Healthy Movie Theater Snacks

August 8, 2011 by Julie 135 Comments

I miss my smoothies!

I miss the their creamy texture. Their cold temperature. The way I could cram veggies (spinach!) into my morning meal without even tasting them.

This weekend, Ryan and I drove to our storage unit in hopes of locating our beloved Vitamix among the boxes.

Unfortunately the box labeled “blender” was nowhere in sight. There are likely a bunch of boxes stacked on top of it because it was deemed a “heavy” box that could support others as we were packing. Bummer.

So, another breakfast at the hotel buffet kicked off the workweek.

hotel breakfast buffet 001

I used one of the pieces of whole wheat toast to make an egg and jelly sandwich.

It made me miss my favorite bagelwiches!

I smeared the other piece of toast with whipped butter. Bread and butter are one of life’s greatest creations.

Healthy Movie Theater Snacks

This morning I read an article from the Huffington Post that detailed “10 Movie Snacks to Pick Instead of Popcorn.”

The list included:

• Bottled water, club soda or Crystal Lite
• Flavor and Fiber Gnu bar or Chocolite Protein Bar
• Dry cereal: Fiber One, Kashi Go Lean or Puffins
• Low-fat mozzarella string cheese
• 100 calorie mini bags of popcorn
• 1-ounce of pistachios
• Baby carrots or sliced peppers
• Pretzels
• Fruit such as apples, strawberries or raspberries
• Roasted almonds 100-calorie pack
• Shelled, salted edamame
• A mix of almonds, raisins and mini marshmallows
• Jicama matchsticks, tossed with lime juice and chili powder
• Frozen red or green grapes

I loved the idea of bringing your own mini bags of popcorn, pretzels, edamame and pistachios. All salty and all totally delicious.

For some reason, I just cant wrap my head around packing a protein bar, carrot sticks or frozen grapes. I think that when I go to the movies, if I’m going to buy a snack, I want something salty. I can’t smell buttery popcorn and then eat an apple and feel happy. (Of course I can do sweet and salty during a movie. Peanut M&Ms + Popcorn = Heaven.)

When it comes to seeing movies in the theater, Ryan and I usually don’t buy any snacks because they’re so darn expensive. Well, I will bring in some change to buy candy from the 50-cent candy machines, but that doesn’t really count.

But I must say there’s nothing like movie-theater popcorn. When we do buy popcorn at the movies, we adopt the “no kernel left behind” philosophy. Smile

One of my all-time favorite books, The Help, was made into a movie recently and is debuting in the theaters this Wednesday and I’m really looking forward to seeing it. I’m thinking I’ll pack my own mini bag of popcorn, perhaps with a few chocolate chips thrown in for some sweetness. Yum!

Great ideas! I snuck in my own bag of popcorn one time — it fit perfectly in my massive purse! Why would I want their popcorn that contains who-knows-what when I can have kettle corn? Mmmm. 🙂

Nice post! I don’t really like to buy snack at the cinema, too expensive. Sometimes I buy popcorn but I don’t like to fing myself covered with it when the lights are back… Ok sometimes I bring a chocolate tablet ^^

I’m a sucker for movie popcorn and kakimochi (I think that mix is a local Hawaii-thing) I’ll usually wait for a movie I really want to see to splurge on the buttery goodness though!

I have one of those movie theater rewards cards! So whenever I score a free popcorn, it feels like christmas 🙂 and the movie is just that much better! Popcorn and rasinettes is my favorite snack.. I like the sandwich a rasinette between the popcorn.. Mmmm

I don’t actually buy movie theatre candy/popcorn because they’re so expensive, but usually stop off and pick some up on the way. Some of my faves are raisinettes, pretzel m&ms, gummy bears, and of course popcorn. As a healthier alternative, pop chips, quaker quakes, or homemade chex mix (with m&ms of course). on a related topic, what is your favorite movie??

I used to think movie theater popcorn was the best snack ever, despite the high calorie count and price. But when my ex and I went to see Avatar, we got a jumbo popcorn to share since we were going to miss dinner for the 3-hour plus movie. Popcorn overload! We both felt so sick from eating so much popcorn that I still can’t stomach the thought of eating another movie theater popcorn kernel, and that was well over a year ago!

i pretty much refuse to buy snacks at the movie theater. It costs like twenty dollars for popcorn and a drink! I have a few staples I bring…I have to-go little cups of peanut butter so i love having those with pretzels…it doesnt work as well with the squeeze packs unfortunately. I also love kettle corn and one time I actually brought a subway sandwich…i felt pretty guilty about that but I was starving and it was right next door. A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do.

I typically don’t buy snacks at the movie theater–too expensive! However, my favorite movie theater snack indulgence (both money and eating) is popcorn and Junior Mints. When I bring my own snacks, I like to bring one treat (like a homemade whole wheat dark chocolate chip cookie) and salty, whole wheat crackers to munch on (like Triscuits). Bringing a healthier treat and yummy munchies to the movies makes me feel like I’m not missing out on popcorn and Junior Mints!

I am WAY to cheap to be buying snacks at the theatre! This is why somebody invented purses that look like duffle bags- so women can stash their fridge and pantry into their purse and snack throughout an entire movie! lol. My favorite snack for a movie theatre is probably grapes- because they’re sweet and I’m a secret grape addict…shhh-don’t tell 😉
If you go see The Help, let us know how it is! I read the book a while back and really want to see if the movie is JUST as good (even though books are ALWAYS better than the movies. hands down)

We go to the movies a lot, and its rare if we dont get popcorn. It is expensive, but I usually eat it as a meal(I know very healthy) I allow myself to eat popcorn at the movies cause I love it. Just finished the Help this w/e and cant wait to see the movie!

Oh gosh, I haven’t bought a snack at a movie theatre in years. I’m way too cheap for that. Plus I generally go to early showings (see: “I’m way too cheap for that”), and I’m just not really in the mood for popcorn or anything sweet at like…10 a.m. Haha.

I don’t believe in trying to be healthy in a movie theater. It just doesn’t work well for me. But I do buy candy elsewhere and sneak it in. At most I will buy a giant soda and split it with whoever was brave enough to be my friend that night.

With 4 kids and all my family in another state I don’t get to the movies very often, the last movie we saw was Law Abiding Citizen. In light of that when hubby and I do go, we go Gold Class and have our snacks brought to us on a tray and served in glass bowls. No holding back on a night out for us!! 🙂

It’s so funny you posted this because on Saturday, my sister and I popped two bags of 100 cal popcorn and brought two sparkling waters from home. It was awesome and so cheap!

Like you, I’m dying to see The Help (the book was fantastic). Since I make homemade suckers all the time, I love bringing one of those. Because I’m just licking them, they last a long time and satisfy my sweet tooth.

Okay i am with most people, I do not buy snacks at the movie theater. It is too much money for not enough content.

I normally pack some almonds in a little baggy to eat. I must admit there is nothing quite like movie theater popcorn and it is good. but i only get that if someonesle is buying. lol

As for the movie have seen some promo stuff for it and it looks good!

Sometimes I bring full meals with me to the movies (I’m talking PB sandwiches, almonds, cut up fruit, the works). My BF always suggests I bring my “big purse” with us to fit it all!

I believe what you wrote made a ton of sense. But, consider this, what if you wrote a catchier post title? I am not saying your content isn’t good, however what if you added something that grabbed people’s attention? I mean Healthy Movie Theater Snacks
    | Peanut Butter Fingers is a little plain. You could glance at Yahoo’s home page and watch how they create article titles to grab viewers interested. You might add a video or a pic or two to get people excited about everything’ve got to say. In my opinion, it might make your blog a little bit more interesting.
