Rainy Arrival

October 11, 2013 by Julie 30 Comments

Hello from rainy Gettysburg! Our time in Pennsylvania has been quite wet and dreary so far, but we’ve still been having a lot of fun. Hooray for family time!

We touched down in Baltimore around 9:30 a.m. yesterday and after my mom picked us up at the airport, we had only one thing on our mind: Food!

My dad had my sister and I salivating on the plane when he talked about the food from Hillcrest Restaurant and Bakery, a cozy restaurant that began as a bakery in 1961, located in Littlestown, Pennsylvania. We headed straight there from the airport for a bite to eat!

The weather outside was cold and wet, so hot soup sounded like the perfect way to begin my meal.

A bowl of the Manhattan crab soup warmed me right up!

For my main meal, I opted for a BLT and loved every bite.

BLT

The folks at Hillcrest know what they’re doing and have customers pay for their food at the bakery counter.

Pies, cookies and fresh doughnuts stare back at you as you pay the bill and since my family and I are all blessed with a raging sweet tooth, we had to get some treats to go.

doughnuts

We selected a variety of doughnuts to enjoy later and all I can say is oh my gosh, they were all amazing! Filled doughnuts usually aren’t my thing. It seems like the filling is always some weird custard or thick jelly, but the filling in the powdered and chocolate frosted doughnuts from Hillcrest Bakery was unreal. It was sweet and fluffy homemade buttercream. Delicious!

Once our stomachs were full, it was time to see my grandma, Nana, but we made a quick detour to see the Mount St. Mary’s University campus.

Mount St. Marys

My dad attended the university as both an undergraduate and graduate student and we had fun listening to him talk about his time at Mount St. Mary’s. Even in the dreary weather, the campus was beautiful.

We arrived at my grandma Nana’s place just as she was waking up from an afternoon nap! It was perfect timing and we spent the afternoon catching up with her which was wonderful.

I’ve spent all day today soaking up time with my family and it has been wonderful. I hope to check in with you guys again soon, but right now I’m off to eat some Maryland crabs for dinner! Yesssss!

Your lunch looks incredible! I wish it was cold enough in Orange County to have a little soup, but it’s not there yet…and those doughnuts! Oh my god, they look insane! I don’t know why, but doughnuts always look good!

Those donuts look insanely delicious but I’m a sucker for a plain old glazed donut. What happened to your dads arm? Enjoy your trip and those crabs.

Awww that’s great that you got to spend some time catching up with her! And I totally agree about filled donuts – I always thing the filling is weird. I guess it’s just not my thing!

i drive through littlestown once a year on my way to my cousin’s house in westminster maryland!! i’ve driven by that restaurant a dozen times. i will have to stop next time especially since i see that they have graham cracker cream pie! graham cracker cream pie is a family specialty on my dad’s side. weird that it’s raining on that side of the state. we’ve had dry weather for almost a whole week on the other side which is atypical.

I love Mt. Saint Mary’s!!! My parents live in the Frederick, MD area and I attend law school at the University of Maryland. We used to make trips to the Grotto when I needed some prayer and serene time. I just love the Grotto and the surrounding campus area. Absolutely breathtaking!

OMG!!! had to check out one of my favorite blogs….and how happy was my heart to discover you are in my old stomping grounds! I was born and raised in good old Littlestown, PA! Touring around the battlefield never ever got old. Your pictures and descriptions of Hillcrest are spot on. Every summer that was the place to go for homemade raspberry ice cream. Enjoy your time there. I am wondering if you are there for The Blue Gray Half?
