The Worst Halloween Candy

October 4, 2011 by Julie 172 Comments

Temperatures in Ocala reached the low 80s today. We’re relishing the gorgeous weather!

I cannot tell you how fantastic it feels to be able to step outside and not immediately start sweating.

Since Ryan and I wanted to eat dinner outside today, I didn’t want to make a meal that was too warm. While 80 degrees is cooler than usual, it’s not exactly chilly, so I figured an entrée that was nice and cold would be fun to eat by the pool.

I made simple seafood salad subs by combining imitation crab crab meat with light Miracle Whip (don’t hate!), mustard, sweet relish and chopped red onion.

Served with a side of roasted green beans.

And then Ryan and I shared a bag of peach rings for dessert. Mmm.

peach rings 003

I never used to think peach rings were that good until Ryan got me hooked on them. I think they taste best when they’re slightly stale, a little hard and extra chewy.

Speaking of stale food, my mom loves stale Peeps!

Did you know that they make about two billion different kinds of Peeps annually? The things you learn when doing a Google images search…

The Worst Halloween Candy

All this candy talk has me excited for Halloween! Now that we live in a real neighborhood, I’m hoping we’ll get trick-or-treaters this year. I’ll be sure to pass out erasers, pennies and pencils.

Just kidding. Puh-lease. We’ll definitely be handing out toothbrushes. I mean candy. C’mon! I’d give away ice cream if I could.

When I was a kid I was all about 100 Grand bars (a rarity), Almond Joys (no one else liked these, so I got them all) and KitKats.

The worst candy? Definitely Bit-O-Honey.

bitohoney

Runner up: Weird gobs of peanutty goo wrapped in orange and black wax paper.

peanut butter taffy

People who pass out that candy should be fined and then their taste buds should be thoroughly examined… along with their souls.

Does anyone actually like that stuff?

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I love stale peeps!! On Easter morning growing up, we’d open up the package of Peeps as soon as we got it, so that it could get started doing its thing 😉

Oh my gosh , I think that unidentifiable candy in orange and black wrappers totally wins number 1 for worst! I used hate getting those, and my mom always assumed they were filled with razor blades anyways haha. Also bad = smarties and non-candy treats, like pencils and erasers. What was up w that??

Your post just reaffirmed my candy problem. I actually like “Bit o’ Honeys” and “Mary Janes”. . . Oh my gosh. There is not a candy I don’t like. That is so embarrassing! BUT I must defend myself in saying I would NEVER hand it out!!

Regardless… I loved your reference to candy swapping. That was the most fun part. My brother and I would go home, dump our trick-or-treat bags and go to town!!!!!

You know what’s a great use for stale Peeps?? Peep s’mores!! Oh, can’t wait for those. 🙂

My worst Halloween candy was definitely a tie between Necco wafers (seriously? Like biting chalk) and Red Hots (inevitably given out by well-meaning little old ladies). Give me those fun-size M&Ms and mini Twix bars any day! I’m not going to lie; I’m pretty depressed I’m not going to get any trick or treaters living in an apartment this year. 🙁

I think people buy the weird goo wrapped candies to keep themselves from eating them. I know I always buy the candy I like the least so I’m not as tempted to dig into it myself. I get enough of the good stuff at school that I don’t need a bowl of it sitting around the house.

I love Bit-O-Honey and the weird peanut goo!!! But I do dislike quite a bit of other candy…. I hate Smarties, Nerds, Runts, Candy Corn, Dots, Peeps, Laffy Taffy, Necco Wafers, Milky Way, 3 Musketeers, and Skittles. But I hate to say the worst Halloween candy is a tie between Smarties and Candy Corn. Ick.

I’ve never had either, but there was a house in my old neighborhood that would put out a buffet line where we could pick one “treat” out of one of the five or six buckets that included raisins, apples, granola bars, stickers and some stuff that was similar. WORST house of the neighborhood quickly followed up by the one that would hand out stale candy and paper yo-yo’s.

    yep… paper!

        October 5, 2011 at 11:16 am

I know, sounds complicated and weird, but really it was just a circular piece of construction paper with the words “HAPPY HALLOWEEN yo-yo” typed on them and a piece of string/dental floss taped to it. Their instructions were to wrap the string around your finger and then point your finger down so it would fall, then whip that finger up in the air and swing it so the string wraps around again, point down, and repeat.

Thinking about it now, I guess they put in some effort but as a kid it was almost worse than getting to choose between apples or raisins for my halloween “treat”.

Halloween candy is sooo important! Right after I read this post my husband and I realized that since we are renting a house now this would be the first year that we could get some real trick or treaters. Thus began the very important conversation about what kind of candy we should give it. This is very important! You don’t want to be “that house” and the candy you choose says a lot about who you are. Important stuff 🙂
