Alpha & Omega Corn Maze (Year 3!) and Weekend Fun

September 27, 2021 by Julie 7 Comments

If I could rewind and relive this past weekend again, I absolutely would for a myriad of reasons. The weather was unreal — mid 70s and sunny — and we filled our time with festive fall fun thanks to a visit to Alpha & Omega Corn Maze in Hamptonville, North Carolina on Saturday.

We first discovered this maze back in 2019 when a mom from Chase’s preschool recommended it to me and we’ve made it a point to bring the boys back every year since. The maze is a little less than an hour from us but the drive is an easy one. We thought we might be able to have Rhett power through his morning nap during our corn maze adventure and thankfully our plan worked out well. (Rhett is still taking two naps a day but occasionally skips a nap without too many issues as long as we’re outside and he’s distracted.) We arrived at Alpha & Omega right when it opened at 10 a.m. and made a beeline for the corn maze.

Chase and Ryder are adventure-loving kids and anything that takes place outside and involves a mission of some sort is right up their alley, so they were all about the corn maze this year.

It took us a little less than 30 minutes to made it through the entire corn maze — that is for those of us who completed the corn maze the correct way. A certain three-year-old’s bladder had me, Ryder and Rhett taking the emergency exit for a little potty break but Ryder clearly had no idea we didn’t do it the “right” way and still celebrated big time!

Chase and Ryan were pretty psyched to finish the real deal!

After the maze, we took full advantage of everything else on the property and watched a pig race, rode giant tricycles, went on a mini train ride, played in a corn pit, bumped along on a wagon ride, jumped on jumping pads and raced rubber duckies.

I’m tellin’ ya, this place is a kid paradise and there’s a reason we make sure to visit every fall!

We spent a solid three hours at Alpha & Omega and easily could’ve stayed longer but we knew Rhett was ready for some downtime and loaded back into the car to head home. Ryan and I should know by now not to expect a great car nap from Rhett and he slept for all of 10 minutes in the beginning of the drive which was somehow just long enough to ruin any hopes for an afternoon nap. Thankfully he seemed content to just hang out with his big brothers at home so that’s exactly what we did before heading back out for a neighborhood walk before firing up the grill and eating an early dinner.

All of the boys were in bed and asleep by 7:15 p.m. which was amazing and gave me and Ryan the chance to sit on the swing in our backyard and hang out for a bit before we were ready to call it a night, too.

Sunday

A chill Sunday is my favorite kind of Sunday so I was all about our low-key day. The morning began with a little excitement because a local road race had runners running right by our house! We set up lawn chairs and a speaker and played music as we cheered everyone along. The boys also loved drawing good luck pictures for the runners to see in sidewalk chalk and showing them their super-cool dance moves.

Of course once the final runner ran by, the boys had to make up a race of their own so we raced up and down the road in front of our house a few times before heading inside for cinnamon rolls!

The cinnamon rolls looked better than they tasted but I suppose that’s what I get for trusting a shortcut recipe that called for using store-bought pizza dough as the base. Apparently there’s a reason the more in-depth cinnamon roll recipes get all the good reviews!

Eventually Rhett was ready for his morning nap and while he slept, Ryan did yard work, I completed a leg work out in the driveway and Chase and Ryder ran around outside. We then went on a short walk before I could tell Ryder needed a nap.

Ryder often bypasses his naps on the weekends (and a lot of week days, too, as he usually only naps 2-3 days a week these days) but it was clear he really needed the rest yesterday. I stayed back with a sleeping Ryder while Ryan took Chase and Rhett on a bike ride around the neighborhood and I got some work done.

The rest of our afternoon went by in a bit of a blur of nap time for Rhett and soccer for Ryan. My father-in-law was awesome and offered to join Ryan at his game at 4 p.m. and watch the big kids while Rhett napped and I got some more computer time in. Any pocket of work time during the weekend does wonders for helping me stay afloat these days so I’m always so grateful for them.

Once everyone was home, it was bath time, dinner time and bed time! I started reading The Magic of Found Objects before bed last night and am enjoying it so far. Maddie Dawson has such a whimsical, magical writing style that always makes her books fun to read.

As for the week ahead, it should be business as usual around here although this morning will be a little different because I have an appointment to get Rhett’s lip tie checked out. I’m not sure if I wrote about his lip tie in this space yet but, long story short, Rhett has a lip tie that previously went undetected when he had his posterior tongue tie revised. We’re heading off to get this one checked out by a different specialist (a highly-recommended pediatric dentist in the area) this morning and I’m hoping everything goes well.

And now I’m off! Enjoy your Monday, my friends!

Ohhh please share how the lip tie consult goes! My 4.5 month old son has a lip tie – we saw a pediatric dentist about a month ago and since his lip tie doesn’t impact breastfeeding (thankfully), the dentist said we didn’t have to worry about a release (for now)…but of course I’m all worried about what it could mean for the future, dentition, speech, etc.

    Happy Monday to you 🙂

Hope you love them!! The minute I put them on I fell in love. As someone who has never loved skinny jeans, I’ve been waiting for looser-fitting jeans for yearsss — haha!

Hi Julie!! What a FUN weekend! Always amazed by all you pack in!

A quick question, (asked completely to seek advice/insight and no judgement at all) — I am wondering how do you navigate doing fun activities with your kids with the current climate of the Covid surge we are in? I find it can be so challenging to balance kids’ mental health and socialization and need for fun with the realities of the ongoing pandemic. Would love your mama perspective and so appreciate you!

Hi Kit!! I totally get where you are coming from and it seems like everyone has such different comfort levels, etc. and we’re all just trying to figure things out in ways that feel safe and best for our families. For us, right now, we’re primarily doing outdoor activities for the boys with school being the indoor exception (they are both masked at their respective schools). Fortunately the weather here is ideal for outdoor fun right now so all of our play dates and friend hangouts seem to naturally happen outside anyway which makes this a bit easier. Ryan and I both share a comfort level with outdoor activities for our kids based on the recommendations from the CDC.
