Ridin’ Solo

March 2, 2011 by Julie 79 Comments

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, for the most part, I really prefer working out by myself. I tend to push myself harder and I like getting my workout done quickly. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am. 😉

Plus, when I workout with someone else, I’m usually concerned about how they’re feeling… are we running too slow, doing too much, etc. I forget to actually focus on my own workout.

I do have exceptions to this rule:

  • Group exercise classes (So much fun with a friend)
  • Steady-state cardio (Elliptical, long runs, etc.)
  • Long walks and hiking (I get bored without a buddy)

So, I guess I like a workout buddy when I’m not in the mood to kick my butt in the gym. 🙂

Fortunately I had the lovely company of my friend Merri on my morning walk with Sadie! After the gym (BodyPump + 20 minutes on the elliptical), we headed to my apartment to pick up the pup before taking her on a nice long walk around Lake Eola.

Merri made the time fly by. If I didn’t have that silly office job to get to this morning, I gladly would’ve kept walking for another hour or so.

Breakfast

After our walk, I came home ready for breakfast.

Breakfast

I first toasted a cinnamon spice Alternative Bagel before topping it with peanut butter, nectarine slices, nutmeg and chia seeds.

Check Out the Chia!

Fruity Layers

With the way that that nectarines were layered, it reminded me of a double cheeseburger… only not quite so greasy and a lot more colorful.

Chomp!

G-o-o-d!

Time to get to work! 😀

Question of the Morning

  • Do you prefer working out alone or with a buddy?

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

p.s. my mom’s in florida this week, and I totally asked her to hit a Publix to grab some alternative bagels. cha-ching!

I always get a better workout when I’m by myself or with my Dad – sounds funny but it’s true! He’s really into lifting and helped me get into it to 🙂

Totally agree with your stance on working out! I like company for stationary indoor stuff or if a friend is in a class with me. BUT if I’m doing an outdoor run, alone is the way to go. I’ve found one person always suffers by not getting a great workout or by having to push too hard and that’s not fun for anybody!

Alone! I hate when I feel like someone is waiting for me to finish my workout – it makes me feel under pressure to rush! Also when I’m walking or running it’s hard to tell a friend to hurry up if they’re slowing you down. I guess I’m set in my ways 😉

I 100% would rather work out alone. I am generally a talker, but when I am at the gym I just want to get in my workout and be done with it. I also HATE when I run into ppl I haven’t seen in a while, they tend to talk your ear off and by the time they are done you are so exhausted and don’t even feel like working out. Once in a while going for a run with a friend is fun though. 🙂

I typically like to work out by myself because I also think I push myself harder then. This probably sounds weird, but I also don’t like the feeling of people “watching” me work out, so it’s nice to get to the gym when it’s not too overly busy…Fitness Classes I love though because I have to keep up and there’s no room for stopping for a break if I just feel like it

it depends, Im a total group fitness girl but to go to the gym with a friend one- on-one. no offense to them. but I actually prefer to be by myself. I often push my self harder and Im really not to great at talking and running and or lifting it slows me down.. But it is nice every now and then to catch up.. although my friend that I saw last night came up to me while I was finishing up with some quick abs and she said “your all sweaty”!! uhhh…. yep, im at the gym…;)

A buddy! That way I have to work out, because I’ve made a commitment to someone. If I don’t…most likely I won’t show up at the gym!

Is there a health benefit to Chia seeds or are they just tasty? I’ve seen them a lot in food pictures lately but have never tried them!

Breakfast looks lovely!I I almost always work out by myself (except when I’m teaching classes obviously!) for the same reasons as you. However, once in a while if I do work out with a buddy, I’m pleasantly surprised! I guess it just makes a nice change. Having said that, I do like my alone workout time to think through my day. 🙂

I’m with you. I like working out on my own unless it’s a steady type workout like a long run or a group class. When I do work out with other people, I usually end up wanting to stay way longer than them too. So it works out if I’m not annoying anyone by making them wait for me. 🙂

I prefer working out alone. If someone else is even at the gym with me and not necessarily “with” me, I always tend to think of how the other person is feeling/what they are doing/when they’ll want to leave. These thoughts make for an unproductive workout for me. I do like to have company on walks though…really does make time fly!

I have mixed feelings just like you! I think it depends on the type of workout. When I am doing indoor cardio, I like to be by myself but when I’m doing strength or running/hiking outside, I like a buddy! With the exception of yoga, I can’t seem to get into the whole group exercise class thing.

I am definitely a working out alone person. I’m a loner by nature.
I have found though that I work harder if someone is around, like in a group class, so I’m trying to do more classes, push myself out of my comfort zone and really get a good workout.

I’m a runner, and I find that working out alone is the best way to go for me. I am SUPER super slow (read: 11minute miles slow!!) and like you, I am always wondering if I’m slowing down the person I’m running with… so I find it much more enjoyable to just be out there by myself and nature (or my ipod!) Also, I find that am a very intrinsicly motivated person… group ex classes like body pump are great, but they don’t movtivate me any more or push me any harder. It’s just the way I’m wired I guess! Perhaps that’s a good thing, though? My thinking is that I’ll always find the drive to workout, even as I grow older and age. Just my two cents!

I like working out a lone for the same reasons as you..1. I like to kick my own butt and 2. I get worried I’m running too fast or too slow for my workout buddy. I guess that pretty much only goes for my runs though. Otherwise, I like having someone there to chat with if I feel like it (and can pending how hard I’m working out). Give me a treadmill next to someone where I can do my own workout and they can do theirs…and I’m happy!

I really prefer working out solo, unless it’s with my mom. She’s the only person that I can get my exercise on with because we’re so alike and on the same page with our mentality. Plus, we always manage to make each other laugh!

I never work out with anyone else. Except my boyfriend, but his limit is 4 miles.

It makes me nervous if I know the other person is fast, and makes me bored or kind of upset if the other person is slowing me down (uh….my boyfriend). At the gym, I also get kind of annoyed when people want to chat me up.

The exception is definitely hiking. I’m sure hiking would be fun alone, but I’ve never done that. I love hiking with my boyfriend and/or friends.
