A Visit to the Orthodontist

July 14, 2011 by Julie 793 Comments

After working through the morning (lots of research for a freelance piece!), I was more than ready for a break.

My break came at 1 p.m., as I headed out the door to College Park Orthodontics to check in with my orthodontist to make sure everything was looking okay with my teeth following my treatment with Invisalign.

I wanted to have new retainers made before we move to Ocala, so I booked an appointment and was really looking forward to seeing my orthodontist again. I love her!

My orthodontist got married about a year before me, so I loved visiting her and chatting about everything wedding related during my Invisalign treatment. Then, a couple of months ago, she had a beautiful baby boy. She emailed me pictures and showed me more today and he is the cutest little guy!

My appointment went really well and I will have brand spankin’ new retainers in less than two weeks… in “passion pink.” Yes, I got to pick the color. And yes, I’m 26-years-old and picking the colors of my retainers and the flavors of the gooey stuff they put in your mouth to take the impressions for retainers still excites me.

If you happen to live in Orlando and are in need of a fantastic orthodontist, I highly recommend Dr. Williams. She has degrees from Boston College, Harvard and the University of Florida and is all-around awesome. She’s also offering a promo right now: If you sign up for Invisalign treatment with her before August 1, you get a $50 gift card to Whole Foods or Sports Authority. Sweet deal, huh?

She also offered to do a little giveaway on the blog!

Two readers will receive their choice of one $50 gift card to Whole Foods or Sports Authority, courtesy of College Park Orthodontics.

To enter this giveaway, simply comment on this post in one of two ways:

  • Tell me about your experience with braces. How amazing it felt when you got your braces off, how you looked like a total toolbag in junior high because you picked neon rubber bands… Share!

or

  • Tell me which celebrity you think has the best teeth. My vote is for Carrie Underwood.

I will randomly select two winners tomorrow afternoon.

Lunch

Lunch today was enjoyed en route to the orthodontist. I ate a quesadilla with apple slices and Canadian bacon in the car, so no photo was snapped.

I did snap a photo of dessert though!

After my orthodontist appointment, I stopped by a fro yo place and enjoyed a cup of white chocolate mousse, espresso, triple chocolate and Butterbeer frozen yogurt (can’t WAIT for Harry Potter tomorrow!!!) topped with peanut M&Ms, Golden Grahams, Butterfinger crumbles, yogurt pretzels, cookie dough, cheesecake and brownie bits.

The whole thing was resting in my belly within two minutes of me digging in.

And now I’m blogging away in Starbucks where I plan to spend the remainder of my afternoon.

A realtor has been showing our apartment to prospective tenants this whole week and I had to get out of there. The realtor doesn’t have a key, so I’ve had to be there for every showing and today I finally told her I’d hide her a key because I feel like I’m lying by omission as potential tenants come in and I don’t say anything about the mice. She understands how bad the situation is and I can’t believe they’re trying to rent it out when the problem is so immense.

You better believe I am asking EVERY homeowner about a history of mice before we move in somewhere in Ocala!

And I’m off!

Don’t forget to enter the giveaway! Open-mouthed smile

I had braces from 4th grade until 7th grade, complete with 2 “phases,” a hyrax (the upper jaw widener with a key that was mentioned earlier), and upper and lower block retainers (that I had twice) to correct my under bite, and lots of other random items that help everything get straight in there. It was totally worth it. I still get complemented on my teeth!

As a Boston College 2008 grad, I just got ridiculously excited when I saw that!

I had braces for 4 years, and begged to get them off before junior prom — the day before, they came off! I couldn’t stop smiling the entire night.

I wish they had Invisalign when I had braces though!

When I found out I had to get braces, I was actually really excited because I used to think they were “cool.” I used to change the colors based on seasons/holidays (I know, what was I thinking?). For Halloween, I had a mouthful of orange and black braces. YUCK.

Oh goodness, I HATED having braces. I had them on from 8th grade through 11th. It was so great to finally get them off, although I remember my teeth felt super slippery at first. I’m so glad I could not have braces in my senior pictures. It was the first school picture I took in high school where I smiled without trying to cup my lips over my braces. Yes, some interesting photos before that… lol

Holy cow, how did I miss this? Am I too late?

I had a pretty looooong relationship with orthodontia. I got a spacer in third grade, a bionator in fourth, braces at the end of fourth, aaand I had my braces for five and a half years.

I may or may not have looked like E.T. as a child.

at least my teeth are straight now, right? 😉

I had braces for FIVE years! I had awful teeth as a child! I cried when they took them off because I’d grown up with them on. Now, I’m hypersensitive about my teeth and hate the fact that I can notice when they move. I’d love to get invisilign, but my hubby thinks it’s silly!

Luckily I never had bad enough teeth to need braces as a kid, but when my wisdom teeth came in crooked they pushed a few of my teeth out of whack so I’ve been contemplating invisalign to fix them! As for celebrity teeth I think Jessica Alba and Jessica Biel have beautiful smiles!!

I was the 2nd kid in my elementary school to have braces. When I got them the 1st kid that had them gave me a button that said ‘Smile! I have braces!’ It made me feel like it was okay not like I was a freak. It was a super sweet gesture and I passed the button on to the next person when they got braces.

I had braces in my freshman and sophomore year. I was so sad getting them on for the second time because it seemed like everyone else was gettting them off. But, I was a happy bear when they came off and I still wear my retainer everynight so I do not have to endure that any more 🙂

I’ve had about $13,000 worth of metal on my teeth over the years. I started in 3rd grade with spacers and a permanent retainer, then switched to full braces in 5th grade. When I finally got those suckers off the summer before 8th grade, I felt so free! 🙂 Until I realized I would be wearing retainers for the rest of my life. Luckily I only have to wear them at night now. 🙂 I get compliments on my teeth a lot, so I guess it was worth it!

I had braces and glasses at the same time. Big round glasses circa 1993. Major dork alert. Thank goodness for straight teeth and contact lenses now though! 🙂

Ah, yes..braces in junior high was the best! *eyeroll* I even had head gear that I had to wear at night, but my ‘new’ teeth were worth all of that torture. The feeling of getting my braces off were like taking off your bra at the end of a long day…freedom! HA

I still wear a retainer at night–and it’s pink and sparkly. 🙂 I’m with you on Carrie Underwood. She also has the best legs, in my opinion.

I actually didn’t mind having braces at all or the retainer, because it really helped my teeth/smile look prettier. I wore my retainer up until a year or two ago. My husband always complained that it was nasty, but I liked that it kept my teeth straight. Then my dog ate my retainer! And now my teeth have slowly moved and are not perfectly straight anymore. I don’t know what I can do about it.

Got my braces off at the end of last year, so spent senior year brace free and it was amazing! I really don’t mind the retainer at all, because for all special occasions I can take it out, and it does not bother me at all during the night. So actually … pretty good experience! My teeth have no moved and I feel pretty confident they look great 🙂

I was all about the silver – the clear braces got dirty and the colored ones were tacky.
