The Veggie That Haunts Your Dreams

July 26, 2010 by Julie 73 Comments

Stereotypically speaking, most kids have a vegetable (or 12) that they absolutely hate and refuse to eat. Growing up the veggies that haunted my dreams were broccoli and asparagus.

A popular nightmare-inducing veggie is Brussels sprouts, but those lil’ babies make this girl smile! 🙂

(Yes, I am well aware that my jeans are way too long. I promise they actually fit when I wear them with my 4-inch wedges, which I promptly took off when I walked in the door. Veggie chopping is a no-heels-allowed sport, after all.)

Tonight’s dinner would probably make any 8-year-old cry for pizza, but it made me and Ryan happy!

We enjoyed broiled sockeye salmon, seasoned with lemon, basil, thyme and sea salt, along with basil fettuccine and Brussels sprouts.

To prepare the Brussels sprouts, I tossed them in olive oil before seasoning them with Mrs. Dash original blend of salt-free spices.

This was a home-run dinner!

Alright, kiddos, I’m outta here for the night to watch The Bachelorette!

Question of the Night

When you were a kid, was there a vegetable that you absolutely hated? Did you ever grow out of it?

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I can’t remember any veggies that I hated, but I think it’s because I helped my Dad garden, and we made salsa and all kinds of neato dishes out of our harvest 😀 I definitely adore brussel sprouts too!

Dinner looks so simple yet delicious! Salmon is awesome!

    Enjoy your night!

I was kind of grossed out by them for a long time but I recently tried them and fell in love. They might be my new favorite veggie.

I hated lima beans and still do. I like of other types of bean but really hate lima beans.

I have a really good brussel sprout recipe that has garlic and apple cidar vinegar in it – it’s the only way I’ll eat brussel sprouts.

I’m actually not a fan of a single veggie. I eat them because I know they are good for me but I can’t stand them. Corn is the only vegetable I’ll eat because I like it. I can’t seem to change my little tasebuds, after all these years of eating veggies I still haven’t started to like them.

I went through a phase of not liking regular/white potatoes. (My mom wasn’t too happy since we were a huge meat and potatoes kind of family.) However, these days there’s only a handful of ways I like them prepared.

I am also using salmon in our dinner–Salmon Chowder.

i really don’t like uncooked onions.

I hated broccoli and cooked spinach. I still can’t stand either of them, I will eat raw spinach in salads or green monsters but I despise it cooked… and broccoli, cooked, raw, whatever, makes me gag. Yes I am 26 years old and I will gag on broccoli 🙂 But, when I was little, (and still to this day,) I loved the veggies that most people don’t like, such as asparagus, eggplant, artichokes, and tomatoes. LOVED them.

I used to hate uncooked bell peppers and finally last year I was chopping one for another dish, and decided to scoop up a blob of hummus with a raw piece and try it. Delicious! I find it strange that peppers bothered me so much when I would happily eat asparagus, broccoli, brussel sprouts or any other veggies that aren’t usually kid friendly.

I actually made brussel sprouts for the first time last Friday. I did not know what to do so I just roasted them with olive oil, salt and pepper. I’m not sure what they are supposed to taste like but mine tasted fishy and I don’t think thats normal. I may try them again with different spices but so far this is the only veggie I am not a fan of.

Ah! When I was younger my mother was living with a boyfriend who was in charge of making dinner every night. Whenever he was mad at my brother and I he would cook fish and steamed brussels sprouts (2 things my brother and I hated). That’s exactly what this meal reminded me of.
But now, I absolutely lovelovelove brussels sprouts (roasted, not steamed). Funny how things change.
