Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

December 6, 2010 by Julie 35 Comments

Credit is surely deserved by northerners who work out in frigid temperatures!

Sister Sadie Bearing the Cold

One question I get a lot from blog readers is how I wake up so early to work out. (Here are my tips on how to work out in the morning, just in case you’re interested. 😀 ) I must say I think it is 10 billion times easier to workout at 5:30 a.m. than it is to peel myself out of a warm, comfy bed when it is flippin’ freeeezing outside.

You need some serious motivation to get out of a warm bed and trudge outside through the cold to the gym. I only have to fight the cold for a few months. Some of you guys are dealing with crazy wind chills the majority of the year. You deserve a lot of credit for gettin’ your booty to the gym and I tip my hat to you!

I’m sure you probably already ascertained that it’s pretty darn cold in Orlando this morning.

I wore pants + a tank top + two hoodies + a fleece jacket on my morning walk with Sadie and was still cold.

Even though I was chilly, I wasn’t in the mood for a hot breakfast. Fresh fruit was callin’ my name, so I prepared a yogurt bowl that included McIntosh apple slices, blueberries and whole grain cereal.

Chilly Breakfast for a Chilly Morning

It was cold, crunchy and helped me start my day on a good note!

Apple + Blubes + Cereal + Yog

On the side I enjoyed a banana.

Monday Morning Meal

I ate my breakfast after BodyPump and 25 minutes of light cardio on the elliptical.

I spent my time on the elliptical chatting to a woman I frequently see at the gym who got married earlier this year. She gave me a neat idea for our wedding album! She included her vows and special readings from her wedding ceremony in her album to help take her back to her ceremony and the meaning of their wedding every time she and her husband flip through the photographs. Love that idea! 😀

Now I gotta jet. It’s time to w-o-r-k!

Enjoy your day!

I like having snow but I think it would be much easier to get my butt out of bed and to the gym if I lived in Florida instead of Boston. Love the pic of Sister Sadie haha!

Two hoodies! It’s a cold walk to the gym, especially here in Boston, but I love that I get an hour or so of getting my body temperature up and sweating, since the rest of the day is just cooold.

That photo of Sadie is so cute! I find that knowing you’ve got a delicious breakfast to look forward to is pretty good motivation to get me to the gym. Have a great day Julie ! 🙂

it’s pretty chilly where i am, and it makes it worse that i left my iPod in the car after work last night. i’m a college student and i live on campus, so i’ll just call the trek to my car a detour on my walk to the gym. it’s an extra warm up. 😉

I grew up in New England and I still am shocked by the cold each winter. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the bone-chilling cold that rips through your body at 10 degrees.

1)I know this is on the wrong post, but the next time you head to jacksonville, if there is a special occasion, you MUST try restaurant medure. I had one of the best meals of my LIFE there, and though it isn’t cheap, you get AMAZING bang for your buck!

2)i HATE cold weather!! I’m a california girl and will never get used to nyc winters!

Living in Boston it is definitely harder to get workout motivation in the winter – dark and freezing cold is just not very inviting! But I find when I get into a routine it’s easier – I think about how awesome I’ll feel after I battle the cold and I’m in the warm shower…that usually gets me up and going! (And the fact that I seriously dislike working out later in the day)

I remember trudging to the gym at 5:15 every morning last year for cardio when it was -40 outside. NOT fun! I’d kill for your kind of “cold weather” lol

What time do you usually go to bed at night? That is always my biggest problem with getting up to work out in the morning – I go to sleep way too late! I’m working on it though!

i try to be in bed by 10 on weeknights. ryan and i will often end up talking for a while after we get into bed, but i’d say that 90% of the time we’re in bed by 10.

I love the cold! Good thing since I live in upstate NY. I ran 10 miles yesterday morning, it was 21 degrees when I started and 25 when I was done. Its so invigorating! And running with snow falling around you-just like being in a christmas card picture!

I love all of your Sadie pictures. 🙂 She is so adorable!
You actually inspired me to begin a morning workout routine, and let me tell you it’s THE BEST! I love being able to say that I have already gotten my daily sweat on and done by 8 am. It’s also a great start to every day.

This morning at the gym I saw on the news that a major cold front was sweeping all the way to Florida, and I thought of you actually and your daily walk with Sadie!
Looks like you were feeling some of the effects this morning!

This morning, I opted for staying in bed. For me, the hard thing to do is motivate myself to stay in bed, and not torture myself,as I did too often.
That’s a really nice idea for the album!

Getting out of bed early in the morning sucks, ESPECIALLY when it’s cold out! It’s gonna be tough to wrench myself out of the comfy covers tomorrow and Thursday, but I’m SO STOKED not to have early classes next semester so that I can take my time getting up and at ’em!

Agreed! It’s so, SO much easier working out 1st thing in the morning. Even waiting a few hours if I have happen to have a super-early class makes a huge difference.

Oh, and HOW those people run in the snow is beyond me. If it’s below 40* I’m indoors. 😛

Sadie is ADORABLE in that photo! I just had to put my dog down and so seeing such a cute photo just melts my heart! 🙂 …As for the comment about northerners getting to the gym despite the cold – yes it is AWFUL trying to get going when it is so cold out. Wisconsin is not the ideal place to live when you are an exercise addict! 🙂 Love your blog! It has become my bible – especially during boring lectures!

I have gone out in -40 (celcius, but I think at that temperature the farenheit is the same) to work out. It involved wearing long johns under my sweats, then changing at the gym. And letting my car warm up for 20 minutes beforehand. But I did it!

You seem pretty crafty so you might totally DIY the whole thing, but if you’re looking for a photobook company I was really happy with Picaboo. They offer lay-flat books, which is nice. Ours turned out wonderfully! I did larger 8×11 albums for us and then 6×8 for the parents.

Living in New England definitely has it’s downfalls with the FREEZING weather! I’m a college student and just walking from my dorm to class can be tough with this weather…let alone going out for a run! I swear everybody thinks I’m crazy! Recently the beginning of my runs have been accompanied by teary eyes due to the cold weather! But, I still love it!

I love your blog! I some how stumbled upon it a couple months ago and am a fan! I am obsessed with peanut butter as well (and so are 2 of my sisters).
Our go-to PB is Teddy’s all Natural! It’s only found in NE (as far as we know), and every couple months I need to send my sister a PB care package to San Diego!
