A Day to Unpack

August 29, 2011 by Julie 97 Comments

Ever since I quit my full-time job to pursue blogging and freelance writing, I’ve been very good about working full days. To be quite honest, I’ve worked far more than 8 hours a day many, many times, but I’m doing something I love, so it often doesn’t feel like work. Well, the techy side of blogging, correspondence and many freelance assignments feel like work, but it’s all in the name of the game.

Today, however, I gave myself a day off from everything except my daily blog posts.

If you worked from home, could you work with billions of boxes surrounding you?

IMG_5804-1

I felt like the boxes in our house were screaming “unpack meeee!”

I’m pretty sure Sadie was saying the same thing.

chuck it

Locate her Chuck-It, I did. Once I uncovered the Chuck-It, I played with Sadie in our new ginormous backyard for about 20 minutes. I must say it is awfully nice to be able to throw a ball for Sadie in my own backyard without having to drive a good five to 10 minutes to a dog park.

Ten points for Ocala! Smile

Though I did want to spend time unpacking, I also gave myself the day off because our internet is not working just yet. I find it quite humorous that I am publishing this blog post in a Burger King parking lot. They have free wi-fi! Who knew!?

Unpacking

I feel really good about the progress I made on the unpacking front this morning…

IMG_5802-1

(Hooray for no more heinous anus cabinets!)

IMG_5801-1

I’m kind of obsessed with the Ball jars in the above picture. My mom and I bought them a couple of weeks ago when I filled a few with granola to send to some fundraiser winners. I used the remaining jars to store grains, lentils and some veggie soup mix. I think they add a little pizazz to our kitchen!

Lunch

After unpacking 10 boxes of stuff (yes, I counted), I took a break for lunch.

IMG_5795-1

I made myself a chopped salad with tomatoes, sweet corn, romaine lettuce, carrots and rotisserie chicken leftover from yesterday’s floor picnic.

IMG_5794-1

Topped with some kind of Newman’s Own dressing… I think a ginger/Asian flavor? Like I said, I’m in the Burger King parking lot, so I can’t double check, but trust me when I say it was delicious.

Someone was quite intrigued by the smell of chicken.

IMG_5800-1

You know I gave her some scraps. I’m such a sucker.

And now I gotta hurry home. The internet guy is due at our place between 3 and 5 p.m. and I don’t want to miss him!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

Was it the Sesame Ginger flavor? That’s my favorite dressing ever! So good.

I have to ask you about the plates you use. Are they Fiesta? I only have Fiesta dishes in my cabinet and yours look so much like the ones I have.

Since I do work from home, I’ve moved my “office” many times. we had an extra room for my office but it quickly became a guest bedroom and storage. It was however too small, got too hot or too cold so I moved in the living room and now have just a desk looking out the window. During the summer I work outside, but on my to do list of things for this year, I think I’m going to rent space outside the house to work. I’m too distracted by yummy recipes ideas and working out when I’m at home! Good luck on the furniture!

It’s so exciting watching you get all moved in! My husband and I just found a house this weekend that we want to rent and will (hopefully!) be moving into in two weeks! We’ve only ever been in an apartment (only married 1.5 years) and he has been so giddy happy over feeling like we will be in more of a “home,” than an apartment can offer. Yay to new chapters!!

We attended a beautiful wedding on the weekend and each guest received a jar which was filled with all the ingredients to make a batch of chocolate chip cookies. It was all layered in the jar and the jar lid was covered with fabrice and tied with ribbon that said “Mr. and Mrs.” On the top of the lid was your name and your table number. So many great ideas for those jars.

Oh my gosh, unpacking is ALMOST as bad as packing!

Burger King always makes me think of that super creepy life-sized King character in the BK commercials haha.

Ugh, the joys of unpacking. My advice….take your time. I never can seem to do this but I think it’s much more effective and productive if you space it out.

I had this fantastic idea to buy a Mason/Ball jar for each of our wedding guests, and to serve our signature drink in them (mint juleps)…bought the jars, halfway through the wedding I realize “Oh wow. I forgot to buy the liquor for the drinks…” lol. My mother went home with 75 jars that night…

Yay! Getting settled in ….. !

This post was really great. Gonna try that pb oatmeal soon.

Julie ….. this house is just gorgeous! I was so hoping you had selected it. Most likely I gave my opinion in a previous comment. Well …. it’s a lovely place.

Very glad you & Ryan could move in earlier. A relief. Your lives will be much easier. That marvelous pool is amazing! The entire patio looks so calming and peaceful. What fun your (entire) family will have with it!

“Things” will be spoofed-up in no-time. You already posted various furniture choices. Right? Go for comfort! Can’t wait to see how everything turns out Julie!!

Love-love your posts! Ditto for Sadie! I have a Sophie and a Gidget. Some days Gidget is our Boo-Boo …… other days she is GiGi! Ha.

Keep us in the know!! For sure, you have tons of fans Julie!

    Hi
I’ve been following you for over a year, your blog inspires me! I find it very enjoyable to read. I wanted to know though how you got into the work your doing. I am not very happy in my job and my passion is entertainment and writing about it, photography ect. I haven’t had the guts to actually write anything yet though. I would love to be able to write/blog/photograph during the day as my job. Do you have any suggestions?
