SantaCon

December 16, 2013 by Julie 50 Comments

On Saturday morning, our group of 15 awoke ready to party it up! We were a little too excited for SantaCon to begin!!!

Our trip to New York City centered around the celebration of my friend Leah’s 30th birthday. Since Leah’s birthday is December 5, combining her birthday celebration with SantaCon, a "nonsensical Santa Claus convention that happens for absolutely no reason," made perfect sense and gave all of us a fabulous excuse to dress up like goofballs and have a good time!

SantaCon 2013

To quote my friend Laurel, "SantaCon is proof that no one ever really wants to grow up" and we’re all just big kids inside. Yes! Stay young at heart, my friends.

Though I’ve heard about SantaCon from Merri before, I don’t think anything could’ve prepared me for the ridiculously fabulous holiday mayhem that surrounds this festive event. It was a blast and I’d love to go again!

Our day began at 10:30 a.m. when everyone met up at Sotto 13 for a boozy birthday brunch.

29ish Birthday
Leah is officially 29ish!

We gave Leah a scrapbook of sorts and spent two hours eating French toast, eggs and fritattas while we sipped on screwdrivers, bloody Marys and holiday sangria until it was time to head out and change into our SantaCon outfits.

SantaCon koozie
It was onesie time!

Everyone put on their holiday finest and our group had several Santas, a couple of elves, a Christmas tree, a handful of people dressed like Christmas morning (hence the onesies) and we even had Ralphie in his pink bunny pajamas from A Christmas Story.

We headed out at 1 p.m. and were blown away by just how many people we saw dressed up and wandering around the streets of New York City. It was so fabulous!!!

Everyone we ran into was very jolly and I loved checking out the various costumes. We saw penguins, abominable snowmen, Buddy the Elf, gingerbread men, plenty of Santas and Mrs. Clauses, Rudolph and more.

As we walked to the bar, we kept commenting on the snow. I don’t think it stopped snowing for even a minute on Saturday and the beautiful snowflakes definitely added to the festive feeling of SantaCon.

Our group spent most of the afternoon at one bar and had a great time! It was so amazing to be reunited with so many of our best college friends in New York City during the holiday season.

We initially planned to make it out at night, but once we made it back to Merri and Pete’s apartment and Pete ordered pizzas for all of us, I was in no mood to head back out into the cold. Lounging at Merri and Pete’s place and eating pizza and ice cream sounded like the perfect end to SantaCon to me.

Thank you so much to Merri and Pete for hosting us this weekend and to our wonderful college friends for such a memorable SantaCon experience. I love you guys and had the best time!!!

I really like the quilt patch tie front dress from Maternal America, but I would also LOVE a new pair of tall boots. My feet got bigger after my son was born and mine are quite snug! Thanks! Have fun in NYC!”

Wow SantaCon looks like such a fun and amazing event. I would definitely love to go there one year. I always find if I’ve been out and go home that it is hard to get motivated to want to go out again especially in cold weather.

In Chicago we have TBOX (twelve bars of Christmas) and I’d love to do it one year. It’s basically the same idea as SantaCon – although with friends here I’m sure you’ve heard of it! I’ve been here for 4 holiday seasons, 3 of which I had finals! Maybe next year!

I lived in NYC for two years and both years my friends and I did SantaCon and it was so much fun. The first year I was Mrs. Claus and the 2nd year I was an Elf. I love the holiday season and especially SantaCon. Their is one this weekend in Ft. Lauderdale; which I doubt will be the same as NYC but going to give it a chance! Looks like you had a great trip! Loved the onesies.

I love themed holiday parties! I’ve never actually been to one though. I think I would love to go to an ugly sweater party, but I’ve heard a lot of people near me don’t want to have them anymore since so many other people do them. Not this girl!
