Pastrami on Rye

March 22, 2011 by Julie 76 Comments

This past weekend when I was out and about, I found myself behind a TooJay’s Gourmet Deli truck. On the back of the truck was this slogan: “Caution: I brake for pastrami on rye.”

HALT! Pastrami on Rye!

Apparently this grassroots marketing worked on me, because ever since then, I’ve wanted a pastrami sandwich. Unfortunately for TooJay’s, I made my own and didn’t purchase one from their delicious deli (though if there was a TooJay’s within walking distance of my office, I likely would have).

I made my pastrami on rye using pastrami deli meat, stone ground mustard, romaine lettuce and an Arnold rye sandwich thin!

Tuesday Lunch

I was pretty darn excited when I saw that Arnold sandwich thins were on sale at Publix this weekend, and when I found rye sandwich thins I was all the more excited! I didn’t know that they even made rye sandwich thins. Score!

Along with my pastrami sandwich, I also enjoyed roasted curried cauliflower and carrots that I prepped last night when I was baking the fish for our fish tacos. Multitasking at its finest!

Questions of the Afternoon

  • What is the best sandwich you’ve ever had from a restaurant?
  • What is your favorite homemade sandwich?

From a restaurant, my favorite sandwich is the French dip sandwich from Houston’s (now Hillstone) in Winter Park, Florida. Hands-down the best sandwich I’ve ever had.

When it comes to homemade sandwiches, I gravitate toward roast beef with cheese, tuna salad or peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Oh and my breakfast bagelwiches, of course. 😉

P.S. The Fashion page was updated this afternoon!

P.P.S. If you’re interested in more blogging tips, definitely read the comments on yesterday’s lunchtime post. You guys are so wise and I definitely picked up a thing or two from the advice that was shared. Thank you for weighing in!

Does a wrap count? My favorite is a spinach and mozzarella wrap, grilled, and dipped in marinara sauce. YUMMY!!!

And I’ve never had pastrami on rye… it always sounded so nasty to me… sorry :-/

I can rarely get sandwiches when I’m out because not many places have GF bread. But I love portabello mushroom sandwiches – so good!

Gosh that is such a hard question. I can’t think of my favorite. I really like the tomato mozzarella sandwich at Panera but I know that can’t be my favorite.

This might seem silly, but how do you roast your vegetables like that? They look delicious.

My favorite sandwich is a WW panini at Whole Foods w/ mozarella and roasted red pepper – pesto on both sides of the bread! Hits the spot.

I had an amazing chicken salad wrap from D’Angelo’s once. It had cranberry and walnuts in it. Probably my favorite blend. It’s seasonal though and I’ll have to try and healthify it at home!

I also had a good turkey, bacon and mango salsa wrap at a deli in Marblehead, MA.

I haven’t found the “perfect” sandwich from a restaurant yet, but I do like the ones that I create at home! I love bbq chicken deli meat on [doughy] whole wheat bread from Trader Joes, with swiss cheese, sprouts, lettuce, pickles, and horseradish mustard. It’s even better when it is all warm and toasted in a toaster oven!

Ryan and I just had a debate over what kind of meat Pastrimi is. I say it’s like salami (sp?), and Ryan thinks it’s cow or pig. Do you know?! I don’t eat much meat… so i honestly have no idea in the world.

This might be totally random, but I’m wondering what Ryan eats for lunch during the week? I like to shake things up like you and have variety but my boyfriend brings the same thing everyday, a wrap with turkey and cheese. Is Ryan the same way or does he mix it up like you?

I have never been to a place that makes sandwiches that don’t have meat in them. So I haven’t ever gotten a sandwich at a restaurant. Now that I’m gluten-free I’m really going to have trouble finding a good one!

THANK YOU so much for introducing me to the bombastic breakfast bagelwhich! Yesterday I mixed up some cinnamon and all spice in my eggwhite to be risque and it was GREAT! I melted provolone on it and spread Svanso (Danish) Raspberry jam on the bread. SO good!

I was gonna do a repeat this morning, but I ran out of provolone!! Good thing I was SAVED by an ounce of goat cheese I had in the fridge. Oh the possibilities … this raisin thin and egg have brought the mad scientist out of me!!

All time best sandwich ever was the pastrami on rye at Katz’s Deli in NYC. The most memorable part from my trip to the city. (seriously that good)
