Speed Eaters

April 26, 2011 by Julie 39 Comments

I keep things nice ‘n’ easy around here! After a long day at the office, the last thing I want to do is spend a lot of time in the kitchen cooking dinner.

I have a bunch of go-to dinners in the back of my mind that I can always fall back on when I want a fast and simple dinner.

A favorite of both Ryan and mine is sausage with peppers and onions.

I simply cut up some Italian sausages (I typically use four large sausages), an onion and one green and one red pepper. I then stick the meat and veggies in a casserole dish sprayed with cooking spray and let it cook in a 350-degree oven for 30 – 40 minutes. Easy peasy!

Tonight I didn’t have a large green or red pepper on hand, so I omitted the peppers and Ryan and I simply enjoyed a meal of Italian sausage with onions and a toasted English muffin on the side for some carb-lovin’.

Though the English muffin was tasty, I wish we would’ve had hoagie rolls to load up with the peppers and onions.

As I’ve said before, this dinner is great because it’s very much of a “set it and forget it” meal. Once I pop the sausage and onions into the oven, I’m free to pack my lunch and straighten up around the kitchen (or, you know, watch the latest episode of Bethenny that I DVRed) until dinner is ready for eatin’.

I polished off my meal in no time flat. Ryan and I are both seriously speedy eaters… almost to a fault.

Whenever we go out to dinner our waiters almost always comment on our speed-eating. Sometimes we plan ahead and really try to make it a point to sloooow down and enjoy our meals a bit more.

We’ve also found that ordering dessert helps elongate our date nights. Winking smile

Speaking of dessert, I believe it’s time to dig into some of my Easter candy.

Swedish Fish are callin’ my name!

I hope this candy fuels some serious apartment cleaning. Our place is a mess!

It looks strange to see candy on your blog now!

When we dine out, my husband and I literally do not talk once our food arrives!

I am actually very thankful if it takes our food a long time to be brought out because that means we have more time to talk! 🙂

I can totally relate. I eat uber fast and the rest of my family eats reallllllyyyyy slow. I always get comments on my speed eating. I’m really trying to slow it down though. I want to savor my food more!

Ha we always get those comments from waiters too. Eating so fast is kind of an annoying habit because when I make a dinner that was very time-intensive and we scarf it down in 10 minutes I sort of want to cry..haha.

The hubby and I are speedy eaters too. I think about eating slower, but I never do. When it is dinner time we are silent while shoving food in our mouths. I have always wanted to be that person that goes out to eat for hours. Drinking wine, eating food slowly, actually hungry when its dessert time…..however it never happens.

Fun blog I just found it this weekend! I was wondering it seems like you go to the gym early in the morning before breakfast. Do you eat anything before you go~ I also go early and am trying to find something to eat that won’t blog me down.

Sweedish fish are good fuel for anything. They are especially good at motivating. And this reminds me I’m all out. Sad.

Haha; I used to eat SOOO slow, it was annoying. Now that I have kids, if I don’t eat fast, I don’t eat! Okay, not so dramatic, but same concept. 😉

Swedish fish always power me through anything 😉

I am a really slow eater, but my husband is mister speed demon with a plat of food….I keep him in check! ha. Sometimes I find myself speeding up if there is a lot of food I want to try (like a buffet or potluck), but I eventually slow down once I get the food on my plate-knowing it is mine. haha. I am a nerd. enjoy the cleaning night!

I NEED to try swedish fish! I am seeing them everywhere and still have never had one!

I’d never heard anyone say “set it and forget it” until 5 days ago at my boyfriends parents house. They had one of those grills from the 80s and everyone was shouting “set it and forget it” every few minutes. so naturally, your post made me laugh very hard

I definitely know what you mean about the speed eating – I need to slow down! They say that you consume a lot less if you take the time to enjoy your food.

I had to comment on this because swedish fish is my number one favorite candy!! Enjoy 🙂

Since you like Swedish Fish you should definitely try out that flavor water ice at Rita’s….it tastes exactly the same. I work at Rita’s and everyone likes it. Plus the new flavor this month is chocolate peanut butter which I’m pretty sure you would like. 🙂

We enjoy a similar favorite at my house – turkey smoked sausage with onions & potatoes, or just with onions, or like the other night, I had some mushrooms to use up so I added them in. I did mine in a pan, but the onions were pre-cooked (I do that on Sunday so I can easily add them to any meal), so my meal was ready in about 10-15 minutes!!

I need to develop a list of easy meals. But to me that means the meal takes less then 15 minutes. If I want to eat, I want to eat now! Plus I never know when my husband will be home and I want to eat with him.

I usualyl get the exact opposite comment because I’m the world’s slowest eater. I just like taking every possible pleasure from eating that I can. I savor and break down everything into smaller pieces. Yum!
