I wasn’t in the mood to type out a recap of everything today because I’m sitting at my computer feeling too chatty for that. So let’s catch up in real time, just like the good ol’ days of blogging before social media took over the world!
An October Monday in Real Time
I was up at 5:15 a.m. and immediately took myself through a lower body hypertrophy workout.
(My code PBFINGERS15 should still save 15% off Stakt mats! The love I have for this mat only continues to grow, especially through my new workout challenge that requires elevated surfaces regularly. I have the Stakt Mat Pro version and it does NOT slip. EVER.)
Lower Body Hypertrophy Workout
The workout I followed is part of a 5-week Tighter Together challenge I signed up through the Madeline Moves app and I cannot tell you how much I feel like I truly needed this challenge. I got my personal training certification through NASM years ago and that knowledge has allowed me to feel confident in my own workout programming… but I’m also well aware of my shortcomings and the areas I tend to neglect when left to my own devices. (Ahem, stability. Balance. Flexibility.)
I absolutely LOVE the way this challenge is so scientifically sound and incorporates strength, stability, mobility and power components. Guys, the single-leg work and certain sloooow stability-related exercises have been humbling. Like crazy humbling. They also feel like a giant magnifying glass on the areas in my fitness programming that have been neglected for way too long. I know in my brain stability, mobility and balance work is so important, especially for longevity, but this challenge is motivating me to actually DO it rather than skip right over it.
After my workout, I grabbed a quick shower, said goodbye to Ryan as he headed off to work, and then made my way into the kitchen to get breakfast ready for the boys. Everyone was apparently a little sleepy this morning and slept past seven which made the hustle out the door feel a little chaotic, but we did it!
Breakfast 1.0 for me looked like a hot protein vanilla-matcha latte and a peppermint white chocolate ALOHA bar on the drive to the big kids’ school.
Author’s Tea
The fourth graders hosted an author’s tea first thing this morning and Rhett and I attended together to watch Chase!
Chase’s class has been working on adding dialog, similes and metaphors to their writing and Chase volunteered to read a short story he wrote in front of his class. He had us laughing out loud and we were proud of our big kid!
After the author’s tea, it was time for preschool drop off and once I said goodbye to Rhetty, I made my way to my favorite local coffee shop to set up camp for my morning work time.
Before leaving for school drop-offs, I prepped a blueberry chia pudding to eat along with my whole milk latte for breakfast 2.0 and while prepping it overnight is much preferred, I didn’t mind it being a little on the runny side for one morning. (I just stored it in a Pack-It to keep it cold until I was ready to dig in.)
As for the rest of the day, my morning will be spent with my booty parked right in this coffee shop chair working away and then I’ll be back in mom mode with after-school activities (it’s a karate day over here) and the usual kid chaos. I hope you all enjoy your Monday, my friends!

Hi Julie! I enjoy your blog and have boys around the same age. I don’t usually comment but want to share this in a kind way with no judgment! Please don’t bring your own food to an establishment like a coffee shop. This industry has been hurting and would probably appreciate it if you purchase a treat to go with your coffee. I’ve worked in the restaurant/hospitality industry for most of my life. I would be sad to see a patron bring their own food and most don’t allow it. Just sharing from the other side of the counter!
Thank you for this nudge (in a kind way — that is also so appreciated)!! I hate to admit I didn’t even think about bringing my own food because I order a drink while I work but absolutely can see how bringing my own food is in bad taste. Thank you for making me think twice about this!!
Julie, did you get your hair done recently? It looks great! I would love a blog post by you about how often you get your hair done, the services you request, etc. I would also love to know how often you get Botox (I saw your instagram about it!) Being in our 40s is a whole new world when it comes to hair and skin (or so I’m finding!)
I would love a post on this topic as well! You always looks fabulous and lately I’m feeling like I need all the help haha 🙂
Ha! I feel like I need all the help sometimes, too, so I definitely get it!!! But thank you for your kind words, Debbie!!
Hi Sara! I did!! I went a little blonder this time and wish I had more insight to share about what I ask for beyond showing inspo pics and asking for something that will grow out reasonably well since I only like to get my hair done every 8-10 months. And yessss I feel you about 40s bringing some changes. I get Dysport (like botox) between my eyes (my “11s”) because that’s the area where I get the deepest wrinkles and my eyes go there first so it bothers me most! I also do my forehead but am super conservative with both as I am naturally expressive and never want a frozen face look! Beyond that, I love my skincare routine (maybe that could be a post?) and feel like there are a few things there that make a difference in my skin when I stay consistent (vitamin c, hyaluronic acid, etc.)
This is all great information Julie, thank you!! I just started going to a new hair stylist for highlights and root touch ups. I’m so jealous you can go once every 8-10 months, that’s amazing! Now that I’m 45, I definitely need the root touch ups!
Yes, I would love a skincare routine post! I’m about to hit 35 and my skin has been feeling blah lately.
