A Food Like Naan Other

September 20, 2011 by Julie 152 Comments

At lunchtime today I finally tried naan!

naan 003

For those of you not in the know about naan (like me as of two days ago), it is a leavened, oven-baked flatbread that basically rocked my taste buds!

I’ve seen naan for sale at the grocery store forever, but always passed it up because it looked somewhat dry and flavorless to me.

I finally tried naan thanks to some samples I received from the kind people at Stonefire and fell in love.

It was doughy. Smoky. Flavorful. Airy. Delicious!

Honestly, it was even fun to eat! I felt like a two-year-old, as I picked off the "bubbly" pieces of the naan to eat first. (I do this with pizza, too.)

naan 007

I had plans to use the naan to make a cheesy pizza of sorts, but once I tasted it, I just wanted to gobble it up and ate it with a side of hummus for dipping.

naan 002

I ate Stonefire’s whole grain tandoori naan and loved that it was packed with protein and fiber.

naan 005

Ten grams of protein and eight grams of fiber in one naan! Sweet!

I already have a breakfast idea for naan swimming around in my brain.

Room Update

I finally started reading Room, the book we all selected for the PBF Book Club, last night and it’s pretty interesting. I’m not very far at all, but I want to discuss it with you guys already! I suppose we must wait until October 3 – the official “discussion date” – but I’m antsy! Who is this “Old Nick” guy!? (<— Don’t answer that.)

The Sing Off

Moving right along…

I am in love with Straight No Chaser, an a cappella group that originated at Indiana University (any IU readers out there?), and can’t get enough of a cappella music in general, so I am super pumped that the new season of The Sing Off premiered last night!

(Please go listen to Straight No Chaser’s version of the 12 Days of Christmas if you’ve never listened to it before. Phenomenal!)

I basically listen to every a cappella song out there with my mouth open and love watching the different a cappella groups compete and perform songs from all different genres on The Sing Off.

I have been listening to this song performed by The YellowJackets last night on The Sing Off all day today (fast forward to 2:06 for the beginning of the song).

The YellowJackets “Wavin’ Flag” World Cup Song

It’s such a happy and fun song!

Great music for powering through your daily to-do list!

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I love listening to acapella music. I’ve seen Michael Buble in concert twice and both times this group called Naturally 7 opened up for them. They have amazing voices. They sing acapella and make insrument noises just using their voices. It’s crazy! Random fact, I used to be in an acapella singing group in college. So fun 🙂

I’ve never had naan bread either or Indian food! I’m dying to try though!

I love Straight No Chaser, and I love the Sing-Off! I was so pumped it came back on last night. My friend first introduced them to me, we’re from KY to a friend of hers went to IU and knew about them. I L-O-V-E their Christmas CD and all the songs they record. They seem so fun and it would great to see them in person!

My university had an acapella group as well, one of all guys and then one of all girls. Their concerts were always awesome

Do you watch Glee? I’ve never been much into musicals, but I love that show. Thankfully it starts back up tonight! Big tv week 🙂

Try the garlic Naan! It’ll be a party in your tummy. I really like making pizzas with it or eating traditional indian food. Making homemade naan isn’t that hard either if you’ve got some patience and an indian/asian market near you!

I agree with the person above who said you need to have naan in a real Indian restaurant…you probably won’t like the grocery store stuff after that:). Of course, I live in the Millwoods area in Edmonton Alberta, which is basically little India, so I have lots of great places to choose. I highly recommend doing a lunch or dinner buffet, especially if you’ve never had Indian food, so you can try lots of things. (Channa Masala and Kheer for dessert are a must!)
I also love The Sing Off. I don’t like reality shows or competition shows in general, but this one actually has lots of great talent and we don’t have to see people embarrass themselves or ridiculed.

WOW! Good for you! Naan ROCKS doesn’t it? I’m Indian so my mom makes it a lot. And it isn’t that hard to make from scratch. Try it with tandoori chicken curry or regular chicken curry- that is the way we usually eat it. Best combo ever! There are also flavors like garlic, butter, and spinach available. Gotta try garlic! BTW- I stumbled on this hilarious post from one of my favorite blogs that made me laugh soooooooo hard. I thought you would like it so here’s the link http://www.joythebaker.com/blog/2011/02/lemon-cornmeal-breakfast-cake/ I am not trying to spam you at all and don’t know the blogger personally- cross my heart 🙂 I just think you would have a good laugh to brighten your day. I just bought that exact naan last week to try your crock pot BBQ chicken pizza. I thought it was a flat breat like what you used in your recipe (whatever brand you discuss isn’t sold in the Seattle area that I could find). Anyway, the naan wasn’t really the right idea for a pizza crust, as it is soft. Woops. it was still okay… I will have to look for a better option next time!

As for naan, if you think that grocery store version is good, you really should go eat the real-deal in an indian restaurant. You’ll find that while the kind you ate was tasty, the authentic version is much different and even more buttery, flaky and delicious.
