Easy and Healthy Post-Workout Snacks

May 19, 2015 by Julie 597 Comments

As someone who regularly teaches group exercise classes, I end up eating a lot of my post-workout snacks at the gym immediately following a workout. I typically don’t have much time to spare before I need to either grab a quick shower or use some cleansing cloths to get the sweat off my face and return to the gym floor. For me, easy and healthy post-workout snacks are not only preferred for the sake of convenience but also a necessity!

Easy and Healthy Post Workout Snacks

When I’m packing up a snack to enjoy after a sweaty workout, I typically look for something that has a healthy mix of proteins, carbohydrates and fat. When a snack contains all three of these components, I feel way more satisfied than I would if I just snacked on something like an apple without the spoonful of peanut butter that I try to include because I know it will help a ton with satiety (and flavor)!

Easy Post-Workout Snacks

Below you will find a few of my favorite easy post-workout snacks.

  • Trail Mix

Easy Trail Mix Recipe

Gold Emblem Trail Mix

This one is a personal favorite because the combinations you can create are endless! For a trail mix that incorporates whole grains, healthy fats and protein, try mixing together air-popped popcorn, nuts, cacao nibs and unsweetened freeze-dried fruit! It’s salty, sweet and filling, too!

  • Apple or Pear Slices with Peanut Butter

peanut butter and apple slices

While I often use mini Tupperware containers to pack single-portions of nut butter with me, I’ll also throw a whole jar of peanut butter in my bag if I’m in a rush! Slicing an apple or pear up ahead of time (and tossing the slices in lemon juice to prevent browning) to dip into the peanut butter makes this snack a great way to sneak in a serving of fresh fruit right after a workout.

  • Hard Boiled Eggs with Carrot Sticks and Nuts

hard boiled egg snack

Hard boiled eggs are such a great portable protein option. Real food + Delicious taste = Win, win! I love pairing a couple of hard boiled eggs with crunchy carrot sticks and a handful of nuts.

  • Greek Yogurt/Cottage Cheese with Fresh/Freeze-Dried Fruit and Chia Seeds/Nuts

Greek yogurt with freeze dried fruit and walnuts

This one works well for me because I have access to a fridge at my gym, but it’s also a great option for those who head home immediately after a workout and want something fast they can grab out of the fridge or pantry. Pop open a cup of Greek yogurt and top it with fresh or freeze-dried fruit. I absolutely love CVS’ freeze-dried strawberries and apples because they’re naturally sweet and crispy and add a crunchy texture to an otherwise creamy cup of Greek yogurt.

  • Nut Butter Roll Up

Nut Butter and Banana Roll Up

Spread some peanut or almond butter on top of a whole wheat tortilla, add a few pieces of thinly sliced fruit and a sprinkle of cinnamon before rolling it up and digging in! Yum!

This is easy! My fave is similar to your nut butter roll up. Spread nut butter in a line down the center of a tortilla, place full banana on top, drizzle with honey, roll up and eat! A banana burrito if you will 🙂

I love getting new snack ideas! Snacks are something I always get bored with so I need to put more work into planning them. Some of my usual go-to’s are: crackers (not very healthy), nuts, yogurt, and string cheese.

These suggestions look deeeelicious! I love cottage cheese mixed with fresh fruit – grapes or pineapple slices are my favorite! Usually I’ll add a handful or two of whole grain cereal in for some crunch. Another favorite is frozen banana slices with a spoonful of peanut butter. In the summer I turn to my blender a lot to make refreshing smoothies after long runs.

I absolutely LOVE CVS’s Abound label snacks. (The lime & black pepper rice crackers are kind of an addiction…) (And by kind of I mean it’s dangerous for me to go to CVS right now…)

I love having a peanut-butter and banana sandwich after a workout! With a little bit of honey and cinnamon? Maybe other fruits if I have them? On some delicious bread (untoasted!). Oh man, might need to fix myself one of these soon…

I must be a strange one, because after a hard workout I cannot eat right away. BUT I have to eat BEFORE a workout, or I tend to get queasy! I know….I’m weird! I’ve been on a CLIFF bar kick as of recently. Like tonight, I am heading home and going on a hike. I’m a little hungry since my lunch is wearing off, but won’t eat dinner until later tonight. These snack options would be perfect for me to have in my car to snack on before I change out of my work clothes and hit the trails!
Also, the hubbs and I are driving (from Michigan) to Colorado soon, and healthy snacks are a MUST on road trips! Nobody likes feeling crummy in a car for 20+ hours of junk food!
