Summertime BBQ

August 19, 2013 by Julie 130 Comments

It’s the start of another week! I hope it’s a good one for you guys.

Our weekend was filled with summer fun. Barbeques, outdoor pool time, card games and quite a few fruity cocktails.

On Saturday morning, Ryan and I spent some time outside washing our cars while Sadie had a blast in her kiddie pool.

Since the temperatures climbed into the upper 90s and the humidity was raging, Sadie was more than happy to relax in her pool (with her frisbee close by, of course).

Then it was time for the adults to enjoy some pool time! Ryan and I drove over to Eric and Amanda’s house for a barbeque by their pool.

Our afternoon started with drinks! Everyone else drank out of normal cups but Eric thought it would be amusing to make me drink out of a stein.

stein Prost!

The guys did a great job of taking over both food and drinks for the day.

Sadie helped!

We had burgers, potato salad, chips, dip, ice cream cupcakes and fruit pops.

Eric made the cheeseburgers by mixing bacon and shredded cheddar cheese into the ground beef and topping the patties with sliced green olives before melting cheese on top. They were fantastic and I topped mine with all the veggies, ketchup and mustard.

We all enjoyed Miami Vices (pina colada + strawberry daiquiri) with dinner.

Oh yes!

Dessert was a combination of ice cream cupcakes and fruit bars.

Ryan and I found those bars while Ryan was on a mission to find the traditional flavored ice pops that remind everyone of childhood.

Remember these?

The two people we asked at Publix about them had absolutely no idea what we were talking about and told us to check a specialty foods store. What!? I’m pretty sure every summer camp in America has hundreds of these babies stored in their freezers and I doubt they’re shopping at specialty stores.

The fruit bars we ended up buying were pretty good and 5,000 times better for us, I’m sure, because they were made with real fruit and didn’t look neon.

After dessert, we spent the rest of the night sipping on our drinks outside by the pool and playing cards.

It was a great summer Saturday!

Question of the Morning

  • What was your favorite childhood ice cream treat?

I loved two ice cream truck classics: Choco Tacos and strawberry shortcake bars!

Whoops.. Funny you drank out of a stein! Fruity cocktails are my favorite.. Especially poolside! Sadie looks like she had so much fun! My favorite summer treat was the orange sherbet push pops with the Flinstones on them 🙂

OMG mine too! I am so sad you cannot find those anymore. I even go into gas station ice cream bins to look. I adored those push pops!

Pina colada + strawberry daiquiri is my all time fav! It tastes like summer and heaven 🙂 I’m not sure what the deal is with Publix but fla-vor-ice is definitely still available in normal stores, my dad keeps a stock of them lol

We always had those flavored ice pops too, but here (in Washington state) they’re called Otter Pops! They’re the best!

I totally remember those ice pops! They were the best, and we would always love the melted juice at the end of the pop that we drank up blissfully. My favorite childhood ice cream was probably an orange creamsicle. LOVED the creamy vanilla and orange combination (and I kinda still do!)
Looks like you all had a fabulous time at the BBQ!

I had one of those strawberry shortcake bars from the ice cream truck this weekend – not even kidding! Also, you can get Fla-Vor-Ice or whatever at Walmart usually!

I LOVE freezey-pops (the ones you couldn’t find). I worked as a summer camp counselor for 7 summers, and our freezer in the staff lounge was always stocked with those. Quite the perfect summer treat!

I used to LOVE the strawberry shortcake bars too. But Mickey Mouse ice cream bars might have been the biggest favorite. Yum!

True fact: My guyfriends during freshman year of college didn’t trust the dorm water(don’t ask me why it was perfectly fine) and so they drank flavor ice as their water instead. Disgusting, but if we wanted a cold treat ever we knew where to go!

That’s funny because we can get those push pops everywhere up here! (I live in North Dakota.) Seriously Walmart, Kmart, & all grocery stores have them during the summer! Huge crates of them! I’m sorry you can’t find any! I can mail you a pack 😉

You guys in America have the best ice creams! Here in Australia, my favourite was this one called a Bubble-o-Bill, which was a rainbow ice cream with a gum ball nose you ate last! Memories!

In England we have these ice cream bars called Nobbly Bobbly and they were my favourite! They are strawberry and chocolate ice cream covered in sprinkles. So good on a hot summer’s day!

Strawberry Shortcake and Chaco Tacos were definitely on my top two as well! I also loved Dreamsicles. The ice cream at lunch time was such a terrible idea in my elementary school now that I think about it, haha.

Sadie is adorable – what kind of dog is she again, Vizsla?

From the ice cream truck, I always loved those ones that were shaped like Mario’s face, with a huge gumball nose. Come to think of it, the gumball had almost zero flavor and the delight was definitely more about the novelty and not about the actual flavor of the ice cream at all, ha ha. Nowadays, I’d go for a choco taco anytime!
