Summertime BBQ

August 19, 2013 by Julie 130 Comments

It’s the start of another week! I hope it’s a good one for you guys.

Our weekend was filled with summer fun. Barbeques, outdoor pool time, card games and quite a few fruity cocktails.

On Saturday morning, Ryan and I spent some time outside washing our cars while Sadie had a blast in her kiddie pool.

Vizsla in Kiddie Pool

Since the temperatures climbed into the upper 90s and the humidity was raging, Sadie was more than happy to relax in her pool (with her frisbee close by, of course).

Then it was time for the adults to enjoy some pool time! Ryan and I drove over to Eric and Amanda’s house for a barbeque by their pool.

Our afternoon started with drinks! Everyone else drank out of normal cups but Eric thought it would be amusing to make me drink out of a stein.

stein Prost!

The guys did a great job of taking over both food and drinks for the day.

Sadie helped!

IMG_0503

We had burgers, potato salad, chips, dip, ice cream cupcakes and fruit pops.

IMG_0509 IMG_0514

Eric made the cheeseburgers by mixing bacon and shredded cheddar cheese into the ground beef and topping the patties with sliced green olives before melting cheese on top. They were fantastic and I topped mine with all the veggies, ketchup and mustard.

IMG_0516

We all enjoyed Miami Vices (pina colada + strawberry daiquiri) with dinner.

IMG_0512

Oh yes!

Dessert was a combination of ice cream cupcakes and fruit bars.

Ryan and I found those bars while Ryan was on a mission to find the traditional flavored ice pops that remind everyone of childhood.

Remember these?

The two people we asked at Publix about them had absolutely no idea what we were talking about and told us to check a specialty foods store. What!? I’m pretty sure every summer camp in America has hundreds of these babies stored in their freezers and I doubt they’re shopping at specialty stores.

The fruit bars we ended up buying were pretty good and 5,000 times better for us, I’m sure, because they were made with real fruit and didn’t look neon.

After dessert, we spent the rest of the night sipping on our drinks outside by the pool and playing cards.

It was a great summer Saturday!

Question of the Morning

  • What was your favorite childhood ice cream treat?

I loved two ice cream truck classics: Choco Tacos and strawberry shortcake bars!

First off, these Sadie pictures are just killin’ me! I’m trying to convince my boyfriend to adopt an adult vizla to keep our lab company and your pictures are helping my case 🙂

Secondly, what a great topic for the morning! I loved the Mickey Mouse Ice Cream Bars from the ice cream truck. Come to think of it, I think they still have them. Must have a baby so that I can justify buying them!!

I loved those ice pops when I was a kid!! Total throwback.
This so reminds me of all those childhood classics I loved. Like ring pops, warheads, all those fun things. Not exactly ice cream truck food, but I was never a huge fan of those besides they had warhead ice cream, which I was all about. Or the mickey mouse pops I loved!
Sounds like such a fun Summertime bbq! Those are always the best.

FYI those popsicles (freezepops is what we call them) are usually avaialbe in most Walmarts, Kmarts, basically any cheap store. When I lifeguarded patrons used to buy us packs of 100s when the temps got really high!

That looks like a perfect summer Saturday! This weekend I went camping and a friend brought his visla – it was my first time ever spending time around one and I couldn’t help but think of Sadie. I was cracking up at his neediness all weekend, and when my friend tried to get him to swim (in a life jacket of course) out to fetch marshmallows, it was the most hilarious/pathetic/adorable display I’ve ever seen.

I subsisted on solely otter pops when I had mono! I think I just got them at Safeway. They aren’t usually in the freezer aisle, they’re just room temp in large boxes! I’ve found them in New York, Delaware, Washington, and California though (sometimes under “flav-or-ice”) so they’re definitely still around.
