A Visit to the Orthodontist

July 14, 2011 by Julie 793 Comments

After working through the morning (lots of research for a freelance piece!), I was more than ready for a break.

My break came at 1 p.m., as I headed out the door to College Park Orthodontics to check in with my orthodontist to make sure everything was looking okay with my teeth following my treatment with Invisalign.

college park orthodontics 001

I wanted to have new retainers made before we move to Ocala, so I booked an appointment and was really looking forward to seeing my orthodontist again. I love her!

My orthodontist got married about a year before me, so I loved visiting her and chatting about everything wedding related during my Invisalign treatment. Then, a couple of months ago, she had a beautiful baby boy. She emailed me pictures and showed me more today and he is the cutest little guy!

My appointment went really well and I will have brand spankin’ new retainers in less than two weeks… in “passion pink.” Yes, I got to pick the color. And yes, I’m 26-years-old and picking the colors of my retainers and the flavors of the gooey stuff they put in your mouth to take the impressions for retainers still excites me.

If you happen to live in Orlando and are in need of a fantastic orthodontist, I highly recommend Dr. Williams. She has degrees from Boston College, Harvard and the University of Florida and is all-around awesome. She’s also offering a promo right now: If you sign up for Invisalign treatment with her before August 1, you get a $50 gift card to Whole Foods or Sports Authority. Sweet deal, huh?

She also offered to do a little giveaway on the blog!

Two readers will receive their choice of one $50 gift card to Whole Foods or Sports Authority, courtesy of College Park Orthodontics.

To enter this giveaway, simply comment on this post in one of two ways:

  • Tell me about your experience with braces. How amazing it felt when you got your braces off, how you looked like a total toolbag in junior high because you picked neon rubber bands… Share!

or

  • Tell me which celebrity you think has the best teeth. My vote is for Carrie Underwood.

I will randomly select two winners tomorrow afternoon.

Lunch

Lunch today was enjoyed en route to the orthodontist. I ate a quesadilla with apple slices and Canadian bacon in the car, so no photo was snapped.

I did snap a photo of dessert though!

college park orthodontics 002

After my orthodontist appointment, I stopped by a fro yo place and enjoyed a cup of white chocolate mousse, espresso, triple chocolate and Butterbeer frozen yogurt (can’t WAIT for Harry Potter tomorrow!!!) topped with peanut M&Ms, Golden Grahams, Butterfinger crumbles, yogurt pretzels, cookie dough, cheesecake and brownie bits.

The whole thing was resting in my belly within two minutes of me digging in.

And now I’m blogging away in Starbucks where I plan to spend the remainder of my afternoon.

college park orthodontics 004

A realtor has been showing our apartment to prospective tenants this whole week and I had to get out of there. The realtor doesn’t have a key, so I’ve had to be there for every showing and today I finally told her I’d hide her a key because I feel like I’m lying by omission as potential tenants come in and I don’t say anything about the mice. She understands how bad the situation is and I can’t believe they’re trying to rent it out when the problem is so immense.

You better believe I am asking EVERY homeowner about a history of mice before we move in somewhere in Ocala!

And I’m off!

Don’t forget to enter the giveaway! Open-mouthed smile

I had braces when they were ‘cool’ (seriously, did people really want them in 7th grade?!) I had them for 2 year and shamefully I picked colored bands throughout most of my time with them. I mean really, who needs color ON their teeth? Ick! 🙂

I wore braces in high school for a couple years. I definately had the fun colored bands and a retainer that I never really wore most of the time!

Ugh, I had braces when I was in college! Like, real braces… not Invisalign! I think you definitely made the right choice between the two of us! I got them off during January of my senior year, which was SO awesome… What a great feeling! : )

I had braces for a little less than three years, but I had a palate expander before that, and my mom would have to reach inside my mouth every night before bed, fumble around with a key, and crank the expander back until we heard a click. Believe me, this was ever so fun. I ended up with a lovely gap between my teeth and then had to have around 5 teeth extracted with complications–oh joy. Luckily my braces weren’t quite as bad as all that, and my teeth look wonderful now!

Had to go through the whole braces experience my freshman year of high school! I of course experienced the ‘fun’ of regular tightenings, and getting food stuck in my braces. But now I am enjoying perfectly straight teeth, no TMJ, and 8 years later am still faithfully wearing my retainer!! 🙂

I can’t imagine living with mice. When I was in grad school in Gainesville, our house was in a wooded area, and we ended up with a lot of cockroaches. It was nasty. And one time when I came home, there was a snake in the kitchen!!! He slithered under the stove when I turned on the light. Needless to say, I didn’t return home until someone else got rid of him. Yuck!

OMG I hated braces. My teeth were so crooked, there was one tooth that they couldn’t even get a bracket on and had to wait until the others moved out of the way! 10 years later, I still wear my retainers 2-3 days a week because I’m not doing that again!

My favorite part of having braces were the cheesy colored bands for holidays. My least favorite part was when the “special” rubber bands decided to go flying out of your mouth when talking…as you can tell I was super cool in junior high 😉

I also were an adult retainer now and I made sure that I got to pick my color too…flashy neon green…with a little bit of sparkle lol

I actually had braces twice when I was younger! The first time, I didn’t wear my retainer regularly so they put them back on again. It was painful at times, but I did always LOVE picking out new colors for the rubber bands at each appointment! I’d like to say that I was better at wearing my retainer the second time around, but I still have two crooked teeth!

On a side note: I went to an amusement park with my family (I was about 10 or 11) and it was one of those parks where the characters walk around pretending to be from about 1,000 years ago. Anywho-one of the characters definitely yelled at me and was all “WHAT IS THAT STRANGE CONTRAPTION IN YOUR MOUTH! AWAY YE SCOUNDREL!” It was just a little bit embarrassing ;o)

I am so weird because I actually loved having braces. Don’t get me wrong, I was more than ready to get them off after 22 months, but I remember being soooooo excited the day I got my braces. I also loved going every month because everyone in the office was so nice and fun to talk to. I also got to get new colors (although I chose metallic blue almost every time).

Ok, so I had braces when I was in middle school. I was so excited because unlike most people who have to have them on for years, I only had them for 10 months. Well I had been counting down the days to get my braces off and guess what… my orthodontist died! Isn’t that horrible? As if that wasn’t bad enough, they had no one to take off my braces. So finally they had some temp guy come in and he took them off, but he did it wrong and didn’t take off the cement right? So not only was it incredibly painful but it took me about 5 years for them to work on the cement at every dentist appt. Horrible. Oh and there was never any follow-up so I have no idea about the retainer thing. Fingers crossed that my teeth don’t shift!!

Haha sorry for the long story! In other notes, that fro yo looks amazing! And I can’t believe that your realator isn’t telling people about the mice!! That’s horrible!

I’d totally get sparkly pink retainers/cases if I got braces again 🙂

I had braces for two years in 4th grade and, lucky for me, it was still cool to have braces at that age – but it was pretty painful. I loved when I got them off and refused to get the second round that I was supposed to – luckily my teeth are still pretty straight!

I think you should post a photo of a mouse on your refrigerator and write “Future Roomie” on it 🙂 …I feel so bad for whoever rents it!

I got braces when I was in third grade. Then they realized my mouth was too small for any major changes to happen. So they gave me retainers, I threw them away twice at school during lunch (by accident lol) and my dad went through the dumpster at school TWICE! They then gave me permanent retainers which I liked much more. I had them until 8th grade when I finally got braces.

In ninth grade they took them off! they were soooo smooth!! I got regular retainers since I was much older. I never threw them out once :).. but I stopped wearing them and now my bottom teeth aren’t that straight :/

    I want invisalign now!!

    btw keep wearin’ those retainers!!!

Ugh! Braces! I had them forever. Seriously. I got them put on in 3rd grade (they were only on my two front teeth) and didn’t get completely rid of them until the end of 9th grade. They were taken off for six months in 7th grade due to being overcorrected.

But if braces were bad, headgear was SO MUCH WORSE. My freshman year, my dad let two senior boys (who were doing work on the farm) come flip my mattress over while I slept on it and they saw the headgear. It was mortifying. Sounds like Invisalign would have been much less detrimental to my mental health.

When I was in elementary school, I actually WANTED braces. I would straighten out paper clips and place them over my teeth so it looked like I had (really horrible) braces. No idea what was going on in my head at the time…

Then when I actually ended up having to get in junior high school, I despised them. Especially the tiny rubber bands that I was supposed to wear. I had more fun flinging them at things.

Thank goodness that is all in the past!
