Pitiful little cone dog is doing quite well!
Doesn’t she look like the most depressed dog in the universe?
I picked Sadie up at the vet at 3:30 p.m. yesterday and she was clearly still feeling the drugs. Her eyes were incredibly droopy and she was walking around the exam room in a daze.
When Sadie and I are reunited after even five minutes apart, I am usually greeted with a body slam and excessive love. Yesterday she simply walked up to me, wagged her tail when I spoke to her and then paced around, obviously quite out of it.
For a few hours her walk was more of a grapevine than an actual walk which was very amusing. It was odd to see such a hyperactive dog act so calm.
Now, about the cone.
Sadie is supposed to wear it for 10 days. Yes, 10 days.
The vet said that we could take it off of her if we’re there to monitor her, which is great news. Sadie is also surprisingly good about leaving stiches alone (she didn’t mess with her stitches at all when she was spayed), so we’re hoping to give her some cone relief when we can closely watch her. (I am also looking into the inflatable collars that a few of you recommended.)
One thing that drives Sadie crazy about the cone? It reflects light. Sadie is an expert shadow and light hunter and I had to laugh when we arrived home and the cone reflected the light coming in our living room window. Sadie immediately assumed her hunting position to stalk the light in her highly medicated state.
Sadie spent the rest of the night pacing around the house in a daze. I couldn’t get her to sit down and relax and every time I got up to go somewhere, she’d follow slowly behind, knocking into things with her cone. She is still getting used to the width of the cone and I’ll randomly hear a “bang” from another room as she runs into walls, chairs and other obstacles.
Last night, she kept banging into the couch and coffee table when she’d try to squeeze in between the two like she typically does without any issues.
It was so pathetic, sweet and funny at the same time. She got lots of love last night even if she didn’t realize it at the time.
Breakfast
Breakfast this morning included scrambled eggs with chicken sausage and spinach.
Simple and delicious.

Poor Sadie! I have a 9 month old Vizsla, and she was spayed last week. She has been a cone head too, but we have found that the plastic one is awful and she hates it. Instead, we went to Petco and bought her a soft cone. She likes it MUCH better and it makes it way easier for her to sleep or curl up on the couch with us.

Omigosh usually Sadie is so happy and excited in your pics and in these she just looks so sad!! Poor girl!! Hope you figure out a solution for the cone soon!
Haha, poor Sadie! Dogs are never more pitiful than when they have cones on their heads. And they totally know you’re laughing at them too. Good luck keeping it on for 10 days!
Yes, Elizabeth is right on! They also sell doggy pj’s that you can put on your pooch to keep them from getting to any stitches. When my pup Bubby had his “Big boy” surgery, the pj’s were a life saver because he looked pitiful with the cone of shame on and didn’t want to move with it on!
Please don’t get mad for this! But I was relieved when you yourself said it’s sad but funny because it was making me go “awww” the whole time, but she just looks too darn cute and funny like that! 😀 I’m really glad she’s well, Julie!
oh believe me, i was cracking up yesterday!! it’s pitiful but funny all at once. she’s doing really well today which makes me feel less guilty about laughing. 🙂
10 days?! I’m such a sucker for my puppies…I know I wouldn’t last 10 days eventhough it is best for them! Good luck staying strong 🙂

Awwww poor Sadie!
When my dog had major eye surgery he had to wear his cone for almost 3 months and had his eye stitched shut. He could get around the house pretty slowly and needed help getting up and down stairs, the couch and bed. It broke my hear to see him so miserable. When that cone came off he almost didn’t know what to do!

My puppy at eye surgery on both eyes and ended up having to wear one of those for a month! He was pretty miserable although it did create some funny memories. We called it his “windshield” and we’d have to clean it all the time cause it get so icky! He would go to smell something and stick his cone directly in the ground. It was a sad but funny sight!

Interesting the cone is clear…my dog had a white one. Mine didn’t mess with stritches either, so I took it off at night, I felt way too bad!!!
My little westie had a minature cone for a while…I felt so sorry for her! Dogs just have a way of pulling at the heart strings! I bet you won’t last the 10 days!! We gave in after about 3!
I am so glad you had the lumps removed. We had a bassett beagle that got a lump on her belly. It stayed about the size of a quarter for a long time. Then it turned into a golf ball. Once it got that large, it started growing quickly. The vet thought it was a calcium deposit. By the time we tried to have it removed, it had branched out and wrapped around most of her major organs and it had turned cancerous. We lost her 3 years ago. It was very sad. You can’t just assume things will be okay. Nip them in the bud while small & insignificant!! Poor Sadie does look a little forlorn and out of it. But at least she’ll be back to normal in a few days.

when my dog was neutered, he had to wear the cone for a long time…he seemed depressed at first, but after a few days, he got used to it and would plow through like normal, cone and all…almost like it wasn’t there…until he couldn’t fit through certain places. lol.
For some reason my dog (a vizsla mix) has decided he LOVES his cone. Everytime he sees it his tail starts wagging and he gets excited to put it on. 🙂 He also has really good depth perception in it so he doesn’t bump into anything!
Awww doesn’t it break your heart! Sadie doesn’t even look like herself- I’m sure in no time she’ll be up and crazy again.

Awe bless her heart!! She will be ok with the cone! I think it’s harder for us than them. I loved the inflatable cone, until my dog got out of it (its Velcro so if she rolled the wrong way it came off) and then she bit a whole in it. Lovely. But she loved using it as a pillow.

I’m a veteran doggy mom so I know the cone issues well . . . don’t hestitate to rearrange things a bit – make large openings between furniture, slide coffee table out of the way. And don’t underestimate the healing process and itching . . . we had a dog who we thought would be fine without the cone, she ate thru stitches/ligaments/tendons and her leg was never the same – I know, gross, but true. Our 16 year old “puppy” just suffered an ailment that has left him with stroke like symptoms. He can’t walk without falling over, has to be carried outside to do his business – and it has been just terrible. We have throw rugs all over the hard wood floors and pillows blocking anything he could fall into. My house looks ridiculous but I would do anything for him. It’ll probably take about a month for him to recover – and we’re exhausted, but I’m so happy it wasn’t a real “stroke”. Give your puppy lots of love – as I know you do – and try not to laugh at her . . . they know! Take care you guys!
Seeing doggies with cones is one of the saddest things! Hope she heals quickly.
