Holla for Challah

May 24, 2010 by Julie 34 Comments

As a Floridian, I have the wonderful opportunity to go on some pretty inexpensive cruises without stressing about the cost of a plane ticket to get to the cruise port.

Last year, Ryan and I went on a cruise with a group of our friends over Labor Day weekend for around $250 a person. Sweet deal, huh?

Oh Yes it's '80s Night, Oh What a Night!

(Yes, we made formal night on the cruise formal ’80s night. 🙂 )

Blast from the Past

Once aboard a cruise ship, I always head straight for the dining areas to check out the goods.

For those of you who have never been on a cruise, or are unaware how the dining situation works, all of the food is included in the cost of the cruise… which basically makes every meal an all-you-can-eat experience.

Ryan and I definitely take cruising as an excuse to enjoy free soft serve after every meal. 🙂

Soft Serve Fanatics

A Love Affair Begins

On a cruise over spring break my senior year in college, I fell in love with challah bread.

Prior to the cruise I never had the pleasure of trying this eggy bread and couldn’t get over how moist and chewy it was. I made it a point to have a slice at every meal.

I recently discovered that the bakery at my local grocery store sells loaves (and half-loaves) of challah bread. I picked up a half-loaf yesterday and ate about five slices over the course of the evening last night. I seriously love this stuff.

Lunch

Today my lunch featured two slices of the doughy egg bread which I used to make a roasted red pepper hummus sandwich.

Challah + Hummus

On the side I enjoyed a serving of Kraft organic white cheddar macaroni and cheese, Mott’s natural apple sauce and garlic roasted cauliflower.

Kraft Organic White Cheddar Mac & Cheese

Mott's Natural Applesauce

Garlic Roasted Cauliflower

This was one heck of a white meal, huh?

Lunch

The best part of this lunch was the bread.

Question of the Afternoon

What is your favorite kind of bread?

I love bread with lots of nuts and seeds in it, but my favorite has to be challah… Especially challah topped with a sweet glaze! However, if monkey bread counts as bread, that may just be my number one. 😉

I love Millet Bread – it’s gluten free and it’s got a really chewy texture 🙂

    Challah sounds awesome as well!

I agree, if monkey bread counts, that’s my No. 1. I’m guessing it doesn’t. In which case, I have to pick French bread. With cheese, it’s perfect.

Challah bread is so good. I miss celebrating Jewish holidays with my ex just because I miss challah bread…But my favorite bread has to be corn bread with butter. So good any time of the day!

I used to be a bread baker, so I have a bit of an infatuation with the carbolicious goodness. The thing that I love most about the “bread” category, is that there are SO many different levels of complexity, flavor and texture. Whether it be sweet breads (corn, zuch, naner, etc.) or glorious yeast loaves that beg for simple adornments like butter, honey, jam, some cheese perhaps (or straight up, as its pulled from the oven steamy hot). Challahs and brioches are definitely near and dear to my heart-but because they are all so different and unique-my preference changes with my mood; sometimes I need some toasted corn bread, other times Ill opt for crunchy baguette. Ezekial has its place some days, but others nothing satisfies like homemade white bread with skippy pb and j. Oh bread, how i love thee..

My favorite is challah french toast (add orange or lemon zest to the egg and milk mixture). Best. ever. Especially when it’s homemade challah your sister decided to make on a whim.

Oh geez, I don’t know if I could ever pick! I love ALL bread (but I’ve actually never tried the challah bread…somthing to check out now!)
Some favorites are: cinnamon raisin, focaccia, a garlic cheesy bread from a local bakery here, obviously monkey bread if that counts, and I love a nice big hunk of sourdough when I’m eating soup! 😛

Ok, I need to go find some bread now….

I’ve never been on a cruise, but I heard they are fabulous! We’re planning on going on one this winter. My favorite bread is wheat bread, preferrably a wheaty and nut type one. Yum!

Carrot or banana bread would have to be my absolute favorite, but as far as sandwich making bread, any sort of multi-grain will do it for me. 24-hour ice cream on a cruise is definitely the best part!!

Garlic bread, homemade… take a loaf of artesian bread, cut in half the long way and top with Earth Balance, crushed garlic and garlic powder, (because I LOVE garlic,) broil for a few minutes and serve next to pasta with my homemade spaghetti sauce. It’s one of the only meals I can make totally from scratch and it’s amazing, I haven’t made it in months… I may need to fix this 🙂

Hysterical pics. Gawd bless the froyo on a cruise ship. I could eat my weight in frozen yogurt for a week.

I really am partial to all bread/carbs, particularly when the breads come in a puffed muffin form, lol. Fresh bread with baked brie and cheese is the way I roll (get it, bah!).

I love any good hearty bread with seeds and things like that in it – just the kind I would have probably hated as a child! Monkey bread looks interesting, I’ve never seen anything quite like that before!

I live in an area of upstate NY with a lot of Jewish bakeries, so challah bread is very popular around here! 🙂 It’s not my favorite, though. I LOVE all bread, borderline obsessed, so it’s hard to choose. Crusty sourdough with a soft inside is one of my favorites. 🙂

Ahhh…love bread, can’t choose just one favorite. I use challah to make peanut butter and banana stuffed french toast and it is to. die. for! You must make it if you get the chance. Here’s the recipe:

Challah brings me back to my childhood. My family’s Jewish so I was practically raised on the stuff. Until I was about 11 my mom and I used to make it together every Friday afternoon. It is AMAZING stuff. The best part was making French toast out of the leftovers Saturday morning. Challah french toast is actually the best stuff in the world.

I’m not a huge bread person. I more use it as a vehicle for other food to get to my mouth in sandwich, wrap, etc form.

I LOVE cruises. I can’t wait for a couple years from now when the hubs and I go on one for our anniversary.

But I have never tried Challah Bread. If you say it’s wonderful, I definitely will have to give this one a try.
