A Sequel Surprise (+ Jewelry Resetting Giveaway!)

November 18, 2015 by Julie 284 Comments

After Chase was born, my mom drove up to our home in Charlotte from Jacksonville, Florida to meet her new grandson and help us with the transition into life as new parents. As the days passed, I realized very quickly just how incredibly helpful she was, not only for her assistance with Chase but for her company and emotional support. I was tired and overwhelmed, naturally questioning everything about my role as a new mom, but having my mother there to assure me that I was doing just fine made a world of difference.

During her stay, I received an email from Sequel, a new website that offers diamond and gemstone resetting online. They asked if I had any jewelry I’d like to have reset and immediately my mom popped into my mind. I asked if they would be willing to allow me to have a piece of my grandmother’s jewelry reset as a gift to my mother.

Sequel Ring Resetting

As you may know if you read my blog this summer, we lost Mimi, my mother’s mother a week after we were all together in Raleigh for my baby shower. Her loss was (and continues to be) a hard one but whenever we remember Mimi, we cannot help but smile. When my Aunt Laurie came to meet Chase for the first time, she brought some of Mimi’s jewelry with her and left behind her beautiful diamond engagement ring for my mom.

Diamond Engagement Ring

The ring didn’t fit my mom’s hand, but she mentioned the beauty of the diamond in the ring a number of times.

When I asked her if she might like to have the diamond reset so she could wear the ring regularly, her eyes lit up! We curled up on the couch together and started browsing through Sequel for inspiration.

Sequel made everything so easy. The entire resetting process, from start to finish, was a breeze and I cannot recommend this site enough if you have a precious diamond or gemstone you would like to have reset for yourself or a loved one.

My mom and I were able to completely recreate a new piece of jewelry from my grandmother’s beautiful diamond and I absolutely love the story behind the setting my mother chose.

Diamond and Garnet Ring

In my mom’s words:

Many years ago, I received a ring from my mother’s father, PopPop. It was a garnet in a white gold setting. I absolutely loved the ring. During a Latin Club trip to Greece when I was in high school, the ring was taken from my suitcase in a hotel. I have always felt sad about losing my special ring and wanted to have a garnet ring again. This ring will have special meaning to me as it will combine Mom’s engagement ring (a reminder of the love she and Daddy shared) and a garnet – a deep red stone that I once loved from my grandfather.

Garnet and Diamond Ring

The fact that her new ring reminds her of her mother and her grandfather means so much to me and I’m so, so grateful to Sequel for allowing me to gift something so special to my incredible mother.

The setting my mom chose is clean and modern and she plans to wear it on her right ring finger.

Diamond Resetting

Resetting a diamond or gemstone through Sequel is accessible, simple and affordable (you are only charged for your setting) and the price for resetting begins at only $55. (Sequel covers the shipping, packaging, consultation, unsetting and resetting costs.)

You can browse the site for inspiration or work with a ReStylist who will provide you with inspiration and ideas for your stone. They will help you understand what metals go best with what colored stones and provide before and after images so you know what your resetting will look like ahead of time. And don’t think resetting only applies to rings! You can reset diamonds and gemstones into earrings, a bracelet or a necklace as well.

Sequel Giveaway + Discount

If you or someone you love have a diamond or gemstone you would like to have reset, I think you will like today’s giveaway! Sequel is giving away a free reset of a diamond or gemstone of up to $500.

Sequel is also offering all PBF readers 10 percent off any reset through their site. Simply mention PBFINGERS to receive your discount!

To enter this giveaway, please leave a comment on this post and tell me about the piece of jewelry you would like to have reset and provide a link to a setting you love on Sequel. Does the diamond or gemstone you’d like to have reset have a special meaning to you? How do you think you would like to have it reset? Please let me know!

I will randomly choose a winner next Friday.

Good luck!

I have a super retro diamond ring that my 16 year-old Dad bought for my 16 year-old mom in 1974, I love the diamond and would LOVE to have it reset.

My mom was forced to pawn her engagement ring when her and my dad fell on hard times after I was born. She hasn’t had an official one ever since, just a variety of bands she wears that change through the years (she refuses to do anything nice for herself!! Including buy a band or ring of any ‘value’). I’d love to have my grandmothers ring (she passed 5 years ago) reset to look like my mom’s wedding ring for her to wear. My parents have been married 45 years coming up and this would be a perfect gift!!!! Fingers crossed 🙂

What a special idea! I’d love to do this for my mom using a piece of my great grandmothers jewelry. We called her MooMoo and she had the most beautiful gemstone jewelry that sadly, cannot be worn on my mom’s tiny hands.

This is so funny, I was just talking about having my grandmother’s diamond ring re-set into another setting or into a necklace. It was a diamond ring that she gave me during my first visit back home to NY after moving to SC. I would always paint my gramcracker’s nails (I call her gramcracker, always have) and she would take her rings off so I could hold her hand and twist her finger just right so I could paint her dainty nails just perfect. Well, after I finished painting her nails I was putting her rings back on her and she told me to keep “this one”. I looked at her in shock because it was a diamond ring, after all. I thought I was too young to have a grown up diamond ring. I was 19 at the time. 🙂 I’ve had her ring 17 years and it just sits in my jewelry box. I’d love to be able to wear this beautiful diamond either in a new setting or as a necklace. It’s a piece of jewelry I will always cherish and pass to my daughter one day.
    Thank you, Julie!

My mom was suppose to inherit rings from her grandmother after graduating from college, but instead never knew they were suppose to go to her. They sat in a safe in a bank for over 50 years before she found a letter in her parent’s house stating the rings are for her. Now finally in her possession, I know it would mean a lot to her if she were able to set them and wear them. This would be such a great gift for her!

I would love to have a ring my grandmother gave me reset. Her hands are so much smaller than mine so the ring only fits on my pinky and isn’t really a ring to wear there. My grandmother means so much to me so this would be such a blessing!

My mom has a ring that she’s been holding on to for years because it doesn’t fit anyone (its huge) but it is really full of diamonds and beautiful. My mom does soo much for me, she went back to work just to help pay for my college tuition, she makes me dinners to take back to school with me so I when I’m busy with finals I don’t have to cook, and she always listens to my stories and ideas. I’d love to give back to her 🙂 I would pick something round, like the round-cut halo ring .. http://sequel.gemvara.com/jewelry/round-cut-halo-ring/your-center-stone-14k-white-gold-ring-with-diamond/135m86?mode=prerequest

Funny, this morning I was actually looking at the diamond (my birthstone!) ring my parents gave me when I was in middle school for my birthday. I used to wear it everyday for years but haven’t worn it in probably 10 years. I put it on and took and off thinking I’m just never going to wear this in its current setting. It doesn’t go with with my wedding rings and it’s just not really my current taste. I love the idea of making it into something I would wear again! I really like this bracelet setting

Oh wow. This site is so cool. I have an emerald from my great-grandmother I would love to get reset. When my great grandma passed away we were in charge of cleaning out her house. She had her imporatnt jewelry in one case, and all costume jewelry in another. We sold her costume jewelry at many tag sales, yet one ring always remain. I decided to keep the ring. I just had to. Upon further investigation, that ring that never sold, was a REAL emerald! It is sitting in my jewelry box waiting to be updated!! Good luck everyone 🙂

I would LOVE to have my mother’s wedding ring reset. Being a nurse, my mother was never able to wear her wedding ring to work. Instead, she wore a gold band that was made from melted down pieces of gold jewelry (which, might I add, included gifts from former ex-boyfriends… yikes!). Although she doesn’t work at a hospital anymore (still an RN), she still hasn’t worn her wedding ring because the diamond fell out of the prongs 10 years ago (luckily we found the stone). I wanted to wear her wedding ring as my something old at my wedding, so I got the ring fixed a couple of years back. My mother wore her ring for some time after my wedding, but she received a very special ring from my late grandmother (her mother) which she now wears on her left hand. It really is a beautiful piece and holds so many memories for my Mom. Being able to wear that piece everyday gives my mother such joy. I know my mother would wear her own wedding ring (on her right hand), if the stone were reset into something that looked more like a right hand ring versus a wedding ring from the 80s. Being able to get my mother’s wedding ring reset so that she could wear it as a right hand ring would be just oh-so perfect and super special! She would finally get to wear the diamond my father proposed to her with along with the ring from her mother, which also holds the highest of sentimental value. 🙂

My aunt was an art teacher for 20+ years & loved to wear big pieces of jewelry & different rings. She bought most of it from garage sales & estate sales. Her favorite ring had a blue stone, which we discovered, after her passing, this April, was actually a SAPPHIRE. Not just any old blue stone. She had no children of her own, so I inherited all of her jewelry, I would love to have her favorite ring reset to remember her by.

This is genius – and a beautiful story, as well. I’m certain that your mother feels incredibly honored to have pieces that represent the entire family with her at all times.

I would actually, most likely gift this to my close co-worker. Her mother passed away on Monday and she is, of course, heartbroken. As the youngest in her family, she is also the sibling that is closest to the small town where she grew up, which is about 3 hours outside of where we work in Fort Collins, Colorado. She is the kindest, most positive soul and is now in the process of transitioning bills, finishing paperwork, and everything that takes the soul out of such a dramatic loss. I’m certain that this would be a welcome surprise.

My guess would be that she would select this setting > http://sequel.gemvara.com/jewelry/round-cut-solitaire-pendant-with-accent-5mm-gem/your-center-stone-14k-white-gold-pendant-with-diamond/12dw3h?mode=prerequest . It is simple and allows the original diamond to stand out.

    Thanks for passing along!

My husband and I had been dating for 4 years, before he had to move away for his first real job after school. I still had 2 years of college left and didn’t want to transfer schools. A couple weeks before he left, he bought me a beautiful aquamarine ring in a unique east/west setting that I still cherish to this day. At the time it was meant to serve as a reminder of how much he loved me and a promise that one day we would live together again. Luckily for us, that move only lasted a year before he was back home. I wore that ring everyday we were apart. Sadly the setting didn’t protect the stone very well, and it chipped slightly on one side. I’d love to have it reset with white gold all the way around to better protect it and hide that slight imperfection. It’s something that I want to keep in our family for many years to come and pass down to our kids one day..

I am not a registered dietitian. My blog is simply a documentation of my life. The views I express are mine alone, based on my own experiences, and should not be taken as medical advice. I DO NOT post everything I eat. Though I am a certified personal trainer, the workouts I post may not be right for you.
