Post That Nutritional Info!

Hooray for HoneyBaked Ham!

Ryan’s mom sent us home with a large bag of leftover HoneyBaked Ham from yesterday’s big Easter lunch. Ryan enjoyed a big ham and cheese sandwich for dinner last night which inspired my lunch today.

I wanted a ham sandwich!

Monday's Lunch

I enjoyed my sandwich with a side of roasted turnip fries and ketchup.

For dessert I dug into my Easter candy and enjoyed two Dove dark chocolate eggs.

Posting Nutritional Information

How did I miss this!?

Apparently a couple weeks ago, a new health law was passed that will require chain restaurants with more than 20 locations, such as Starbucks and McDonald’s, to post calorie information on their menus and drive through signs.

Additionally, nutritional information must be displayed for foods sold in vending machines.

This information should be available as soon as 2011.

How do you feel about restaurants posting nutritional information?

I think this is awesome. With the growing rate of obesity in the United States, I think it is so important for people to have adequate nutritional information to make educated decisions about what they choose to put into their bodies. Whether they choose to ignore the information is up to them, but at least it’s out there and visible.

    I think it is great! We should all be educated before we eat something, even if we don’t want to (like when eating cheesecake.) 😉

    I think it’s a double-edged sword. I live in NYC, where it’s already a law, and while it does help me to make better choices, it also makes me feel unnecessary guilt about indulging. I don’t need to know how many calories are in my cupcake!! Plus, so far they only post calories, which isn’t really an indicator of the health of an item. Fries may have fewer calories than a huge veggie sammie on hearty bread with hummus and avocado, but we all know which one is a better choice. I’m interested to see how people throughout the country react to this, though!

    Funny I just bought some turnips at the store to cook as fries tonight! I am interested to try them…as I was cutting them up, they have a “smell” that I didn’t expect. You know what I mean?!?!?!?

    I think that for the majority of people, posting nutritional information is a big plus. Knowledge is power, you know? BUT I do know that for some people who have struggled with eating disorders – or even just obsessing too much over calories and such – eating out is an opportunity to be liberated from the numbers game. For this group of people, posting nutritional information might only increase anxiety, obsessiveness, and guilt. But like I said, that is a select group of people. The majority, I think, will benefit.

    yeah i DEF think it can help obesity!! i hope it doesnt make some girls obsess tho-but i think it will bring more good than bad

    I think it’s a great idea to include nutritional info on menus. It will at least give people the knowldege they need to make better choices. Nobodies forcing them to, it just gives them the opportunity to.

    I think posting nutritional info is long overdue. Most people have no idea how many calories they’re eating. Even when they order a fast food salad, they can still be taking in over 1,000 calories, but they think it’s healthy because it’s a salad.

    I’m actually writing an article on menu-labeling laws for my public health law class right now. The federal bill couldn’t be timed better! I’m planning to (somehow, not sure how yet) put a finished version of my article up on my blog once it’s finished.

    I am definitely in support of menu-labeling. It is there for people to use or not use. Plus, if restaurants even make small improvements in the nutrition of their foods, that is good as well.

    WOAH I definitely didn’t hear about this new law. I have mixed feelings about it. I guess it would raise a lot of awareness about calorie content, but whether or not a food is high calorie doesn’t correlate with wether or not it is healthy. It’s just a small piece of our big problem, but I suppose it’s a step in the right direction.

    I agree that this is great. I think way too many people are ignorant about all things nutrition related. It’s sad. I will admit though….a lot of times when I go out to eat I get something that I know is more of a splurge. Only because we rarely go out to eat and when we do it is to favorite places that I have to get what I love.

    I live in NY and often see the nutritional stats on menus… I think it’s great, but I know there are some people that don’t like it. It’s definitely surprising though when you go to a restaurant and can’t find anything under 500 calories! yikes! It truly is so much better to eat at home!

    Oh my goodness, how did I miss this new law?!?! I think it’s AWESOME!! Not only will it (hopefully) reduce the obesity epidemic, but it will also make eating out much more convenient for the already health conscious eaters. Perfect!

    I did not hear about this law, BUT i think it is GREAT! I think more people should be aware that a big mac has 500 some calories when they go to order that with a side of fries & a shake. I mean this should not stop anyone from ordering something & probably won’t stop everyone but it is good to be aware I think! Just my opinion of course.

    In NYC they have a law that every restaurant has to post calorie content. I love it! I hate being thrown off by the “a salad can be more cals than a burger” paradigm, and it really clues you in on what foods you want to eat! And to not be fooled by “healthy choices” that aren’t actually healthy!

    I know that I”m really late on this, but it’s funny that I read this today after my experience last night…

    I went out to eat with a friend at a restaurant that I’ve eaten at several times, but not recently. Using I get Chicken Wings or a Chicken Wrap, but when I opened the menu, all the calories were right by each of the food items and all my choices were horrible!! The Wings had nearly 800 calories, not including fries or sauces, and the wrap had well over 1000. It was quite the deterant and definitely led me in the path of a grilled chicken sandwich. I think that nutritional information is good to know, but when I might just want a burger (their burgers were around 1400 calories each!!!) it absolutely pushed me away. I would like to have the option to see calories, like online or something, but I found it kind of off putting to have it in my face when I’m trying to enjoy a not so healthy meal 😉 Maybe it’s all for the better though…
