Preserving Memories with Legacybox (+ a Giveaway!)

January 12, 2016 by Julie 171 Comments

When you become new parents, people inevitably give you tons and tons of advice. Some of it is incredibly valuable and words of wisdom you take with a grain of salt. One piece of advice we received from a bunch of people was to take plenty of videos of Chase.

They told us his first year will pass by in a flash (if the first five months of his life are any indication, this could not be more true) and before you know it, we would have a hard time remembering what his adorable early morning squeaks and coos sound like.

I’m trying my best to stay on top of videoing our baby boy but I already feel like I’ve missed some moments I wish I would’ve captured! I’m beginning to realize that as a mom it’s impossible to take too many pictures or videos of your baby.

I feel lucky that taking short videos of our baby these days is so simple. Since my phone is typically close by at all times, capturing a quick video on my iPhone is a breeze and Ryan and I already have way too much fun looking back over the videos of Chase when he was a newborn and seeing how much he has changed.

My mom was always pretty good about taking videos of our family as my sister and I grew up, but unlike videos today, all of her videos are stored on VHS tapes that take up a ton of space. And guess what? We never watch them because I’m pretty sure no one in my family has had a VHS player for years.

Enter Legacybox!

Legacybox Review

Legacybox is a service that digitally preserves old videos and photos. They can take any format (tapes, film, photos, audio cassettes) and transform them into archival DVDs or optional thumb drives and a fancy schmancy Legacybox for storage.

Legacy box Review

And the process could not be any easier!

Here’s how it works:

  • Purchase a Legacybox and once it arrives in the mail, fill it with your memories. Tapes, photos, etc. Whatever you have, they can make it work!

Legacybox Kit

  • Place the provided barcode stickers on your tapes or onto the outside of a bag if you are sending in photos.

Legacybox Labeling

VHS Tapes for Legacybox

  • When your box is ready, you can simply hand it to your mailman or take it to the post office. Every Legacybox kit comes with a pre-paid shipping label.
  • In a few weeks, your memories will arrive at your doorstep on DVDs or optional thumb drives.

Legacybox Review

Legacybox - Transfer VHS to DVD

(You also receive all of the originals back, just in case you wish to keep them as well.)

I initially wanted to surprise my parents with DVDs of our home movies, but locating their family videos required me actually asking them for their tapes. Even if the end result wasn’t a surprise, I think my parents were still thrilled with the result! The quality was fantastic and all of the DVDs came labeled according to the labeling on the VHS tapes we sent in.

Legacybox DVDs

My mom said she’s planning on utilizing Legacybox to transfer the remainder of her VHS collection to more storage and viewing-friendly DVDs and I’d love to send in some of the old photos I have from when Ryan and I first started dating that were all taken on disposable cameras.

Even though the holidays are over, I think digitizing old photos or videos would be such a wonderful Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gift, especially for the “hard to buy for” folks out there!

Legacybox Discount and Giveaway

And now here is your chance to try Legacybox for yourself!

The first 50 PBF readers to order their own Legacybox will receive 40 percent off. Simply click here to get started.

Also, one lucky reader will win a $200 credit toward their Legacybox order. To enter this giveaway, please click here to join the Legacybox mailing list (don’t worry, they won’t be annoying!) and then leave a comment on this blog post to let me know what memories you would love to have Legacybox preserve for you! Do you have some old VHS tapes you’d like converted to DVDs? Is there a stash of old photos in your house you’d love to have digitized? Please let me know!

I will randomly select a winner on Friday.

Good luck!

My parents recently got their VHS converted to DVD, and got a surprise when someone else’s trip footage was actually on the DVDs. Looks like this bar code system would prevent an annoying mix up like that.

My mother recently gave me a Christmas gift of my old VHS tapes converted to DVDs. My fiance and I have been really enjoying looking back on my memories and moments as a baby and young child! But now we need to get his converted so we can compare the two different children we see on screen. I was a golden child and he was a terror…hahaha. But we need to see his videos to really compare! That’s what I would use the LegacyBox for.

My parents lost their second child when he was 3 days old and the only keepsakes they have of him are one photo and his birth/first few days on a VHS tape. Since VCRs are a thing of the past, they can no longer watch the only video they have of their only baby boy. I’d LOVE to get the VHS converted to a DVD for them to be able to watch the only memories they have of their son’s life!

My father in law has early on-set dementia. My daughter is his only grandchild and he adores her; she adores him as well. I would love to preserve the memories he’s made before she was born to show her when she’s older – as well as the ones they are creating together now.

On an off topic note – have you heard of Tinybeans? Best recommendation for keeping up with photos and videos of your little one on a daily basis I have ever heard. And it’s free. 🙂

Wow! What a great concept! I would love to get all our old family VHS tapes of vacations, recitals, and birthdays digitized! You’re so right–we have a collection of VHS tapes just chillin’ in the entertainment center, which we carry with us from move to move, yet we don’t even have a VHS player anymore to play the tapes if we wanted to! Digitizing the memories, especially in such a convenient way, would be the ultimate solution!
