All that talk about speed work and running this morning reminded me of one very important thing I’ve been meaning to do for about a week now.
Register for a Turkey Trot race on Thanksgiving!
I was so excited to find a 10k Turkey Trot near my mother-in-law’s house this afternoon and immediately signed up.
The first time I did a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning was three years ago when I ran with my dad and sister. We had a blast and I loved kicking off a day of gluttonous eating with a little exercise.
I haven’t run in a Turkey Trot since my first one back in 2008, though my dad and I did our own solo Turkey Trot in Gettysburg back in 2009. (<—Throwback post!) I’d love to make running in a Turkey Trot a Thanksgiving tradition and figured I might as well start this year!
I’m also hoping to hit up WalMart this weekend to see if I can find some awesome items to put together a festive costume to run in on Thanksgiving morning.
If you have any photos from a Turkey Trot where you dressed up, please email them to me. I’d love to highlight them on the blog to give fellow Turkey Trotters costume ideas!
Lunch
I had one requirement when fixing myself lunch this afternoon.
Include greens!
After Friendsgiving this weekend, I seemed to forget about green foods for the past few days.
I was more than happy to welcome green beans back into my life today and enjoyed them alongside a cranberry sauce and goat cheese sandwich.
Additional sides included POM pomegranate arils and tortilla chips.
Hoping to crank out a few more hours of work before it’s quittin’ time!
Sadie is not amused with me and my lack of playfulness today.
Can you see the fallen pig in the background of the above picture? She has tried to entice me into playing with it about 10 times in the past hour while I’ve been working on a freelance project.
Poor dog.
I promised her a good walk this evening which did absolutely nothing to satisfy her in the meantime.

I’ll be doing a 5k turkey trot in New Jersey this year! I’m never in the same place for turkey day, so my new goal is to do as many different turkey trots as possible. 😉
…I so wish I had dressed up so I could grace you with a fantastic picture.

I wish I had time to make a costume! I’m running a 5k Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving as well. It’s been a family tradition for the last 3 years now!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I’ve never done a Turkey Trot before – mainly because November is usually WAY too cold for running outside in my little part of Ontario (and most of Canada!!) But now that I think about it, that costume does look rather cozy…. 😉
Tracy @ Tracy's Treats says
I’m planning on participating in a Turkey Trot this Thanksgiving, too!
peanutbutterfingers says
woo! gobble, gobble! 😀
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
Oh I love that you’re going to dress up for the run! How fun! And congrats on being featured in your alma maters student newspaper! That’s exciting!
Khushboo says
That sounds like a great tradition. A few Christmases ago, I went for one of the best runs and it was such a great way to start my food-filled day. Christmas dinner never tasted so yum!
Kathleen @ Ocean Full of Lemons says
Love Turkey Trots! I’ve run in them before and love looking for goofy costumes. I posted a funny photo I found when I blogged about Turkey Trots (http://oceanfulloflemons.wordpress.com/2011/11/09/signed-up/). I remember seeing a ton of those hats everywhere – def funny!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I’ve never done a Turkey Trot but they seem/sound fun! I am sure it would be to have a fun race under the belt.
I usually teach a class, go to a class, or do my own workout with a sister. Gotta do SOMEthing that day 🙂
Have fun getting a costume together….that could be fun!
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
haaha that would be so fun to watch, a bunch of people dressed up like that! I’ve never been to anything like that before.
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
I’m doing a Turkey Trot 5K with my dad, uncle, and two of my cousins on Thanksgiving! I’m excited because I’m discovering the other runners in my family! Plus, I plan on running the whole thing with my dad at his pace, I haven’t seen him since August so it will be fun to spend the time together!
Laura says
I am running my FIRST turkey trot next week (and also my first time ever running a 10k – EEK!!)
I am excited for this new challenge and also to start off the holiday in a healthful way as you mentioned 🙂
Leah says
I just signed up this morning for my first Turkey Trot 10K at The University of Richmond! Apparently is ridiculously hilly so here’s hoping I survive!
Can’t wait to celebrate with an afternoon of gluttony 🙂
@4loveofcarrots says
You sure do have the racing bug, that’s awesome!! It’s a traditions for my dad and I to do a turkey trot wherever we are it is always a blast and a nice way to get your metabolism going for the yummy food ahead. I usually see pilgrims and turkeys at the races and without fail someone dresses like Santa!
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
SOMEONE has the racing bug. 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
apparently all that crap i talked at dinner after the savannah half was just that… crap. i can’t get enough of races!
Annie @ Naturally Sweet Recipes says
I’ve always wanted to do a turkey trot, never have. My friend has done it every year for years! Looks amazing! Your dog is so adorable. 🙂
Leila says
The Turkey Trot 5k in my town is a littler later then I’d like (9am, I would have preferred like 6 or 7am) so I won’t be participating in the race but I do plan on still getting up early and running! .. And I probably won’t be dressing up. I think I’d get a few weird stares if people saw a random girl dressed as a turkey running around the neighborhood.. haha
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile says
I signed up for a turkey trot as well! It’s only a 5k though because there were no 10ks that were going on. It’s my first race ever though, so I’m excited 🙂 They also give a family in need a meal for everyone that signs up!
Hilliary @ Happily Ever Healthy says
Your lunch looks delicious! I have been meaning to look up an after thanksgiving race!
Hope says
That is awesome that you are doing another race! The Turkey Trot sounds like so much fun! 🙂
I haven’t had a lot of greens in my life lately either. I spread myself way too thin this week. I have had something to do every single night after work which includes me going out to dinner. I cannot wait until this week is over so I can make myself homecooked meals again. That cranberry sauce looks yummy!
Robin says
Please post easy costume photos! I signed my sister and I up for a 10k trail run, and I’d really like to get in the spirit! I was thinking about wearing a baseball cap and tying something off the front like a cut-out of pumpkin pie or turkey to look like I was running towards it, but I fear that would get real old real quick.
peanutbutterfingers says
i hope people send some in! i need ideas, too!! and your idea is so cute!!!
Janine @ThePurpleGiraffe says
I’m doing the Turkey Trot in my hometown this year, and I got a turkey BIC Band for the occasion, though your post is making me want to take a run to iParty for a full body turkey costume… anything to embarrass my hubby!
Mary B says
Awesome article in your alumni newspaper! I especially loved Ryan’s quotes about you. 😉
I am not doing an official turkey trot, but I do plan on running at least 3-4 miles Thanksgiving morning. I’m also very inspired by you and some of your blogger friends to attempt a half-marathon. The first annual Run Raleigh happens April 12 here in NC, I want to be a part of it!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
My husband and I did a Turkey Trot last year for the first time in our town, and I loved it! This post reminded me that I need to try to find one that we can still sign up for around the Phoenix area since we’ll be there for Thanksgiving this year. Thanks for the reminder! 😉
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
How cool! I’ve never even heard of these before 🙂
Nicole says
I am laughing at Sadie and the pig. My dogs will plop their toys on my laptop when they want attention. Subtle is not in the vocabulary of a coonhound. But I did just manage to ignore his barking tantrum and get him to lay down on the couch without yelling. The power of animal crackers.

Leslie @ Body Won't Break says
Turkey Trot. That’s something for me to strive for doing next year. Definitely putting that on my list!
Our dogs don’t bring us toys. They would much rather chew on our hands and play tug with our hands or chase the hand. Basically – we are their toys.
Sarah says
Ahhh!! Gettysburg! I didn’t know you had family there! I am from Pennsylvania, not far from there. I’m doing a 10k Turkey Trot, too. My first Turkey Trot. Glad I can burn off major calories that morning so I can indulge in a turkey feast later! Good luck!! 🙂
Dawn says
I saw someone running on my way to work with a vizsla! I thought of you. HA!
Hillary says
I’m trying to coerce my boyfriend into running a 5k with me on Thanksgiving—our own little private Turkey Trot! Now I feel like I have to dress up (and make him do so as well). I’m even more excited than I was before!
Bee Goes Bananas says
I’ve never done a Turkey Trot before! It gets pretty cold here in Canada around this time of year, and I really don’t like running in the cold. It makes my chest really tight. I’ve never done an official race, so my goal next summer is to get at least one under my belt!
Annie says
i don’t have a picture of it…but last year a friend and her brother made a giant fork and a giant spoon out of aluminum foil and what i think was cardboard, and had it sticking out of the top of their shirts, reaching high about their heads. it was hilarious to watch them run with giant silverwear poking out above them!
another group had one guy dressed as a turkey, and a bunch of shirtless face-painted Indians chasing him with fake hatchets. amazing.
Michelle @ Blogitness says
I would love to see running silverware!
Laine says
I loved the article in your school’s student paper! You really inspire me to work harder at my blog and seriously try to turn it in to a career. Ryan’s quotes were so supportive too! 🙂 You’re one lucky lady!! 🙂

Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
You definitely need a turkey outfit!
Nicole says
I hear ya, my dog is just like Sadie with her crazy amounts of energy and love for play! I work from home too, and the best is when she comes up to me and squeaks her toys in an effort to get my attention while I’m on conference calls!
Taylor @ Crumbs Don't Count says
Dress in orange and put a mathmatical “pi” sign on the front of the t-shirt…you can be pumpkin pie!
Heather says
aw love the alumni article, its so cute how ryan talks so sweetly about you!
Angela @ My Pinky Toes says
I’m thinking of doing a Turkey Trot where I live, but I haven’t registered yet. The best thing about it is that they give you to option of a finisher’s t-shirt or an ENTIRE pumpkin pie!!! Pie please!
Rosa - Fitness, Food, Fulfilled says
I so wanted to do a Turkey Trot this weekend, but since we’ll be traveling that morning, it won’t work out. 🙁 Next year.
Sadie is so getting you ready for kids. She cracks me up!

It for sure seems at though you have the race bug!
And Sadie is so cute. Our dogs do that all the time. Especially when we get home from work! They want us to throw the duck 1,000 times!

I’m doing a Turkey Trot this year, and it’s my first race ever! I’m so nervous!
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
I’m running a turkey trot on Saturday! I’m so excited. I just started racing (by which I mean running in races…not actually, you know, competing haha) in August so this is obviously my first turkey trot, but I’m super stoked 🙂
Charlotte says
I’ll be running the 10K as well! Can you do a post on what’s good to eat before and after the race? It’s also on Thanksgiving, so another post on what to eat then would be great as well! I mean, I got in exercise, but then all the food later on will be too much! Thanks!
Jessica says
I wish I could do a Turkey Trot! I just found out last week I have a stress fracture in my foot, so there’s no running for me anytime in the near future. 🙁
