Oyster Bisque

October 24, 2010 by Julie 25 Comments

Today I made my very first bisque… but we’ll get to that in a second!

First, let’s recap the day!

After Ryan and I got back on our walk around the lake near our apartment (we also detoured through a Farmers’ Market and got some yummy samples of pound cake), we showered up and hit the road to run some errands.

First up was a trip to Ulta, to pick up my special shampoo and conditioner and some face wash.

oyster bisque 002I have the thinnest hair in the whole world and am in love with Marc Anthony Instantly Thick shampoo and conditioner. oyster bisque 001It’s the only supposed “thickening” shampoo and conditioner combo that I feel like actually makes my hair a little thicker. I highly recommended it to those of you out there who are one knot in your hair away from baldness like me. 😉

Break for Pumpkin Spice

Our next errand took us to Park Avenue in Winter Park to pick up a present for one of my friends. On our way back to our car, a sign at Barnie’s advertising a Pumpkin Spice Freezer caught our eye.

Before I knew it, Ryan was ushering me inside and we placed an order for a large Freezer with extra whipped cream for muah.

oyster bisque 024 When Ryan was placing our order, the barista informed us that it was “Happy Hour” and all drinks were buy one, get one free. We asked if it was “buy one drink, get a cookie free,” but apparently that was not part of the deal.

We ordered a raspberry tea, but only drank about half because our taste buds preferred the pumpkin spice goodness.

oyster bisque 021After one more pit stop, we headed home for dinner!

Dinner

When I saw a recipe for oyster bisque in the latest issue of Cooking Light, I immediately flagged the page.

I was pretty excited to tackle the recipe tonight because I am a huge fan of oysters and I’ve never made homemade bisque before. oyster bisque 009 The recipe was surprisingly easy!

Ryan and I peeled and diced red potatoes and parsnips and chopped up leeks to add to seafood stock, which created our broth.

It became smooth and creamy after all of the veggies were soft and I blended the soup in the pot with an immersion blender. The recipe said to pour the soup into a real blender, but that seemed like a huge hassle and the immersion blender worked perfectly.

After adding half and half and two cans of oysters (the recipe called for fresh, but those are muy expensive), the bisque was ready.

oyster bisque 010oyster bisque 018 If you like oysters, I would bet money you would enjoy this soup. Ryan and I slurped it down!

Delish! My first bisque attempt was a success! 😀

I am now off to package up some gifts before relaxing for the rest of the evening. I can’t believe it’s already Sunday night. Sheesh.

Your bisque sounds great! I have been wanting oysters forever but they are a rare commodity around the Gulf region right now. I just hope they recover for next harvest is all. I make a killer oyster stew – check it out sometime!

I love visiting your blog – you were right, it really is like a chronicle of your day! If I did that I’d bore ya to tears LOL!! So glad to have met ya on the POM harvest tour!

Wedding day must be coming up soon! I hope you share some pics of your dress too after the wedding. Can’t wait to see your honeymoon posts!

I have the same exact hair! I actually tried that shampoo after you mentioned it a while back and I totally agree that it’s the best ‘thickening’ shampoo I have ever tried.

I was also wondering if you noticed a difference in the strength of your hair when you started eating a healthier, well-balanced diet?

Happy last week as an engaged couple!!

isn’t it great! it’s really the best one i’ve tried so far. glad you like it too!

also, to answer your question, i never really thought about changes in my hair since i started eating healthier, but now that you mention it, i have definitely noticed it growing faster! not sure if that’s a sign of hair health, but i’ll take it!

I know seriously! The weekend goes by way to fast!
You are so cute! I love how you describe your hair. lol.
Hmm…I don’t think I would like oyster bisque! I’m not a huge fishy person. I go about as far as tilapia and maybe some salmon. From there on out its all a no go for me for sure!

but i’ll take the pumpkin Spice freezer if you don’t mind;)

Yummy! I love oysters and bisques also. I think my boyfriend and I are going to have to try this sometime soon. 🙂 There’s just something about seafood in a soup that tastes so darn good! One of my faves is She Crab soup. Holy yummy!

I love Ulta! It’s such a great store. I have the opposite problem of you. I have such thick and curly hair. I hate it. It takes forever to straighten.

    The bisque looks great!
