Ridin’ Solo

August 11, 2011 by Julie 201 Comments

Today Ryan had plans to golf with some coworkers after work.

So what did I do to entertain myself since I have no friends in Ocala yet and didn’t feel like bumming around in the hotel room?

Well, first I ate dinner at the hotel buffet. Kind of. I picked at the dinner before throwing in the towel and making myself a peanut butter and jelly bagelwich back in the room. And then the fun began!

I took my boo-tay to Barnes & Nobel to pick out a new book! (I finished The Glass Castle yesterday. Review to come!)

2011-08-11_17-38-49_252

I selected this book based on your recommendations and reviews I read. Hopefully it’s a winner.

Two things before we move on to my next solo activity of the night:

  • I need an Ocala address so I can get a library card. I’ve spent $45 on books since we’ve been here! $15 a book x 3 adds up!
  • Would you guys have any interest in a PBF book club? I could pick a book (using your recommendations) and announce it on the blog. Then, a month or so later, I would review it and ask questions that we could all discuss in the comments section of the post? Yay? Nay?

Moving right along to my next activity…

I took myself on a fro yo date!

kite runner 002

Mochi was crowded, but not unbearable this evening, so I waited patiently and got myself a cup of chocolate, cake batter and carrot cake frozen yogurt, topped with Heath bar and Butterfinger bits, Oreos and Cap’n Crunch cereal.

Someone please tell me why so many fro yo places don’t have whipped cream as a topping option? Why? I just don’t understand.

Random fun fact: My dad calls whipped cream out of the can “vitamins.” Whenever we have ice cream sundaes at home he always asks us if we’d like them topped with some “vitamins.”

Speaking of vitamins, I am seriously addicted to Adora chocolate calcium disks. Yesterday I ate eight over the course of the day. Eight. That can’t be good.

Off to look up the dangers of consuming too much calcium…

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I bet there’s no whipped cream because it doesn’t hardly weigh anything and those places charge by the ounce! Just a thought! 😉

Kite Runner is AWESOME! You will love it. I like A Thousand Splendid Suns less but it was still good, too 🙂 Enjoy!

Are you a Barnes & Noble member? It can save you quite a bit of moolah- and I usually wait for a coupon to come by email and then buy my books online from them instead of in the store- for instance, I just got Mama Pea’s cookbook for 1/2 off!

I would LOVE to be in a book club. Always wanted to be in a “live” one, but a “virtual” one would be just as good right now, seeing as I have just moved and don’t know a SOUL here! Thanks

I own the Kite Runner but have been avoiding it since reading A Thousand Splendid Suns several YEARS ago! It was an excellently written book, but I had several sleepless nights because there is so much turmoil in the book, I would keep reading trying to get to a “feel good” part of the story and then it would never come!

Also, too much calcium can cause kidney stones. But, I think that happens with people that get too much calcium and don’t drink enough water. Gotta keep those kidneys flushed out! Also, calcium needs magnesium to be the most effective and prevent build up, so if you are worried about getting enough calcium (or worried about too much) make sure you are getting enough magnesium as well. Balance is key!

Julie, if you don’t want to spend money on books, and want to get rid of the books you have you should use swap.com! I did a post on it yesterday because it is my newest obsession! I’m swapping my old summer reading books from highschool for books I want to read now. So far I’ve swapped my old books for the Hunger Games trilogy and some awesome Jodi Picoult books, all you pay for is shipping! I highly recommend it for a way to get more bang for the buck you spent on some of your books!

Love the book club idea. Yeah!

I totally agree with the whole whipped cream thing at yogurt places. I love all the topping options they give you, but sometimes a squirt of “vitamins” on top is what you need to make it absolutely perfect.

By the way, that cake batter fro yo sounds fantastic. I’ve never found a place around me that has it. I usually get the Nutter Butter flavor or chocolate milkshake.

The Kite Runner is one of my favorite books ever. And so was his other novel A Thousand Splendid Suns. I enjoyed The Glass Castle as well, I am kind of a memoir junky!
Your frozen yogurt choices sound great. There is a new yogurt place in my town, my fiance and I finally tried it after walking by for weeks before it opened. Jeff is kind of purist and sticks with one flavor and maybe 2 toppings. I had 3 flavors and tons of toppings.

The Kite Runner is a great book, so it that author’s other book “A Thousand Splendid Suns” (which is told more about females in that area).

I was actually going to ask whether or not you ever used a library. That’s where I get 99% of my books and since I know you read a lot it really is a great option. Glad you’re going to look into it and it supports libraries! 🙂

If you are interested in saving money on books… another great alternative is to get a Kindle. It saves time because you don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home to get a new book (just download) and it saves money because the books cost about half of what they do at a store. I got one for Christmas and love it.

Hi, wanted to recommend a great book I just read! Save the Date by Jenny B. Jones. It was an easy read, empowering for women and had a Christian tone to it. Highly recommend!

[…] Julie read this book also.  I was hesitant to read it last night because when I started it this weekend, I came to a point in the plot where I despised the main character.  The story is about two little boys in Afghanistan who are best friends; however, the main character (Amir) is a Pashtun –the “well-to-do” and his best friend (Hassan) is a Hazara—the lower class/Amir’s servant.  Hassan is such a loyal and dedicated friend, but Amir is selfish and self-centered.  There comes a part early on in the book where Hassan desperately needs his friend’s help and Amir does not come to his rescue.  This is made even more appalling due to the fact that Hassan has proven his friendship to Amir up to this point and it is very evident he would do anything to protect Amir.  I shut the book and hadn’t touched it again until yesterday.  I decided to give it another chance…and now I am almost finished!  I will give a complete review once I am done with it.
