How Often Do You Wash Your Hair?

August 3, 2011 by Julie 258 Comments

Ryan wanted to sleep in until 7 a.m. this morning, so we skipped our 6 a.m. workout in favor of an extra hour of sleep. We were up at 7 a.m. for breakfast and I worked until around 9:15 a.m. before deciding to go for a run.

I figured a run at 9:15 a.m. was still early enough in the morning to beat the Florida heat.

Wrong.

Oh I was so, so wrong.

By 9:15 a.m. it was already in the mid-80s and the humidity was kickin’.

I headed out for what I thought would be a 5-mile run and quickly realized that wasn’t going to happen. I adjusted my running goals to cover three miles and only finished that by telling myself to slow down and take it easy.

garmin 305 running 001

Running outside when the temperature is close to 90 degrees is definitely not the smartest thing I’ve ever done, but I just wasn’t in the mood to plug away on the cardio equipment in the hotel gym. I wanted to be out and about, but I now know that if I want to take my workout outside, I must do it well before 9 a.m.

Check out this super-sweaty post-run ponytail.

garmin 305 running 005

Okay, fine, so that ponytail is probably about 50 percent sweat and 50 percent straight grease.

Don’t worry, I washed my hair after snapping that picture, I promise.

Speaking of greasy hair, as I’ve grown older, I’ve found myself becoming more and more lax about washing my hair. I shower every day (okay, so I typically skip a shower all together on my rest days), but I don’t wash my hair daily.

In fact, I usually only wash my hair on days when I do super-sweaty cardio or circuit training. This averages out to about three hair-washes a week, or every-other day washes. Sometimes less. Winking smile

In high school I would often wash my hair twice a day. I was a diver, so I’d wash it after diving practice after school and then I’d wake up early in the morning before school to shower and wash my hair again. Talk about overkill.

What about you guys? How often do you wash your hair?

Please don’t make me feel like Pig-Pen and tell me you all wash your hair a million times a week.

Lunch

Lunch today had to be enjoyed in a flash because I worked up until the time I had to leave for an important appointment scheduled for 2 p.m., located about 40 minutes away.

blueberry scone 004

Another Amy’s pocket sandwich!

blueberry scone 006

This time I enjoyed a spinach feta pocket sandwich that was decent, though I could’ve used about five times the amount of feta in my pocket.

I ate my lunch while scrambling to run a brush through my hair and throw some mascara on my eyelashes. My poor little lashes are finding themselves naked more and more now that I work from home.

I’m actually blogging from the location of my afternoon meeting at the moment, but will recap that later this evening.

For now, I’ll give you guys a hint…

Golf carts are everywhere!

Florida folks may have an idea where I am, but those of you with some older relatives may also have a clue.

See ya after dinner!

I am the same way – I only wash my hair about 3x a week! My hair is very long and I have a lot of it, and it’s such a hassle to wash / dry / style it. I love air-drying now that it’s summertime, and like my natural wave that sets in.
I also use dry shampoo religiously – Treseme’s stuff is the best!

I have super greasy hair if I don’t wash it everyday. It sucks because I know how much healthier it is when I can skip a day or two .

I WISH I could get away with not washing my hair everyday 🙁 I’ve got super greasy hair and after 1 day even without working out it looks like a grease slick. Sadly I have to wash it at least once (often twice if I teach classes in the morning and night). I tried not washing it but instead just rinsing it in the shower one day after teaching and when it dried it looked even worse than before. total fail.

Yeah… I wash my hair 2-3 times a week. I’ve actually noticed that when I wash my hair more often it initially gets really dry and then gets all greasy to “overcompensate” for the dryness, weird…

Also, random-ish question, do you do workout DVDs at all? I’m almost done with this dvd program called Chalean Extreme that I’m really liking. It’s made by the same company as P90x and I really like it. I was thinking it may be an option while you’re in your BodyPump transitional period. 🙂

wow! Over 150 comments on this post. Kudos to PBFingers!

I wash my hair about every other day, but will wash on an “off” day if my cardio leaves me super funky greasy. You are not “pig pen” – Charlie Brown reference. I’m a stay at home and putting on makeup is a must, just mascara… Keeps me feeling pretty and keeps me out of the “frumpy housewife” category.

And you my dear were in The Villages. I was up that way last night for Lowes.. Even though I was eyeballing Bed Bath & Beyond and Kohls. 🙁

I wash my hair once, maybe twice a week…but then again I have curly hair and washing it a lot is not good for it. I do shower every day and find that not washing it helps the curls!

I try to wash my hair every other day, but usually it’s more like 3 or 4 times a week. You are NOT PigPen! I shower (pretty much) every day-twice if it’s a major work out day.
But baby powder and a pony tail is usually all you need!

I sweat so much with my dailly workouts that I have to wash my hair daily. However, on my rest days, I don’t wash my hair. And to be quite honest, sometimes when I only do upper body weights, I don’t sweat very much if at all, so I don’t wash it on those days either.

It is weird. I used to love my shower time but now I treat it like it is a hassle. By the end of my super busy day, I’m just so ready to hop in, hop out!

You’re lucky though in that your hair looks great, washed or unwashed.

I wash my hair about twice a week. I don’t have very oily hair and it is curly, so I don’t need to wash more often. I always wash after a swim. They say it is not healthy for your hair to wash it very often.
I wrote about getting too hot the other day. It is insane how your body just won’t go in the heat. It was in the 90’s here in Ontario, Canada and I too needed to get outside for a run. Too hot, shortened it and felt really rough during it.

On the days that you shower but don’t wash your hair, do you rinse it and style it like normal, or do you leave it dry?

I wash my hair whenever I shower, but on my days off/rest days I often times don’t shower, because my boyfriend will drag me out of the house to go run errands or go on some adventure.

My hair is super curly so only 2, maybe 3, times per week. Washing it too much actually creates frizzy, dry hair. I always thought it was the opposite until I started using better products and going to good salons! I will use a dry shampoo made for curls or just shampoo the very front.. I’m also lazy 🙂

Be careful in that heat! When I was living in NC I went on a 3.5 mile run on a hot, humid morning and passed out (and had some other totally tmi side effects). when I got home. It was a fun, sweaty day at the ER. Heat stroke is no joke!

question – do you wet down your hair in the shower on the days you don’t wash or try and keep it dry while showering? I always wondered what other people do after working out if they aren’t on wash day 🙂 If I run I feel like I need to since it’s so sweaty

Holy cow! There are A LOT of comments on this post. Who knew that hair washing would get so much attention. I have crazy curly hair and find it styles better and holds it shape better if its dirty. In the winter I was maybe once a week but sometimes I’ll go longer. I typically wet it down, run some conditioner through it and restyle it. Or sometimes I don’t, depends how I feel that morning.

I have been having trouble with it falling out more than usual lately and I wonder if it is because I wash it every day. It is such a pain. Any suggestions would help?!?!

If I were you, I’d be more concerned about that being a symptom of something being medically wrong. For example, hair loss can be a sign of thyroid problems (alongside a variety of other symptoms) but depending on how bad it is, it may be worth visiting your doc over.

I only wash my hair every other day. It’s actually really not the greatest idea to wash your hair (or your body, for that matter) every day because you’re constantly stripping your hair of its natural oils, which makes it work that much harder to replenish them, thus making your hair greasier than it would be otherwise. Not saying that you should never wash your hair, of course, but it shouldn’t really be washed if it doesn’t need to be. Obviously after I work out (and thus sweat up a storm) I shower off really well, but if I’m not sweating a ton in a day I won’t shower. I haven’t lost any friends over it (at least as far as I know!)

I wash my hair twice a week – MAYBE three times if I use a different product that just messes up the texture. When it starts getting greasy, I just rely on dry shampoo (love the Oscar Blandi spray). My stylist told me one of the other stylists in the salon washes her hair once every two WEEKS sometimes – so don’t feel gross!

Y’all are gonna think this is gross but …

I have very dry, very wavy hair (half black-half jewish … It’s a jewfro!)
I swim every day so my hair gets put in chlorine-infested water in it for 45+ minutes a day
    …
    So
Mmm….I rinse and condition it daily (I pick a dry hair conditioner that smells good and style it with Infusium leave in conditioner and let it air dry…
But only wash it when it needs it …
Last time I used shampoo on it was three + weeks ago… But it looks
good and smells great (according to my hubby)
I don’t even own a blow dryer or curling/flattening iron … And I get it trimmed every
    6weeks …

Yes…disgusting length of time between washes but the pool makes an insane difference!

I wash my hair every day. But the ONLY reason I wash it that often is because I’m cursed with hair that is both naturally curly and very fine. So the only styling products I’ve found that fight frizz and make my curls look their best also make my fine hair look greasy and gross after 24 hours 🙁 Thankfully, my hair is not super dry like most naturally curly hair so it can take daily washing.

I SHOULD wash my hair daily because it gets greasy otherwise, but sometimes I skip a day or two. This week it’s been sucky because I’m incredibly sunburned and so showering hurts… so this morning (er, yesterday morning I guess) there was no shower. I don’t think I’ve shampooed since…Monday or Tuesday? Ohwait, that was conditioner. Lol. So my hair probably hasn’t had a good washing since Sunday. It’s gotten wet since then, just not exactly washed…

Please don’t be grossed out, but I wash my hair once a week..I used to wash it much more, but my mom always taught me that the oftener I wash my hair, the faster it will get greasy, because it’d get used to being washed everyday. So I’ve kinda “trained” my hair to stay not greasy for longer…I know, I know, sounds gross, but it seriously works for me.
