A Not-So-Intense Workout

May 13, 2010 by Julie 27 Comments

This morning I woke up in the mood to stay in bed and read the first Percy Jackson book.

Percy Jackson

I knew I’d be kicking myself later if I didn’t get at least a semi-decent workout in, so I picked up my book and headed to the gym.

I told myself I could just take it easy on the stationary bike and read my book the whole time if I wanted to.

Of course, once I made it to the gym, I wanted to make my workout worthwhile, so I hopped from machine to machine and completed this cardio routine:

  • 15 min. incline walking
  • 20 min. elliptical
  • 5 min. adaptive motion trainer
  • 10 min. stationary bike

Magically I was able to read my book almost the entire time and nearly made it through 100 pages! (This should tell you something about the intensity of my workout though… 😉 )

Sometimes you need an easy-peasy workout!

Breakfast

When I was done with my workout, I came home and took Sadie on a short walk before fixin’ breakfast.

I really enjoyed the taste of Brie in my lunch yesterday and incorporated the yummy cheese into my morning meal to start the day off on a yummy note.

Melted Brie

I made a Brie and apple sandwich on a lightly toasted Nature’s Own whole wheat sandwich round using a perfectly ripe apple that I bought at The Fresh Market on Tuesday.

Brie + Apple

Ooey Gooey

Fruit and cheese are a match made in heaven.

Question of the Day

How do you get yourself to the gym on days when you’re just not feelin’ it?

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

There are so many days I ‘think’ I’m not feeling it because we wake up so early, but my husband and I usually are pretty good at motivating each other. He always tells me how good I’ll feel once I’m done!

Going to the gym first thing in the morning is the only way I can get it in. I can pretty much force myself no matter how little I want to as long as it’s before lunch, but once the afternoon hits, I know I’m a lost cause!

I always remind myself that I will almost certainly regret it if I don’t work out, but I never regret it if I do! Even if it’s just a quick 20 minutes, it’s better than nothing!

I’ve actually always been one to go to the gym AFTER work. I live in Rockland County but work in Manhatten so it’s on average an hour and 20 minute commute each way. I work the typical 9-5 day. So by the time I got home it would be around 630 and then I’d quickly change and head to the gym. I felt like I was NEVER able to get anything done and always worrying about getting my workouts in! After reading your blog and seeing that you got your workouts in BEFORE work (as others do as well) I told myself I was going to try it! I now wake up at 5 and get to my gym by 515 for an early morning workout! I love it and felt great the rest of the day!! I get home and make dinner for me and my fiance and enjoy quality time together without worrying. Just remembering it’s one less thing to check off my to do list keeps me motivated!!!!

that’s wonderful! i used to go after work too, but really prefer the mornings as well. it makes it feel like you still have a lot of “day” left after work to make a yummy dinner and spend quality time doing whatever it is you WANT to do. 🙂

    Mmmmm…brie + apple = amazing!!! Great sandwich!

I always tell myself that I just need to START a workout, and if I want to quit after 10 minutes, I can. I never want to once I get going!

I tell myself to just suck it up for 15 minutes then I can go home. Once I’m in the gym, the mood strikes. I wish I were like Michelle and could get up at 5 for a workout. But I have an extremely hard time getting up at 6:15 for work. I do have morning exerciser envy. Bigtime.

If I let my alarm go my fiance nudges me and says you’ll be upset if you don’t get up. He encourages me and that helps a lot as well.

I was tempted to not go this morning and I pushed myself to get out of bed and just get it done. I feel so much better after I go.

How do I get myself to go to the gym on unmotivated days? I read inspiring blogs- like yours! If you can get there…So can I.

Or my boyfriend drags me- he drives and comes up with the routine, so the only work I actually have to do is the exercise 😉

i love loveeeee fruit + cheese. cave-aged gruyere + apple is my favorite combo. sooooo good. i’m not typically a fan of gruyere, but cave-aged is amazing. you can find it at whole foods. it’s a hard cheese, but it melts well too. delicioso!

I take 1-2 days off per week from working out but don’t have set days for these. That way when by body is begging to rest I can. But on those days I’m just being lazzzyyy I do what you do and just convince myself to GET there. I read a quote in Runner’s World that the hardest part about getting yourself into a workout routine is getting your clothes on. I totally agree!!! The hardest part is convincing myself to get to the gym. Once I have my clothes on I’m usually fine. But yeah, light wkout days are def necessary from time to time…If not…HELLO BURNOUT!

Have a great day chica!!!!!! XOXOX

I’m interested to hear what you think of that book! I was thinking it sounds like a fun Harry Potter-esque read.

& I usually just have to literally push myself out the door & then once I get going I either get into it or make it an easy day. Usually getting dressed & putting my shoes on gets me going, but this morning I have been laying around in full gear for hours!

I LOVE just taking it easy with cardio and reading. Luckily now I have the excuse to do that for all my cardio since pregnant chickas can’t go hard. 😀 Let me know how that book is. I have been interested in it since I love Harry Potter, but worry it would just be meh and don’t want to waste my time. I can’t wait to hear more about it.

I usually just tell myself that I will feel better once I get a workout in- you know the old saying “I never go to the gym & then regret the decision.”
Oh, and I have been hearing a lot about that book lately! I might have to check it out.

I make sure that I take a rest day (Saturdays) from the gym to avoid burnout, and I try to keep my workouts interesting so that I really want to do them. If I don’t really feel like going, I usually just try to think about how good I’ll feel after I’m finished, or go and do a group ex class – I find that the hardest part is physically getting myself to the gym, and after that, if I’m in a class it’s a lot harder to leave, not to mention I’d probably feel really rude if I did!

Usually I just get myself to go and once I get there I realize I am feeling it after all. Man, 100 pages in that amount of time…I’m a REALLY slow reader so I find that impressive!

I had to read that book for college this past semester (I’m a middle grades education major), and I really liked it!

No help on the gym question. Motivation is one thing I’m really lacking in 🙁 I’m working on it, though.
