30 Second Rest Workout: Upper Body Edition

November 7, 2011 by Julie 53 Comments

We made it back to Ocala yesterday in the early afternoon.

(Catching up from this weekend? I ran a sub-two hour half marathon in Savannah and my legs almost fell off. It was awesome.)

I popped in a John Mayer CD about two hours into our drive and passed out for a bit, as usual. Apparently his voice makes me sleepy.

When I was waking up but still a bit groggy, I heard Ryan say, “This driver is slower than a horse’s ass.”

I looked out the window and was met with this lovely sight:

A horse’s hiney staring back at me? I knew we were back in horse country and almost home!

We spent the rest of the day unpacking and being lazy and it was glorious.

When the alarm went off this morning, I felt very grateful for the time change because 5 a.m. definitely felt like 6 a.m. and getting out of bed wasn’t too terrible.

Workout

Today’s workout concentrated on my upper body because my lower body is still pretty darn sore from Saturday’s half marathon.

Ryan and I did 20 minutes of cardio on the elliptical before I completed a 30 second rest workout that included three sets of 15 – 20 repetitions of the following exercises:

  • Ryan’s awesome shoulder move
  • Incline bicep curls
  • Superset: Tricep extensions, Upright rows
  • Tricep dips
  • Chest press on exercise ball
  • Rows
  • 3 min. various shoulder moves (only one set)
  • 50 crunches on exercise ball (only two sets)

Resting for only 30 seconds between exercises is no joke! It makes the workout so much harder.

Once we were done at the gym, we walked out to our car and were happy to see the sun rising! Hooray for earlier daylight!

Breakfast

Breakfast was enjoyed on the porch after a quick shower.

Last night I made a batch of overnight oats by combining:

  • 2/3 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1/4 cup 2 percent milk
  • 6 ounces honey Greek yogurt

I added a sliced banana to the mix this morning.

Time to grab some water before settling in to get some work done.

Hope your weekend was fantastic!

I agree! Bananas and peanut butter just go together. I love adding them to my bowl of oatmeal or to my bowl of Kellogg’s FiberPlus cereal. Tastes great on both. Yum!

I always seem to fall asleep in the car when my fiance is driving especially if it’s a long distance. I feel bad 😉

Your breakfast sure does look yummy today! Happy Monday!

LOL at the horse’s ass. I always fall asleep during car rides too and I always feel so bad for my boyfriend when I do.

Daylight savings time makes the morning a little better, but darkness at 5 PM makes me so sad! 🙁

One day I’ll madge those overnight oats. One day!

John Mayer’s voice is so relaxing isn’t it!? If I’m having trouble sleeping, I put a few of his songs on and I’m out like a light! I saw him in concert last year and he was so so good. Glad you guys had a safe drive home (even if it was a slow one!) 😉

Congrats on your half marathon time! Running a sub 2 is fantastic!! I am trying to focus more on strength training and love your workout ideas! They defintely give me inspiration at the gym! Do you often plan what strength exercises you are going to do before you get to the gym or do you make it up as you go along?

When I pass those horse trailers I always wonder if the air that must be blowing on the horse’s butt bothers them?! I mean, if your butt was hanging out the window, don’t you think you’d be annoyed? Yes, these are the thoughts that pass through my mind…

I realize this comment is totally random, but I saw you were listening to John Mayer on your ride home. I worked out next to him yesterday! I live in NYC and belong to this ridiculous gym (Equinox) where I awkwardly see celebrities all the time (I’m from Ohio…). I was so nervous the whole time! He just stared at his cell phone the whole time and then when he got off the elliptical and turned to me and said “I like your hair” (I have a bright blue streak in my blond hair). I liked smiled and awkwardly thanked him. Sure made the time go by quickly! He’s really cute!

Welp Julie, you did the impossible. You inspired me to sign up for a half marathon. While I probably will never do a marathon, I’ve always said that the longest I’d ever do (and probably would never do) would be a half marathon. And in the spirit of why I run, I signed up for the one with lots of beer at the end, the Smuttynose Rockfest Half Marathon. Allegedly it’s a very flat course by the beach. They better not be lying!

Your workout sorta reminds me of a Tabata workout. That is where you do 20 seconds of work and then rest for 10 seconds. You complete 8 rounds of one exercise that way and then move on to 8 rounds of another exercise that way. You would think it’s easy since it’s only 20 seconds of work but OMG it’s challenging!!! (Esp if you’re doing pushups!) Good job working out after the half!

Oh and your breakfast looks amazing – now I’m craving a cut up banana!!!
