Little Things, Big Joy

March 11, 2013 by Julie 123 Comments

With a ton of leftovers remaining from yesterday’s crock pot breakfast casserole, lunch today was a no-brainer.

Crock Pot Breakfast Casserole

I reheated the breakfast casserole and enjoyed it with a bowl of sliced strawberries.

And now I’m officially burnt out on crock pot breakfast casserole.

Little Things, Big Joy

Over the weekend, as I snacked on a bowl of Corn Pops, I thought to myself, “It’s kind of ridiculous how much joy I get out of snacking on this simple, sugary bowl of cereal.”

The cereal reminds me of snacking on Corn Pops as a child and transports me back to Saturday mornings spent watching Doug with my sister.

I then started to think about other little things that bring me a surprising amount of joy and thought it might be fun to hear what seemingly small, silly things make you guys oddly happy, too!

A few little things that bring me an odd amount of joy:

  • Sadie’s tail-tucked run: I’m not sure if this is something all dogs do when they’re feeling particularly nutty, but whenever Sadie’s energy is absolutely off the wall, she runs around our backyard in circles with her tail tucked underneath her body. Ryan and I always laugh when the tail-tucked run comes out to play because we know she’s feeling extra spastic.

  • Warm, cozy pajamas: Perhaps it’s because I live in Florida and am only able to wear winter pajamas to bed for a month or so out of the year, but extra-warm pjs make me feel so cozy and happy!

  • Ridiculous group texts: I love it when a group text with friends spirals out of control and becomes completely ridiculous and hilarious. (Speaking of funny texts, this Cat Facts text I saw on Pinterest is too funny not to share.)
  • Fun socks: There’s something so fun about wearing goofy socks. It’s a simple joy, but wearing heart socks on Valentine’s Day or pumpkin socks on Halloween makes me smile.
  • Evening walks with Ryan and Sadie: Walking around the neighborhood with Ryan and Sadie at the end of the day is one of my favorite simple activities. It gives us a chance to catch up, vent, laugh and enjoy some time outside.
  • A cappella music: I listen to music all day long and love a wide variety of music, but I am constantly amazed at the unbelievable talent of a cappella groups like Straight No Chaser and Pentatonix. And this video by Bobby McFerrin is freakin’ awesome. <—Watch it!

  • Gel pens: As someone who takes a lot of notes for my freelance work, I absolutely love a good gel pen. If the gel pen writes in a fun color, that’s all the better!
  • Visiting the library: I used to visit the Palatine Public Library regularly when I was growing up and my love for libraries has stayed with me as an adult. I love browsing for a new book and enjoy the quiet, warm atmosphere. (Bonus points if I can check out the book I want to read immediately and don’t have to wait on a long wait list!)
  • Adorable Instagram pictures: My favorite Instagram account to follow is Vizslas of Instagram because adorable pictures of vizslas always make me smile. Another fun Instagram account? Sam Has Eyebrows. The cat has eyebrows and it just cracks me up.

The other day I heard Kenny Chesney’s “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” and it made me giggle. If you’re in a crummy mood it’s a good picker upper!

My dog does circles around our back yard with her tail tucked, too! It’s HILARIOUS! It just stinks that it tears the yard up, haha. Fun socks- yes! Childhood cereal- Cinnamon Toast Crunch baby! And I totally remember Doug… good clean TV for kids.

    1. just about everything my horses do — like coming to the gate to meet me, curling their necks around me, or galloping around the field with tail and mane flying.
    2. when my little dog, Barnaby, curls up under the piano bench while I practice.
    3. a really good yoga class
    4. crocus shoots poking through the snow
    5. a really good, newsy letter or email.

I’m going to have to go with the Pampered Chef Cut N Seal. It cuts the crust off my PB&Js and seals in all the good stuff. Best of all, my sandwiches look totally cute! 🙂

You know in the movie House Bunny how Anna Farris repeats the person she meets name in that weird growly voice? Well my 11 month old has started saying “momma” like that and I just think it is the funniest thing in the world!

You have probably already seen this but you need to read the review on the gel; pens for her on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/BIC-Cristal-1-0mm-Black-MSLP101-Blk/dp/B004F9QBCS/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1363098707&sr=8-14&keywords=gel+pen+for+women.

That cat is hilarious! I love Instagram and am slowly becoming more and more obsessed with it. I also love a good gel pen! Our 3 year old Shih Tzu pup , Sammy, is scary smart. He knows all of the different names of his toys and always retrieves the correct one. And he and my husband literally make-out (I think he loves the dog more than me) 🙂 But Sammy totally licks my husband all over the mouth (it’s gross and I get annoyed here and there). lol. And if my husband is holding him up and turns his face away for 1 second, Sammy goes insane and makes motions with his paws as if he’s orchestrating music and cries until my husband gives in again. It’s adorable and hilarious every time. I think if we all just stop and smell the coffee here and there, life really is just full of great Joy! 🙂

The sound of the car door closing and my fiance coming through the gate at the end of a work day. It always makes me hapy to know he’s home!
I had the same feeling growing up when I’d hear the garage door open and I knew my mom was home 🙂

That’s so sweet! – abandonment issues aside 🙂

I love a capella singing! Primarily because I can’t hold a tune to save my life! It has never stopped me trying tho (… I have very understanding neighbours…).

The smell of rain and freshly mowed lawn gives me great pleasure. And the way my dog bolts hell-for-leather to the gate and then patiently waits to be leashed makes me smile 🙂

Rebekah Shoop, whoever you are; I want to be your friend 🙂

Oh I love me a good, colorful pen! I find joy in crossing things off my to-do list and walking around barefoot in the summertime (something I get to do too little living in the midwest). Guess it’s like the reverse of your PJ pants thing!

I have a BOXER with a docked tail (we call it her nubbie) and one of my favorite things about her is that she gets so stinkin excited when I get home from work and she tucks her nubbie under and runs around and around in circles and snorts until I pay attention to her and rub her belly..Love her!

My Sadie does the exact same thing! When we brought her home from the pound after adopting her, she did the tuck-her-tail-under-her-butt and then proceeded to tear around our living room knocking down everything in her wake. My fiance and I just stared in stunned silence until her tirade was over. We both had to have been thinking, “what did we just get ourselves into?”
She still does it every once in a while when she is feeling extra excited. I even catch her doing it when she is alone in the back yard and no one is watching. She’s whacko!
