Ridin’ Solo

March 2, 2011 by Julie 79 Comments

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, for the most part, I really prefer working out by myself. I tend to push myself harder and I like getting my workout done quickly. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am. 😉

Plus, when I workout with someone else, I’m usually concerned about how they’re feeling… are we running too slow, doing too much, etc. I forget to actually focus on my own workout.

I do have exceptions to this rule:

  • Group exercise classes (So much fun with a friend)
  • Steady-state cardio (Elliptical, long runs, etc.)
  • Long walks and hiking (I get bored without a buddy)

So, I guess I like a workout buddy when I’m not in the mood to kick my butt in the gym. 🙂

Fortunately I had the lovely company of my friend Merri on my morning walk with Sadie! After the gym (BodyPump + 20 minutes on the elliptical), we headed to my apartment to pick up the pup before taking her on a nice long walk around Lake Eola.

Merri made the time fly by. If I didn’t have that silly office job to get to this morning, I gladly would’ve kept walking for another hour or so.

Breakfast

After our walk, I came home ready for breakfast.

Breakfast

I first toasted a cinnamon spice Alternative Bagel before topping it with peanut butter, nectarine slices, nutmeg and chia seeds.

Check Out the Chia!

Fruity Layers

With the way that that nectarines were layered, it reminded me of a double cheeseburger… only not quite so greasy and a lot more colorful.

Chomp!

G-o-o-d!

Time to get to work! 😀

Question of the Morning

  • Do you prefer working out alone or with a buddy?

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I always work out alone, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I don’t like the pressure of trying to keep up with someone else, or worrying that I am slowing them down. My workouts are dedicated time where I can think about everything or think about nothing. ME time!

I’m totally the same when I work out with someone–I always worry about them! I feel like I’m slowing people down. Plus, I can’t talk and run AT ALL!!! I get totally winded and feel like I’m crawling along. I love running alone and being able to get into my own zone.

On the other hand, group X classes are great! If I have a specific class I want to get to at a certain time & I know a friend will be there, it definitely motivates me!

I’m a solo girl for the same reasons as you – I don’t like worrying about my pace or if they want to stop! But group classes like Yoga or Strength training ones are fine because you’re not in charge anyway.

I also enjoy working out alone – even not seeing anyone I remotely know to distract me! But I do wish my friends had the same gym membership as me so we could take classes together!

I think it depends on my mood…if I’m training I need to workout with someone who pushes me or by myself.

However, it’s always nice to go with someone because I’m sort of a scaredy cat! 🙂

    mmm…that looks delicious!

It depends. I workout with my BF and her trainer Husband 2 x /week and I love it…maybe because he’s a personal trainer and runs a more boot camp style with us. But, if I’m running, I like to do it solo. I too worry about the other person and I can’t concentrate on my run.

I actually prefer working out alone- because I too work harder alone 🙂 But I teach group exercise classes and love having that energy there too!! Awesome b-fast, Julie!!

ALONE. I don’t want people judging me or anything while I’m running too slow or doing my crunches wrong.

I like to work out alone for the most part, like you I like to do my own routine and stuff and not worry about the other person. Plus I tend to stay a while and I don’t like to end it short.

BUT I do like having someone when I do the elliptical or arc trainer because those do tend to get boring.

PS. it looks like you are having awesome weather and I am TOTALLY jealous of it!

I’m by far a workout-alone type of person. I don’t workout *nearly* as intensely with someone than I do on my own!

I’m the same way! Working out with a friend is never as hard as a workout for me! When I’m by myself I can adjust suddenly…like, if I feel like I have a lot more energy, I can quickly jump into speedwork during my run, otherwise if I’m not feeling the elliptical, I can jump off after 5 minutes and go bike instead.

Mmmm…interesting lunch! Never would have thought to combine nectarines + PB!

Definitely prefer working out solo…I am so awkward doing all my weird moves and sweating like a beast, I wanna keep it to myself! Haha.

I like having a workout buddy on my long runs. Anything over 6 miles and I start to lose my motivation when I’m alone. That should mean my 9 miler this weekend should be interesting!

Your post is so fitting! I went to the gym with the man friend this morning and kept worrying if I was working out for too long, was he ready to go home, did he want to work out longer or harder. But-I’m not really complaining because he is such a good (cute!) workout buddy!

I prefer long workouts with a buddy but short runs and cross training I usually go alone. Love Body Pump with or without a buddy!

I definitely prefer doing most of my workouts alone, but I love working out with my husband when we have time. As a Personal Trainer I push myself more when I am not worrying about someone else. I do take walks at work with a buddy and hate doing that alone!

I loooove group exercise classes! Especially boot camp and kick boxing because they push me reaal hard. And I also like to jog with a friend. But other than that, I prefer to be solo.

i totally prefer to work out alone, except my exceptions are my husband or the occasional run with a friend. otherwise it turns social and not a workout 🙂

I used to have a really good workout buddy until I moved to my new job. Sometimes we would run together outside or on the treadmill at the gym but a lot of the time we would go to the gym and do our own thing. I think we did a good job of motivating each other and not getting in each others way. I really miss her!

I love working out by myself. I see all these blogs with running groups and people getting together to do their long marathon training runs…. and it really doesn’t appeal to me at all. I would worry too much about slowing other people down, making other people run fast, having things to talk about, etc. I like going solo.

    so. tasty.
I like to work out alone because I also find that I can just get it done. I don’t know how my workout would go if I did it with someone; I might spend the whole time comparing myself to the other people I was with. besides, when I’m alone I can sing : )

I like to workout alone – I’m with you on worrying about the other person, and I kind of view it as my “me” time.

Do the chia seeds have any flavor or just for texture?
