All Aboard the Downton Abbey Train

February 19, 2013 by Julie 123 Comments

A couple of weeks ago when I wrote a blog post explaining how Ryan and I were considering giving up cable, many of you commented to tell me about free alternatives that we could use to watch our favorite shows.

While we have agreed to cancel cable beginning in March, we plan to get NetFlix and hope to use the internet to stream some of our favorite shows. Our goal is to stop using television as a default form of entertainment and limit TV-watching to movies and the small handful of shows we actually enjoy together.

Last night, I discovered that Amazon Prime members can stream Downton Abbey for free!

Downton Abbey

This is fantastic news considering the fact that my mom, grandma, sister and I got way too invested in the show over the weekend. I know I’ve hopped on the Downton Abbey train a little late, but I am officially hooked and told Ryan it’s the best show I’ve seen in a long time.

Breakfast

Breakfast this morning was just peachy!

nectarine

Err… nectarine-y.

Along with my nectarine, I had a bowl of scrambled eggs made with shredded cheese, chopped peppers and broccoli.

Plus a can of La Croix coconut sparkling water on the side.

Question of the Morning

  • Have you ever watched Downton Abbey? What did you think?

I actually missed the very first episode, but my mom and grandma filled me in, and now I’m hooked! The Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) is a hoot!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

Love Downton Abbey! And Maggie Smith is my favorite. We’ve never had cable, and I don’t miss it. For a while we had Netflix, but when we realized we could use our amazon prime membership to stream shows & movies we stopped using Netflix. Amazon’s selection of instant shows is more limited than Netflix, but we’re hoping as they gain more market share they’ll add more shows.

I just decided to start watching it this season and watched all of the first 2 seasons while I had the flu in January so that I was caught up. I agree it is the best show I’ve seen in a while. It is actually the only show that I watch(ed) regularly! I can’t believe that it doesn’t start up again until next January :(. And the season finale…well, I won’t spoil it, but I was mad!!

We got rid of cable after findin ourselves watching one channel – nick jr. My husband set up the antenna to get the local channels. Believe it or not we get better picture and all of the local stations (NBC and ABC etc). We have Apple TV to use our Netflix and Hulu. Hulu plus cost us 7.99 a month and we watch it the most. I watched all of Dowton Abbey this weekend after reading your acknowledge note for the show… I got hooked an couldn’t stop. We only pay for Internet 🙂 good luck!

If you haven’t watched the spoof by Jimmy Fallon “Dowton Sixby”, you need to watch the 4 episodes. You will crack up! They’re all available on youtube. enjoy! 🙂

I LOVE Downton Abbey. It took me a little while to start watching it, too, but once I started, I was completely hooked. It’s so well done, and I love the character development. Plus the beautiful costumes, set, and scenery! I agree – Maggie Smith is so hilarious. Also, that nectarine looks divine – I’m drooling!!
