Corn Maze and Pumpkin Fun

October 16, 2011 by Julie 58 Comments

Today we got our Halloween pumpkin!

corn maze 037

Isn’t it a good one?

I’m still not sure what design we’ll carve this year (Sadie’s face), but I think that the long shape of the pumpkin will be ideal for carving.

We bought the pumpkin from Timberline Farm after spending the morning exploring the corn maze, petting zoo and farmer’s market with my father-in-law.

corn maze 035

corn maze 017

When we arrived at Timberline Farm, we made a beeline for the corn maze because we weren’t sure how long it would take to complete. Ryan have I have been to a corn maze that took nearly two hours to navigate before, but this one was quite simple and we were in and out in under 15 minutes.

corn maze 018

corn maze 020

Ryan’s dad was the line leader and picked all the right turns to get us out.

corn maze 021

Success!

Since the corn maze took no time at all, we went back in the maze, and Ryan led the way back out of the entrance. Twice the fun!

Ten points to the person that can tell me what this is at first glance!

corn maze 024

Any guesses?

Here’s a hint…

corn maze 026

Pig snout!

The pigs were absolutely adorable. When we went to the farmer’s market stand to offer up our $.10 to buy some “pig food,” I was surprised when they handed us fresh tomatoes right out of one of the baskets they were selling to the people! Love that.

corn maze 028

That little pig with its big pig smile reminded me of Babe! La, la, la!

The pigs loved the tomatoes and we had a great time watching them smoosh the tomatoes so the juice ran down their faces.

corn maze 030

corn maze 032

We made sure to give attention to the other adorable animals as well before heading to the pumpkin patch.

corn maze 025

corn maze 027

(I took that bunny picture for you, Paula. Maybe a boyfriend for Bunnypants/ a substitute for the stuffed cow?)

Before we left the farm, I bought the teeniest little apple on the planet.

corn maze 036

It was a little bigger than a plum and so sweet!

Lunch

When we arrived back home, it was lunchtime.

Ryan manned the grill while I prepared some veggies on the stovetop.

corn maze 038

Chicken sausage + sautéed squash and onion + a pickle for me!

corn maze 041

During lunch we enjoyed the last bit of time we had with Ryan’s dad before he headed back home. It was sad to see him go!

Fall Baking

Once we said our goodbyes, it was time for some fall baking.

corn maze 047

When Ryan’s mom came to visit a couple weeks ago, she gave us an autumn sugar cookie kit, and since we got our pumpkin earlier in the day, I figured we would keep the festive fall feelings alive and bake some pumpkin and leaf sugar cookies.

Easier said than done…

corn maze 044

Even after adequately flouring the countertops, the dough was still super sticky and when we tried to cut out the shapes, they wanted to stick to the counter.

Check out our sad pumpkins and single leaf:

corn maze 045

Pathetic.

After cutting out those three cookies, we didn’t bother using the cutouts for the remaining dough.

corn maze 048

Still tasty in the end!

Now guess how many of those cookies are left?

None.

Great Sunday! Smile

Those pigs are seriously adorable! I’ve wanted a pet pig forever…but apparently they aren’t allowed in suburban homes? Weird.

Um, do you ship cookies, by chance?!

Hey Joelle! I grew up in Northern VA, and we always went to Cox Farm when we were young. But you’re so right, there are a decent amount of places to go. I miss it there. Enjoy!

The same thing happens to me when I make shortbread cookies! You gotta use parchment paper. It will be your new best friend. Also, I put the rolled dough in the freezer to chill it before I cut out the shapes. This makes it a little sturdier and easier to pop out of the cookie-cutters. I no longer hate my life when I am making Christmas cookies 🙂

I love that little piggy. I love doing fun festive fall (alliteration much?) things like the pumpkin patch shenanigans and apple picking! So much fun.

you roll out the dough on parchment paper? i need to try your tips!! i was really frustrated!

        October 16, 2011 at 6:50 pm

yep, I actually roll the dough between two pieces of parchment paper because I find that my shortbread sticks to everything…including the counter and my non-stick roller, even if I use an entire bag of flour.

I was getting so frustrated, and I can’t even describe the difference it makes. The dough doesn’t stick to the parchment paper at all. Then I throw just the dough in the freezer for like 10 minutes before doing the cookie-cutter thang. It is beautiful!

Where’s the icing on those cookies?! Sugar cookies are only good with icing in my opinion 😉

I love going to pumpkin patches–one time we got super lost in a corn maze, and I was so antsy. so I don’t love them….maybe I am seriously pathetic when it comes to patience?? haha.

Fun! We’re planning to carve a pumpkin sometime this week. Still need to get one though…

One of the things I loved about living in Virginia was all of the fall activities — and the leaves changing! We had the best apple cider at an event called “Pumpkinville”… we also went on a hayride and jumped in straw. Loved it.

I’d like to try a corn maze. We tried a mirror maze up in Niagara Falls a few years ago and it wasn’t much fun at all. I got a bit dizzy and nauseous because of all of the different mirrors and Sheila started getting worried that we weren’t ever going to be able to find our way out!

We went raspberry picking for Sheila’s birthday and the farmers had 3 adorable Border Collies on site with which people could play. Problem was…they didn’t have any biscuits or treats to give them, and all of the toys that they had were on the other side of the fence! Got some great pics though.
