Pastrami on Rye

March 22, 2011 by Julie 76 Comments

This past weekend when I was out and about, I found myself behind a TooJay’s Gourmet Deli truck. On the back of the truck was this slogan: “Caution: I brake for pastrami on rye.”

HALT! Pastrami on Rye!

Apparently this grassroots marketing worked on me, because ever since then, I’ve wanted a pastrami sandwich. Unfortunately for TooJay’s, I made my own and didn’t purchase one from their delicious deli (though if there was a TooJay’s within walking distance of my office, I likely would have).

I made my pastrami on rye using pastrami deli meat, stone ground mustard, romaine lettuce and an Arnold rye sandwich thin!

Tuesday Lunch

I was pretty darn excited when I saw that Arnold sandwich thins were on sale at Publix this weekend, and when I found rye sandwich thins I was all the more excited! I didn’t know that they even made rye sandwich thins. Score!

Pastrami on Rye

Along with my pastrami sandwich, I also enjoyed roasted curried cauliflower and carrots that I prepped last night when I was baking the fish for our fish tacos. Multitasking at its finest!

Roasted Curried Cauliflower and Carrots

Back to work for the rest of the day…

Questions of the Afternoon

  • What is the best sandwich you’ve ever had from a restaurant?
  • What is your favorite homemade sandwich?

From a restaurant, my favorite sandwich is the French dip sandwich from Houston’s (now Hillstone) in Winter Park, Florida. Hands-down the best sandwich I’ve ever had.

When it comes to homemade sandwiches, I gravitate toward roast beef with cheese, tuna salad or peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Oh and my breakfast bagelwiches, of course. 😉

P.S. The Fashion page was updated this afternoon!

P.P.S. If you’re interested in more blogging tips, definitely read the comments on yesterday’s lunchtime post. You guys are so wise and I definitely picked up a thing or two from the advice that was shared. Thank you for weighing in!

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

My favorite sandwich is the Larkspur from Isaac’s Restaurant & Deli in York, PA. Muenster and cheddar cheeses, fresh tomatoes, spinach and sprouts, wrapped in a grilled flatbread with ranch dressing. I have dreams about it. I try to recreate it at home but it never tastes the same!

So tough to say, but I think my favorite sandwich from a restaurant is a good BLT on white, with American cheese and mayo. So bad for you but I don’t get them often, so I LOVE them when I do! Close runner up is the Super Turkey bagelwich from a place in my college town: turkey, honey mustard aioli, sprouts, lettuce and tomato on an open-faced bagel. Y-U-M.

Favorite from home: it’s a tough call, but I am obsessed with my Foreman as a panini maker, so it’s either a fresh mozzarella-roma tomato-fresh basil on sourdough OR a smoked gouda-roasted red pepper on sourdough, both grilled on the Foreman until the cheese melts!

The best sandwich I’ve ever had in a restaurant was so good that I dedicated part of a post to it. It was filled with miso-marinated tempeh, portobello mushrooms, spinach, and garlic aioli. The bread was organic light rye, lightly brushed with coconut oil and toasted. (http://eatspinrunrepeat.wordpress.com/2010/12/30/thrive-juice-bar-and-my-top-5-meals-of-2010/). I’m not vegan, but this seriously was one of the best meals I’ve ever had!

Healthier(?) sandwich: The Hummer from Hopkins. It is on rye pumpernickle bread and has hummus, feta cheese, italian dressing, mayo, turkey, olive, onion, lettuce and tomato. It’s deeeelish.
    Not-so-healthy: Philly cheesesteak. hands down.
Homemade: Salami and any kind of cheese, or peanut butter and banana.

The Caprese sandwich ( fresh buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil, tomatoes with added pesto and italian salami, which i used to order but now order all veggie served a fresh baguette that is served crispy on the outside and freshly soft and chewy on the inside) from BAY CITIES in Santa Monica. It is a little italian grocer and deli, a very local spot. This place is the best if your ever in Santa Monica you have to visit and order the ‘godfather’.

    Rye bread is the best!

The best sandwich ever though was from the dining hall at Boston College called a “New England Classic”. It is turkey and cheddar cheese, granny smith apple slices, and honey mustard on cranberry bread and grilled on the panini press. Even though I graduated almost 3 years ago (eeek!!) I still crave this sandwich. Plus, they made their own chips there which were soooo good.

At home though, I’ve been really into tuna fish made with avocado and hummus instead of mayo! It’s super good.
