Moving Weekend

September 8, 2014 by Julie 94 Comments

We are officially all moved into our new house!

Moving_thumb.jpg

I wish I had a fun weekend recap to share with you, but unless you want to see tons of pictures of boxes, protective wrapping paper, miscellaneous junk and stuff splayed out all over every table and countertop in our house, I don’t have much!

LivingRoomColorScheme.jpg Unpacking.jpg

The movers arrived later than expected on Friday (around 11 a.m.) but they worked like crazy and had everything in our new house by 6:30 p.m. I spent the entire day helping with the move and unpacking. I didn’t sit down or take a break until close to 8 p.m. when I basically collapsed in a heap on the floor and inhaled a burrito from Chipotle.

I know this may sound strange, but I kind of like unpacking and organizing. It gives me a chance to thoroughly sift through our stuff and determine what we need or should donate. Ryan laughed at me last night when it took me a solid 20 minutes to organize my “gift wrap” box where I store wrapping paper, gift bags, ribbon, etc. Our house may still be in shambles but now our tissue paper and gift wrap container is nice and tidy!

Our main goal for the weekend was to unpack everything, take things out of boxes and get the kitchen set up. I am happy to report that everything kitchen-related has a home in a drawer or cabinet!

KitchenOrganization.jpg

Ryan also did bit of closet deconstruction yesterday and took out some shelving units and added more hanging racks which allowed us to unpack and organize our clothes. The master bedroom is also almost done which is a great feeling. We just need to hang some pictures.

We’ve been unpacking and organizing ever since the movers arrived and there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. For those who have asked, yes I will definitely share some pictures as rooms start to come together a bit!

My mission for today is to get the internet set up (I’m currently blogging from a coffee shop), organize my home office (easier said than done) and work on an outside project.

Oh! And I cannot sign off this morning without giving an update on Sadie! She seems to be loving her new home but she proved, yet again, to be the least helpful little creature during moving day. She did serve as comic relief for the movers, Ryan and me, though!

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but Sadie is super weird about sitting on hardwood or tile floors. Ever since she was a puppy, she has refused to sit down on hard surfaces and will only sit on carpeted or soft surfaces (or, preferably, our laps). We don’t understand why, but it’s one of her many goofy quirks that amuses us.

The entire downstairs of our new house has hardwood flooring and an hour or so into the move, I looked over at Sadie as I unpacked a box in the kitchen and saw her pitifully looking at me in downward dog (butt in the air, paws on the ground). She would not put her butt on the ground and naturally I babied her and put a towel on the floor. She instantly sprawled out and relaxed on the towel like a little princess.

DoginSunSpot.jpg

Once we unpacked a box with blankets, she got upgraded to a quilt.

I love that crazy little lady.

When we moved I agree it felt so amazing to go through everything and organize it! Its relaxing and gives a feeling of productivity that not a lot of things can. I am so excited for you guys! When we first got our keys and started moving we were non stop and it was the most tired I think I have ever been. But once everything was unpacked, organized, hung up and decorated I felt so amazing and could finally enjoy my home. Cant wait to see some pictures soon! Have you thought of doing a house tour video?? That would be cool! I know you guys are safty concious which is amazing so you wouldnt have to show the front of your house. I know some bloggers who have done them and it was so interesting to see where the person whose blog you read daily lives. Okay that sounded a little creepy, no? But I mean it in the least creepy way! Just an idea 🙂

Our lab insists on squeezing under our bed to sleep every night. He BARELY fits but he’s been doing it since he was a puppy. Sometimes we’ll hear him get stuck in the morning trying to crawl out.

Yay for being moved in!! I’m with you about unpacking – I looove having a chance to set up my new organization system for everything and clean things out…even if it can get tedious. Good luck with settling in! 🙂

Sadie makes my day! She is so cute and funny! Poor girl was trapped on her own little towel island, do you have area rugs to eventually put down? Our dog goes through phases where he won’t go down the stairs from our bedrooms to the main floor of our home. He will sit at the top of the stairs and do little barks until we either carry him down or coax him down the stairs. To be fair, he has slipped down them a few times so I more often than not will just carry him down.

Congrats on the move! We have a 10lb weiner dog and her weird quirk (there are many!) is that she hates putting the leash on her when going for a walk (but she loves the actual walk), go figure. 🙂 She’s a hot mess but we love her!

My experience with movers is that they are always late. Always late. I had movers come six hours late once. And when I moved from Florida to California, they were two weeks late in delivering our stuff. Enjoy the unpacking!!

Moving is always so stressful, but it feels so good once you get things organized just the way you like. My pug is just a little monster, but favorite is the way he redirects you when you scratch his chest – he will use his paw to push his hand to exactly where he wants to be scratched. He’s a prince, but he’s too cute to say no to.

Amusing pet quirk = My cat, Molly, is OBSESSED with chickpeas. When I open a can of chickpeas, she goes crazy. She starts meowing and body slamming my legs. My husband and I often joke that she loves me more than him. He teases that Molly loves me so much, she wants to eat a vegan diet like me. Although I sneak her a few chickpeas here and there, we’re sticking with regular, meaty cat food for now! 😉

That is definitely a Vizsla trait that Sadie has! My guy refuses to lay on the hardwood floors too. He prefers chairs, couches, beds and likes to be under blankets! And he refuses to sit out on our back deck by himself. He will cry and bark until you go outside with him…and he wants to sit on your lap. I swear all Vizsla’s think they are human!!

I bet you are so happy to finally be moved in!!!

Amusing moving story: Last time I moved I drove a big U-Haul 2 hours to my new apartment (bad idea). I had to get gas before I dropped it back off, and somehow got part of the truck wedged inside one of those yellow poles by the gas pump. I had to get the gas station attendant to get in the truck and after a million reverse/forwards he somehow unwedged it. I was freaking out because of course it was the one time I decided not to buy the insurance.

We swear sometimes that our yellow lab, Colby, is part human – we even nick-named him “man-dog”. But one of the weirdest things that he does (besides burp – like a human, and LOUD), is when we give him a rawhide, he runs away with it and throws it in on the floor and then barks at it until he realizes it won’t bark back… then proceeds to attack it and finally lay down and eat it. Bizarre behaviors of our animals!

Rachel — that is too funny! I have a golden retriever named Colby that barks at EVERYTHING until he realizes it’s not alive hahaha. Last night we were playing fetch and his toy landed in a basket across the room…which he was then trying to tip over to get said toy…and each time he pushed the basket and it moved he barked at it! Love crazy dog quirks:)

Our vizsla is the EXACT same about hard surfaces. Even in puppy training, she would refuse to sit unless she had her bed to plop down on.

My dog has so many weird quirks! She’s terrified of water, obsessed with any and all drive thru windows, loves rolling in the carpet after she eats and will only eat her kibble if it’s mixed with green beans. I tell you, she’s a weirdo!

Congrats on the successful move, how exciting!! Can’t wait to see more pictures. It looks really wonderful from what we’ve seen! 🙂 Haha, Sadie cracks me up. My dog Murray can be similar in that he is SO stubborn. I took him for a walk today and he decided he wanted to turn around and go a different way, and no amount of cajoling could get him to continue on the route we were on. He sat down and braced his paws and would not BUDGE from the middle of the sidewalk, haha. He cracks me up! He knows I’m a sucker and will always give in and go the way he wants to go.

From what I can see in these pics, your new house already looks super cute! (Love that stone arch, and the bay window). Super excited for you – it’s contagious!

And I just took my second Body Pump class today, ever, because of you. (First class was on Friday – ouch, ouch, ouch, but I know it will get better.)

i’ve got a comment about this dog on hardwood floor business! I’ve got a lab who used to be normal in our old house when we had mostly carpet. As soon as we got tile, he became C-R-A-Z-Y. What he does is stand on a dogbed, rug, etc, with his two back feet and paws on the undesired surface. if he has to go outside and walk across all hardwood/tile, he has to psych himself up and RUNS like he’s terrified. Definitely not normal :-/ I guess Sadie is OK standing and walking on them, just as long as her booty is up? so strange!!

Sadie is the cutest! 🙂 We have these crazy patterned tiles in the kitchen and back hall of our house and whenever my partner’s mum dog came to visit, he would not go into those areas. The tiles just freaked him out!

Totally agree that moving is the worst but always such a great opportunity to do a little spring cleaning!

We have a weimananer and she is the same way. She will not lay on our hardwood floors. She needs a soft surface to lay on. lol I think it has something to do with the sporting breeds. 🙂

My dog Bella will not go up stairs unless you set her on the first couple of stairs and kind of nudge her from behind to get her started. So strange!

Awww Sadie is too cute! One of my dog’s silliest quirks is that whenever there is anything on the floor (like anything at all – a blanket, towel, flattened cardboard box, piece of paper, etc.) she immediately comes over and steps on it or sits down on it. It is super funny and totally non-helpful and ridiculously cute. 🙂

I used to have my own Sadie – an 80 lb yellow lab – and she was the same about hard surfaces! So funny. She would pull the smallest pillow possible off of a couch and turn three circles on it trying in vain to get her entire body and four legs on this little pillow, just to have something soft to cuddle with when her bed wasn’t around. Dogs are seriously soooo funny 🙂 Good luck on unpacking and organizing and congratulations!!!

Oh my gosh! My dogs are the same! If I’m giving them a treat in the kitchen and try to make them sit, they will NOT do it. I HAVE to bring it into the living room at which point they sit right away without being told, so they can have their treat. I wonder what the deal is? Haha

My dog is just like Sadie. He won’t put his butt on hard floors or ground! Not even grass. He can spend all day outside on his feet. It’s the weirdest thing.

Dobby is basically a living breathing quirk…
He walks through legs in a figure 8 pattern like a cat (he’s a tall standard poodle)
He assumes the chaise is his (& apparently has won it because my husband and I just let him have it and ask him if we can join him occasionally)
He REALLY thinks everybody and everything is on this earth to love him, he made it his mission to catch the turkeys in the woods across from our house and befriend them (fortunately they didn’t eat him alive) and he plays with my niece’s sugar gliders and if we stumble upon deer in the woods wants to run with them… Can NOT understand the chipmunks who won’t come out from under the shed to play… He’s so weird he’ll just lay there all day and wait
