My Parents’ Gettysburg Engagement

October 13, 2013 by Julie 28 Comments

Saturday morning in Gettysburg began the active way with another mother/daughter Jazzercise class. My mom, sister and I took a 60-minute class before everyone was up and moving. It felt good to sweat!

On our way back to my grandma’s house, we made a short detour to The Ragged Edge Coffee House, a local coffee shop, for a cappuccino.

We got a big kick out of their tip jar!

Apparently they update the tip jar with a new question every day and patrons vote with their money.

Inside the shop, some students were filming a movie, so we waited off to the side of the counter for our drinks. They were worth the wait!

With our hot drinks in hand, we walked down the street toward our car and my mom pointed out the old apartment she shared with my dad when they first got married.

They shared a third floor apartment in the building in the above picture. My mom moved in with my dad after they got married and when they were dating, if my dad was still awake when my mom got off work at the local hospital where she worked as a nurse, he’d leave a light on so she could stop by and visit him. (Oh the days before cell phones!)

My mom said that on one evening, when my dad’s light was on, she stopped in to say hello and he told her he “made the biggest decision of his life” and proposed! I always knew the story of my dad’s proposal but for some reason I pictured it at my grandma’s house, so it was neat to be able to see the apartment where that special moment occurred.

Lunch

Once my mom, sister and I made it back to my grandma’s house, it was breakfast time and we ate a little something before it was time to shower and get ready for the day. We had plans to grab lunch with my great aunt and ordered subs from Tommy’s to enjoy at home.

IMG_0366

Ever since I was a little girl, trips to Gettysburg to visit my grandmothers have always included Tommy’s cheeseburger subs and Ernie’s Texas Lunch hot dogs. They’re two of my parents’ childhood favorites and my sister and I have learned to love them, too!

I ate my cheeseburger sub and loved every bite.

We also dug into a delicious cake for dessert.

In the late afternoon, my great aunt headed back to her house in Carlisle and while my grandma took an afternoon nap, my mom, sister and I headed out to downtown Gettysburg to walk around the local shops and explore.

We had fun peeking into some of the touristy shops and walked around for about two hours until our stomachs told us it was time to head back home.

My family and I spent the rest of the evening in our pajamas and relaxed for a few hours until it was time for dinner. Once we were done eating, we dug into apple crisp that I made from scratch for everyone for dessert and we served it with a couple of scoops of creamy vanilla ice cream. Not a bad way to end the day!

I hope you guys are having a great weekend!

Ok, so I just had to comment because the apartment building in the picture….is where I currently live (first floor, so not the same unit your parents lived in)!! And while I was on a walk with my mom yesterday, we actually passed you and your mom and sister. I thought about saying hi, but didn’t know if that would seem too weird. And if this isn’t already freaky enough…my mom has worked at Gettysburg Hospital for over 35 years, so she probably has met your mom before. Ask her if she knows Cindy (Heyser) Bucher. Glad you are enjoying your visit to our little town 🙂

My family participates in the reenactments 🙂 We don’t do as many now as we used to now that my brother and I are both older and moved out of our parents house but we did go to Gettysburg this summer for the 150th Anniversary 🙂 Unfortunately, it was SO HOT that being out in the field was terrible lol But every chance I got to run into town and explore, I took! I love sightseeing and cannot get enough of Gettysburg, I will never be tired of exploring around there 🙂
