Chowdah

November 1, 2010 by Julie 50 Comments

My all-time favorite soup is clam chowder. I love the thick, creamy texture, the chunks of potato and the chewy clams.

When I saw cans of Campbell’s Select Harvest soup on sale (buy one, get one free!) at the grocery store this evening, I nabbed two cans of the chowdah! clam chowder 092Dinner tonight was a bowl of clam chowder, which I had to keep far away from Sadie.

She was more than intrigued by the smell of the creamy chowder!clam chowder 096After a deliciously salty dinner, I was in the mood for something a little sweet. I impulsively picked up a cup of Publix carrot cake yogurt because I was so intrigued by the flavor.clam chowder 099I typically avoid purchasing sugar-laden yogurts (if I’m going to eat a ton of sugar, I prefer ice cream), but I may make an exception for this little cup in the future. The carrot cake flavor was spot-on and I practically licked the container clean!

Honeymoon Headaches

I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but St. Lucia (aka our honeymoon destination) has been hit by a pretty bad hurricane. 🙁 The storm has caused 12 deaths, serious destruction and has made a key road on the island “unsurpassable.” We’re feeling very thankful that we didn’t head out to the island right after our wedding!

Ryan and I will be calling the resort where we were planning to stay on Friday to see what’s going on tomorrow morning, but right now we’re feeling a little nervous about our travel plans.

Between my serious sickness on Thursday and this latest update, we’re beginning to feel a little defeated. I just want to make it to the island and relax with my husband!

We’re also nervous about our plane tickets. If the island is not conducive to a vacation, are we just out of luck with our airfare? Feel free to throw some travel wisdom my way!

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

AW! I feel so bad to hear about your possible honeymoon woes! I went to St. Lucia for my honeymoon and LOVED it. So gorgeous – I hope you get to experience it without delay! Where are you staying, resort-wise? If a Sandals, I can tell you that they will totally take care of you if you are delayed! We ended up a day late for our honeymoon and they extended our stay by a day to make up for it. Amazing.

I’m so sorry to hear this! I know you were probably (obviously) looking forward to it, and if you aren’t able to go, it would be a bummer. However, the honeymoon is such a trivial thing when you look at marriage as a whole. My husband and I still haven’t taken a honeymoon (married June 2009) because he was in grad school at Johns Hopkins and couldn’t miss any class. Then he went straight into a program at Stanford, so here we are, still looking forward to the day when we’ll be able to take it. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is this: you’re married! To your best friend! And while the money on airfare might be wasted, you have a husband, your health and many other things to be happy about than to worry about a honeymoon!

I’m so sorry Julie, you shouldn’t have to deal with this kind of stress. A lot of my friends were scheduled to go to Mexico for their honeymoon when the swine flu broke out. Their resorts were really helpful in working with them. They got free stays at a resort in St. Thomas. They were also able to switch their plane tickets. It will be okay!

Did you guys book on your own, or through a travel agent? Definitely call the airline now — they’ll typically help you either change your travel dates or even your destination in cases like these. The resort will probably be really helpful, too. If your resort is part of a chain or larger ownership group (which it might be, even if it doesn’t obviously seem that way. Wyndham, for example, owns a bunch of hotel & rental chains you’d never know were Wyndham resorts!), they’ll most likely help you move everything to another resort. It’ll be fine!

(And you guys are married — that’s what’s important. 🙂

I would definitely call the airline after you talk to the hotel to see what your options are. They should be fairly flexible in a situation like this. Hopefully everything will work out and you guys will make it there. Good luck! 🙂

Best of luck with the honeymoon plans! Our honeymoon changed last minute because we were suppose to be in Mexico when the swine flu was so bad there. We changed our flights and our cruise at the last second and it worked out to be better than we planned!! Just get your new hubby to get on the phone and not let anyone say no 🙂

Read your posts backwards so I’m sorry I was a dork on twitter!

    1. Did you guys get travel insurance?
    2. Check with your CC company (if you paid this way) to see if you have any travel protection etc
    3. Call the airline and resort and check the situation and see what they can do and what you need to do
    4. Double check your rights with your airline to know if you can rebook etc

Worst case maybe you will have to delay a bit? But look on the happy side (as hard as it may seem). You both looked wonderful on your big day and you are both safe, happy, and healthy.

I do hope everything works out! We went to Malaysia and Hong Kong on our honeymoon and Mlayasia Airlines randomly canx half of our flights. . .that we HAD TO HAVE to reach our resort a week before we left. Everything worked out in our case and I promise the details will work out for you two too!

    OH no!

If you booked through a travel agent, then you should have some pull to redesignate your plane tix. The airline itself might also give you ‘credit’ for going elsewhere. Be persistent and sweet-talk them as much as possible…it works!

2 days before my hubby and I returned home from our honeymoon in Mexico, the Swine Flu broke..we were afraid we wouldn’t get home!

I would call the airline, your travel agent, etc., as soon as possible to find out what the remedies are for your destination being impassible due to hurricane/extreme weather. Then hopefully you can use the voucher or credit to get another last-minute trip for next week, especially since you both have the time scheduled for off of work – a honeymoon is too important to not make some last-minute arrangements!

Don’t get too upset, things will work out how they are meant to be. 😉 Congratulations on being such a beautiful bride! Best to you and Ryan.

I had a ticket with American Airlines from FL to Utah and ended up not going. I think I called a week or 2 before and told them I would not be going. I can use the ticket still but have to pay $150 when I use it for another trip and I can’t use it during holiday times, like the week of thanksgiving, etc. Even though there are some restrictions, paying $150 is a lot better than a full price ticket.

I’m so sorry about the honeymoon drama! We had some craziness with ours too because I realized 5 days before that my passport had disappeared and we thought we were going to miss out on the whole trip. It was incredibly stressful but everything worked out and it gave us a great story to look back on! We also met lots of couples in Jamaica who had their honeymoons rerouted from Mexico at the last minute because of the swine flu. A last minute location change is not impossible. No matter what happens or where you end up, you’ll enjoy the time off with your new hubby! Good luck!

If the hotel is not available and you can’t go now, you should still be able to change your plane ticket for a “change fee.” While your tickets may not be refundable and it’s never fun to pay those fees, it would still be worth it not to lose the tickets altogether. And who knows, with St Lucia being hit by a hurricane, the airline may even let you change without paying a fee — will depend on the airline.

HI! Congrats on wedding…you looked beautiful!! Regarding honeymoon…my boyfriend and I went to St. Lucia, Sandals, and had a huge rain storm when we arrived and I got so sick on the ride from the airport to the hotel! That was normal rain storm, heavy, but not hurricane! Long ride, lots of turns and hills, flooding, etc….sandals was excellent, but with rain and mud, flooding, not much could be done for that day. If I were you and Ryan, I would try to get back money and go elsewhere or postpone until after storm. GOOD LUCK!

Usually as long as you tell the airline in time (one or two days) you can get credit for your tickets – even without insurance. At least that’s true with Air Canada, although I imagine you aren’t flying with them! 🙂

Hopefully you will be able to sort everything out. You don’t deserve all of this stress. Try to remain positive. You are now officially married to the man of your dreams. 🙂 Good luck, Julie!

I’m sure someone should be able to help you out…the fact that there is a dangerous hurricane should be a special situation in which you should be able to change travel plans if necessary! Julie,

I’m so sorry to hear about the St. Lucia/flight troubles. Unfortunately, I’ve never been out of the country so I am not a travel expert.

My advice would be to call and explain the situation and see if they can’t rebate you. Let them know your plans to travel to another destination (if that’s the case) so they know you will still be doing business with them and maybe that will ease things up?

    Stay strong, lady love!

Don’t feel defeated hun! You and Ryan have a strong relationship and that is what matters.
As for the plane tickets it depends on airline and type of ticket purchased. Some airlines will give you a lower fare if you purchase non-refundable. Call the airline today and find out their policy…if it is a normal ticket most just charge a fee of $50-$100 per ticket.
    Good Luck!!!

If you didn’t buy travel insurance then typically yes you are out of luck! It will depend on the airline but 99% of the time unless you purchase the extra insurance you don’t get it back!

So sorry to hear about the problems with your honeymoon- I can totally relate! My husband and I went to St Lucia this spring on our honeymoon. I was SO READY to de-stress and get away with him, and when we showed up at the airport bright and early, our flight had been cancelled (I was a mess in the airport- people were staring). We had to fly out that afternoon, spend the night in Miami, and arrived in St Lucia the following day. I realize a day delay doesn’t compare to what might be a delay of your entire trip, but I assure you that the resort (we stayed at a Sandals) was really accomodating. We were able to change the dates of our trip so we could still stay a full week and the airline changed our return flight at no extra charge. I hope everything works out for you!

As far as changes to your airline tickets – I have found that worst case you will have one year to use the tickets to the location you’ve booked. If the price increases during that time, you’d have to pay the difference, and recently, you will also have to pay $150 per person as a change fee…. That’s worst case… In light of the hurricane, I would imagine the airline might even refund your money. That’s what happened on 9/11 tragedy…. Ask to talk to a supervisor – Good luck!

    Hi Julie,

Call your airline directly and ask about your flights. I work for an airline in Canada, and if an airport is shut down after a hurricane, then we will refund people’s money. But if the airport is open, we don’t. Every airline has different rules, so you should check with them to be sure.
Good luck and happy thoughts, it will all work out..
