Cereal for Dinner

February 2, 2011 by Julie 57 Comments

It happens to the best of us!

Sometimes a big ol’ bowl of cereal makes the perfect dinner.cereal for diner 001I knew my dinner had to come together in a flash tonight because I had plans to meet up with my friend Merri at Starbucks this evening.

When I arrived home and found a package from Pssst with a sample box of gluten-free Honey Nut Chex on our doorstep, I knew cereal for dinner was unavoidable. It was calling to me.  (Quick note about Pssst in case you’re interested… Anyone can sign up for free to provide feedback to General Mills about their products and taste samples!)

As I sorted through the mail and unpacked my lunch bag, I ate several handfuls of this cereal straight from the box. I am a cereal-lover but rarely buy it since I have serious issues with portion control around it. (I’ve eaten an entire box of cereal in one day two times in college. Froot Loops are seriously addicting.) Well, this box of tastiness hit the spot for this cereal-lovin’ girl.

cereal for diner 005Sadie was seriously intrigued…

cereal for diner 007She even licked her chops at the smell of the cereal!

After eating multiple servings straight from the box, I eventually poured some into a bowl to enjoy with milk (no milk in the picture because I didn’t want it to get soggy while I snapped photos).

Alongside the Chex, I also had a bowl of pistachios and a Kashi TLC honey toasted bar that I ate in the car on my way to Starbucks.

At Starbucks I drank a hot cup of Tazo Calm tea because apparently I’m a grandma and thought the calm tea sounded like a perfectly relaxing drink after a long day at work.

Merri arrived about 10 minutes after me and we spent a good two plus hours talking away. Merri is one of those friends who make hours pass like minutes because we have so much to talk about and genuinely enjoy just hanging out together. She’s a gem!

Now that Merri’s gone, I’m wrapping up this blog post at Starbucks before heading home to Ryan and Sadie! Can’t wait to see my favorite duo!

‘Til tomorrow… Open-mouthed smile

When my husband travels, it’s so tempting to eat cereal for dinner! I do on occasion. Especially when I’m not feeling well.

I’m the same way about cereal – I find it hopelessly addicting and can eat it by the handful after handful! Luckily, my sister just turned our box of cereal into puppy chow 🙂

Hey girl! Just want to say I really enjoy you’re positive outlook on life and your writing style. Your blog is a joy to read 🙂

Also, I noticed that pink Boxtop4Education “stamp” at the top corner of your Honey Nut Chex box. Did you know those can be donated to a participating school who can redeem each Boxtop for 10 cents each toward educational tools? I was a first grade teacher and still collect them for the school I taught at…feels good to contribute to the cause!

Have a great night! Thanks again for sharing your life with us.

Isn’t cereal the best? I like the healthy varieties, bur my favorites are the super sugary ones like Lucky Charms and Golden Grahams. Target’s generic label, Market Pantry makes pretty good knockoff versions of both. I grab a box whenever I notice they’re on sale! I have portion control issues with these as well, so I consider them to be treats and buy sparingly. Thanks for the tip on Psst! I’ll have to go and sign up.

i, too, have portion control problems with cereal. i think we’ve even been over this with each other before. 🙂

my favorite thing to do is fill up a baggie with it for a work snack… buuut I tend to fill it up with the intention of having it for a few days.

…we all know how THAT works out.

honey nut chex is one of my favorites without milk, though! I think the milk rids it of a lot of the best flavors.

p.s. are you like I am when it comes to soggy cereal? I have to have my cereal cold and crunchy. every time I pour my milk, it’s like I’m in a mad dash to eat the stuff before it gets soggy and gross!

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who can’t control themselves when it comes to cereal. And it’s not just the sweet cereals that trigger my ravenous appetite – “boring” cereals like Bran Flakes, Grape Nuts or Special K become so additive once I have that first bowlful.

I also have a friend like Merri – whenever we see each other it’s like a race to tell each other everything because we’re so exited to be hanging out. Time always goes to fast with friends like that.

I love having a bowl of cereal for dinner, and I definitely have portion control problems too! I don’t know what it is about cereal, but instead of just finishing the milk at the bottom of the bowl, I will add more cereal. Sometimes when you’re too tired to cook something or on the run, a bowl of cereal is the perfect solution. Thanks for sharing!
