The Bubble Room

November 10, 2010 by Julie 47 Comments

Those of you who recognized the location of the last picture in my previous post already know where Ryan and I spent the night last night on the second part of our honeymoon adventure.

Sanibel and Captiva Island!

The 5.5 hour drive from the Keys put us in Captiva around 5:45 p.m. yesterday… just in time for a gorgeous sunset.

honeymoon 047Beach sunsets never get old. Beach sunsets framed by sea oats are especially breathtaking.

After a beautiful welcome from the setting sun, Ryan and I checked into South Seas Island Resort, an expansive vacation property that includes restaurants, a marina, pools, beachfront properties, shops and more.

Though we only spent one night at South Seas, Ryan and I both agreed we could’ve easily spent a week there taking advantage of all of the offerings.

The room we stayed in had a gorgeous view of the marina.

honeymoon 050 honeymoon 051Ryan and I keep our yacht docked at this marina, so it was nice to pay it a little visit. Totally kidding. 😀 Maybe one day… 😉

I already have a yacht name picked out: The USS Julie… or perhaps the USS Chunky Peanut Butter?

Maybe not. I’ll keep brainstorming.honeymoon 049

We quickly dug into our suitcases for suitable dinner attire and headed out to get some grub.

My family used to come to Sanibel Island frequently when I was much younger and a couple of places stuck out in my memory. One place I remembered as the place to go for fantastic desserts was The Bubble Room.

honeymoon 053honeymoon 054Somehow in all my years away from Sanibel and Captiva, I forgot exactly what The Bubble Room looked like inside.

The place is straight out of a child’s fantasy…honeymoon 069  Or a clown-haters nightmare.honeymoon 058 The restaurant is comprised of three floors. Every single floor is decked out with Christmas lights, trinkets, collectibles and bobbles… or as my dad would say “knick knacks.”

It’s quite a place!

Ryan and I enjoyed dinner from a train car.honeymoon 060Our meal began with a basket of bubble bread and sticky buns.honeymoon 056I wish you guys could try a piece of the bubble bread from the above picture. It was unreal. Apparently six kinds of cheeses are used to create the creamy, cheesy, salty, delicious topping.

Unfortunately The Bubble Room will not reveal what cheeses are used or I would make it my personal mission to recreate it and provide a recipe for you guys.

For my entree, I opted for a soup and salad combo that included a Greek salad and French onion soup.honeymoon 055 honeymoon 062The French onion soup was topped with an inordinate amount of cheese which made it a winner in my book.

And now for the part of meal I was waiting for all along… Dessert!

honeymoon 065Our waiter brought us a platter filled with a variety of cakes which had us drooling in no time.

Though every cake on the platter looked fantastic, we opted for a slice of the ice cream pie that our waiter assured us was wonderful, but was not featured on the display for obvious reasons.

Aside from my dad, Ryan is the only other person in the world that I know who loves ice cream as much as I do, so we were both sold on the mystery ice cream pie, sight unseen.

Fortunately our gut feeling about the pie didn’t steer us wrong.

Check out this bad boy:honeymoon 066  That pie is what dreams are made of. honeymoon 067I think we may have set a record for how fast we demolished our dessert.

After dinner we headed back to our room where we were greeted with a nice surprise from South Seas.

honeymoon 071 Champagne!

What a perfect way to end the evening. 😀

Today

I am actually blogging from the car as Ryan and I head to Sarasota to spend some time with his mom before heading to St. Pete to spend the night at my parents’ house. We’re leaving on a cruise in the morning for the third (and final) part of our honeymoon!

I’ll try to get a post up before we set sail to fill ya in on our day of fun in Captiva and Sanibel today.

I hope this honeymoon never ends…
