we can’t seem to get him to remember his name when we need to leave the dog park! He will pretend he never heard us and keep running!
My husband has been the primary dog trainer of our three dogs and for each, “shake” was the first, and easiest for them to learn. Try as we might, we’ve never been able to get either of the three dogs to master allowing a treat to rest on their nose without moving until told. They just love treats far too much!!
I’m pretty lame, so the first trick I taught my Sadie was to sit 🙂
“Sit” and “stay” were the first (although “stay” has been a bit of an issue.. :\ ). She just can’t seem to master “come” which I think is more of a selective hearing issue when we’re at the dog park and she doesn’t want to leave, since she’s usually good with it at home.
The first trick we taught Paisley, our one and a half year old Weimaraner, was sit. She has since mastered several, my personal favorite is high five!!
The first trick I taught Venus was how to shake! She’s never mastered playing dead. She’s way too energetic, even for being 13 years old! 🙂
The first trick we were able to master was the good old fashioned paw. Still working on the whole leave the treat on the nose thing.
I am sure the first trick I taught my dog was sit, like many people. Bella refuses to roll over. She knows exactly what it means but just refuses to do it. Which, I can’t say I blame her.. I wouldn’t want to just roll around on the ground because somebody demanded it 🙂
I taught her how to do a high 5! 🙂
My dog refuses to sit lol!
My family dog growing up learned how to bring up our newspaper every morning and also dive to the bottom of the pool to retrieve dog toys. My current dogs aren’t nearly as talented :), but can sit/stay/down… the usual!
The first real trick we taught our dog (also named Sadie!) was “take a nap.” She lays down on her side. It’s adorable. I really want her to master “waving good-bye” but she just wants to give you her paw!!
‘Sit’ and ‘High Five’ were the first for our little happy Beagle named Bruno.
We first taught our goldendoodle to sit, and her best trick so far is to play dead!
