Sparking Sugar Cravings

August 12, 2011 by Julie 65 Comments

Two things that make me crave sugar like crazy:

  1. Eating sugar in the morning
  2. Drinking diet soda

Guess who did both of these things today?

This girl!

But I also worked out, so that’s good, right?

Workout

Today’s workout was very similar to my 30 second rest total-body weights workout. I kept things moving and went quickly from one exercise to the next to work up a nice sweat. This move-move-move workout also got me in and out of the gym quickly. Love that!

After breakfast and working for a few hours, I was happy to take a break for some late morning plans with Ryan.

Sparking Sugar Cravings

Just before lunchtime Ryan and I had plans to meet up at our bank to get some stuff done. Afterward, we drove to Mochi for a mid-day fro yo date. (I think someone was jealous of my solo date last night.)

Yesterday, when I blogged about how frustrated I was that most fro yo places don’t offer whipped cream, some of you told me to ask them for it because they typically do have it, but it’s not out for people to see.

Ask and you shall receive!

I’m so glad I have you guys in my life to tell me about these little secrets. You enrich my life every day. Smile

On my way back to our hotel room, I drove by Firehouse and remembered their fantastic 100 flavor Coke machine.

Today I tried peach Sprite Zero and it was basically fabulous!

cheese and jelly bagelwich 001

They should really make peach Sprite Zero a mainstream beverage.

After downing that bad boy, I think I’ve reached my diet soda quota for the next few weeks. I really try not to drink it often because the creepy ingredients freak me out, but I do love the sweet carbonation.

I also notice that my sweet tooth is out of control a few hours after I drink diet soda. I’ll probably be frantically searching for ice cream and cookies at my parents’ house tonight, but that’s fairly typical whenever I visit them. They always stock the fridge and pantry with the treats I try to avoid purchasing so my visits home are often filled with sugar rushes.

Lunch

Lunch today was a bit delayed because my big cup of frozen yogurt quelled my hunger for a couple hours.

I still wasn’t that hungry by the time 1 p.m. rolled around, so I made myself a light lunch.

cheese and jelly bagelwich 002

A cheese and jelly microwavable quesadilla and a banana did the trick.

cheese and jelly bagelwich 003

Now it’s time to pack up the hotel room. I have clothes, books, food and papers everywhere! Ryan and I are heading to my parents’ house in St. Pete for the weekend right when he gets off work.

I’m hoping for a weekend full of Sadie kisses, boating and family fun!

OK this is totally not the same thing as peach Sprite, but I just picked up some coconut-flavored LaCroix sparkling water the other day and it is faaaabulous. I’m usually not a fan of sparkling waters because sometimes they seem a little bitter to me, but this one tastes really good! Give it a try sometime when you’re craving the bubbles. I feel like I sound like a commercial right now…

And now back to your regularly scheduled programming?

yeah diet soda tricks our brains into thinking we’re GOING to get sugar, but when we don’t actually get the sugar, we go out in search of it. It’s a cruel trick!!

Haha, I’m the exact same way (whoah, almost typed whey. protein on the brain?) when I visit my folks. It’s almost like when I eat at home, it’s not really official, like it doesn’t count. Come on, if my father’s coworker makes pizelles randomly in July…. that can’t possibly be reality.

    Better eat up the evidence.

Also, the other day at the office I was craving sweetness for an afternoon snack but the cupboards were bare. The fridge, though, was not and I shot a little dollop of whipped cream straight onto my hand and licked it right up.

I imagine this is the type of joyous shame addicts feel when they get their rush (albeit not from sugar).

That’s good to know about the whipped cream, considering I LOVE it and have it on hand at all times! About the sugar though …I have recently been reading up on post workout sugar intake. I mean, obviously it’s sugar like honey, fruits w/ high gi levels like bananas (ie. quickly digestible carbs)….but it is absorbed right into your muscles for repair instead of being stored as fat. I guess I sort of knew this but after reading up on it I’m like “Okay, in that case ill put strawberries, bananas, honey, and sprinkles in my smoothie!!!” lol…

I try not to eat any sweets before lunch-no candy, no pastries, no cake or cookies. It can be hard at work, people like to give me a cookie at 9 in the morning. Plus I try to only drink water or coconut water til 6pm. Then I’m allowed to have one soda if I want but I usually don’t. I say try since I can’t be perfect.

Its actually been proven in research that diet soda increases people’s preference for sweets, perhaps because you’re not getting calories along with the sweet taste so your body expects it later. Interesting, huh! Happens to me too!

I’ve been trying to “quit” diet soda for years! I’ll go a few weeks without having any and then I’ll end up somewhere where I just can’t resist anymore. I was doing really well until I moved in with my parents and they always had to handy and I couldn’t resist the delicious Diet Dr Peppers around. But this post has inspired me to try to kick the habit once and for all! 🙂

quick work out question for you: I tried to do interval jogging but my knees can’t take it. I have good sneakers too, it’s my knees that suck. So besides the elliptical can you recommend a good walking treadmill work out?
I do 30 minutes of cardio, switching between elliptical and treadmill) and then 30 minutes of weights.

I had the sugar cravings BAD for a while, many sodas each day, then I’d get hypoglycemic and rush for the quickest thing on hand which would inevitably be cookies and chips. It was BAAAAAD. I finally got a hold of cravings by replacing meals with a yum-o smoothie full of nutrition. It didn’t take long and was what worked for me!

But I have to say….my weakness is Dr. Pepper. Not just anywhere though, it’s Dr. Pepper from Chick fil a. They know how to mix it just right! I need to try some froyo…you talk about it so much 😀 What is your fav place here in Orlando for my first visit?
